Robin shouldn't have waited for him to finish his speech. If I had her ability, I would just snap his neck whilst he was talking. Robin isn't seen in many battles since her ability lets her beat the enemy quickly or she simply loses. The main exception was her battle against Yama in Skypiea.

Robin could have kicked his ass? Moria can switch himself out for his shadow and teleport through darkness. If Moria was a pure combat-oriented character he could own just about anyone, logia's included (after all they are still vulnerable to shadow cutting.)

Moria may have his limits, sure. And he's not a combat oriented character. But it's perfectly plausible that he could (and did) defeat Robin. Robin may have a very powerful DF ability, but Moria's is even better still.

often the level of fear depends on how far or close your enemy is. if he is at a safe distance, no problemo but if hes standing right behind you fear just acts up on its own and no one thinks straight when theyre scared

Well, if you look at the episodes of after the defeat of Moria, in order for the people to get their shadows back, Moria must say"Shadows return to your masters" so if Robin clutched Moria, they would not get their shadows back.
