Jefferson had his own ideas but the fact stands that the US Constitution is in total harmony with the position of a very robust and well defined separation of church and state. The "Old Testament" is rife with contradictions with "The New Testament", which references the teachings of Jesus Christ. Fundamentalists use both religious documents to justify their actions where it fits. I am not a religious scholar but I do understand the basic difference between the teachings of Christ and the fire and brimstone professed in the "Old Testamant". One book justifies killing in the name of God, the other doesn't.. Fundamentalists do not distinguish the contradictions. Can you?

Jesus was meant to replace the old testament, I'm well aware of that. However, I don't know of many people who want to abolish the death penalty based on the teachings of Jesus. My point was it's hypocritical for a "christian" to perform an abortion. I know some abortions are to save the life of the mother, but most are just for convenience.
