further evidence John Williams is a petty thief and a plagiarist. I don't understand how people are letting him get away with the wholesale theft of beautiful pieces like this when the originals are going ignored by the masses.
This is the great Kenneth MacMillan's definitive choreography... No other version has come even close to the emotional and visual expressiveness of his work...
Actually, No. It is as if the family is like a kind of 'mafia', they don't have to do much at all to prove they are tough, just turn up. You would know to keep your distance, or expect trouble. The music is just so powerful as to give that impression. Impressive. Love it.
@campbellmackie this is probably the Marius Petipa choreography, these are knights, soldiers, that's why they are so controled, its like a march. But you can give a check on the Nureyev choreography, the best one in my opinion.
@campbellmackie The Dance could have been more kinetic without detracting from the dignity of the movement. I don't find it boring, but too restrained. A few lifts might have added to the masculine sensuality. The music far surpasses the choreography in this piece, though it's overall good.
@campbellmackie This piece is about a dance in the 15th century, that's the choreographer's inspiration, that's why it's so controlled. IMO it works great with the dramatic tension.
@campbellmackie maybe if we understood the context of the dance, it would mean more to us. I get what you mean though... I thought it would be WAY more dramatic than this xD
Choreography is perfectly fitting for the Capuletsl Paris demonstrates the arrogance and superiority of his position, whilst demanding from Juliet her presence and her hand in marriage. Whoever choreographed this captured the gentleness of Juliet as opposed to the supercilious Paris.
strings v wind instruments is the beginning of the devide. the middle section (not here) is the resolution using piano whilst the final act is the beginning of the insult and war and reversal of the theme ending in the beethoven hand of fate da da da da. The bit with the sax and clarinet are a nice tip towards American jazz; popular at the time
@mrpitchf0rk Yes, definitely. And when the piece is played too fast, it loses that foreboding flavor and becomes nothing more than a romp. But if played too slow, then it becomes a heavy weight dragging around our ankles, miserable for us to listen to.
Who is the danseur portraying Romeo in this production? I like his interpretation of the character as a careless young buck gatecrashing the Capulets' party, as opposed to the sullen, brooding type we normally get to see.
You can order it from Amazon. It's listed under the title "Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet / Corella · Ferri - Kenneth MacMillan (Teatro alla Scala 2000)".

And slightly intimidating.

Where fantasies are born...
She felt soft inside trusting her destiny...
Only, the two of them can feel, read each other's thoughts...
Sensations, understanding, were completing each other...
She found a link to her desire and sense...
A voice to her own secrets...
She found her…soul mate...

Do the dancers themselves get to interpret the characters? Wouldn't Prokofiev and the ballet director already have added their own interpretations?
