I am a white British person myself - it is a great pity that so many people are ignorant of our colonial past (this, at least in part, explains the lack of understanding of more recent wars). The attitudes that most people are brought up with, and which the media reinforce, are very deeply ingrained. To be honest, I don't think this is likely to change, and in fact the situation may get worse as the economic crisis deepens - many people laughably blame immigration for that.

Great points except for the fact that EVERY country, tribe, clan in history has done all those things to its neighbors and enemies, the British were just way more successful than most. @jnmklo9 That 'aid' isn't pure altruism - it's for investment. In the same way the World Bank loans to these countries and gets them paying off debt that they can't afford, leading to their natural resources being handed over to their new foreign owners.
Tata is a good example of inward investment - but that's just India (one of the fastest growing economies). How many Banana Republics have multinational corporations?
I know most British are tolerant and generous, but not those in charge.
