Thank God for You-Tube and others who care about this stuff. Imagine using the You-Tube time transport software to poke back to 1968. Hippy dress required. As Jimi emerges from his flat you hit him with an earnest handshake and smile and tell him you are the center of the universe man! Go with God. Then as you walk away you give a backhand peace sign while Jimi smiles in disbelief and thinks who was that crazy cat? ha ha ha ha...
I saw inside this flat a few years ago. Its the Handel House offices, and they do tours sometimes. It cost £15 just to see a couple of bare rooms, when the lavishly renovated Handel Museum is only £5.
It smacked of a lack of respect and snobbery towards him as an artist, yet they were greedy enough to take advantage of his popularity. Yet do get a chill down your spine that Hendrix lived there-but thats about it. It was dissapointing.
This is the flat where Jimi wrote the ballad 'The Wind Cries Mary' - it's a pity there's no mention of 'the traffic lights that turn blue tomorrow' (still red) which can be seen fleetingly further up the street to your left.
hi, just to tell you that i worked at 23 Brook St when JH lived there, it was a Bistro called "Mr Love", Jimi lived on the top floor and came in to eat and buy cigarettes often, also there were quite a few wild parties up there at night with a whos who of visitors. we were open till 3am so were handy for food and wine.
i have photos of original place if anyone is interested.
@sutney Sutney,i would Love it if you could share those pictures.I am on FB Maxwell Mann in Pensacola Florida.I think it is so very cool you got to meet him.
It too bad that Seattle his home town, has not given him the recognition that he so well deserves. Seatttles own son and Seattle did Not save his childhood home from the wrecking ball, it was torn down a few months ago.
A television programme was made about the campaign to get the Hendrix flat a blue plaque. I think it was for Channel 4 television. I videoed it at the time, and it was interesting to see all the stuffed shirt Establishment types waffling...none of them had a clue who Hendrix was. Worth watching if you can get a copy. x
Yes, he was, and it was Cathy Etchingham and Pete Townshend who really pushed for it. Amazingly, the authoritarian panel conceded that he was a significant enough 60's figure to merit one. I was as surprised as anyone, but pleased that they had the intelligence to realise how important his contribution to the rock scene was! The programme was shown as part of 'Hendrix Night', and there were several others, including a rather depressing piece about Jimi's death. Peace.
Yes he was, but it was thanks to Kathy Etchingham and Pete Townshend that it came about; the stuffed shirts eventually conceded that Jimi deserved the recognition, as he was such a significant and influential 60's figure. Of course, none of them had a clue about his music, and their discussions were patronising, to say the least. An interesting film though, especially the details of how the plaques are made! Peace and love x
I lived in London for 46 yrs and was in my late teens when Jimi was alive. Saw him quite a few times onstage.(Billy Walkers 'Uppercut Club','Bag'O Nails', Royal Albert Hall) Me & my friends even spoke to him briefly in a music shop in Shaftesbury Ave.(he was really polite and shy) Back then we took it all for granted. I went past the Samarkand Hotel(Notting Hill) the morning after he died.
Thanks for the comments! Sadly most of the old London music venues have gone. I used to go to the Marquee when it was in Wardour Street, but I think even that's closed down now. Kudos for having actually met Hendrix, BTW!
delbhoye: Quite a few of us back then met him, only briefly or else we caught glimpses of him in music shops around Shaftesbury Ave. Yes, my fave venues were Chalk Farm Roundhouse, Marquee,100 Club and a place called "Newlands Tavern' near where i lived.
I watched a program on Tv about this, and they applied for the blue sign and how they make them. Jimi was told that he was a neighbour of handel so to speak and he was asked if he knew of him..and jimi said "UUGH yeah I heard of the guy"! everyone was amused by his remark.
Thanks for posting the video. My girlfriend and myself visited the flat there a few years ago. After leaving that site we visited the 22 Landsdown Crescent flat. That was a unique and strange feeling standing there outside the flat where he died.
I've found, its crazy to see how its so posh, If it was the same at the end 60's hendrix would suit the place with his nice clothes...like a model boy lol.
delbhoye; In the 60s it was usual to see so many stars shopping in the Central London area..Michael Caine,Clapton,Beck,Lord Sutch,Graham Bond,Chris Farlowe, Scott Walker (who also lived in this area and still lives in Pimlico) Swingin' London was the place to be in 1967-1970. Jimi shopped at 'Lord Kitcheners Emporium' ..that's where he bought his Edwardian style gear. Thank you for this clip. Makes me homesick.
Wow, very cool! Great video and it is exciting to see where some of the greats lived. You have a very nice voice and did a great job narrating. I enjoyed this very much! :O)
Wow! Were your parents hippies? :o) It's worth passing by there if you're ever in London. It's the kind of thing that never gets mentioned in the tourist guides.
i dont think handle would mind living next to hendrix - thry could have both drop some acid and jammed together!

Cool story, sorry this a year late, only just found the vid.
Have you contacted any Hendrix sites to see whether they're interested?
Even Experience Hendrix maybe, tho I can't stand the way they keep having Jimi's vids removed to 'protect their interests'
With the 40th anniversary of his death looming there's a lot of interest in anything
