I for one do not find SM funny at all. Maybe its my generation but watching a cokehead prance around on stage relying solely off gags just doesn't do it for me. And people always cite "The Jerk" when this issue comes up. It's like Steve Carrel, oh your great at being and idiot, that's not comedy. Sorry, any funny he has was all up his nose.
@Chardie420 Sorry, but Steve Martin wasn't part of the 70s coke culture. In fact, he's been described as "relentlessly square" during that time period. He did indulge in Marijuana, but gave that up early on in his career. I can accept that you don't like it, everyone has their opinions, but don't call him a cokehead. This is a guy who honed his comedy chops at Disneyland, not underground clubs.
@Chardie420 You're right, Chardie. Steve Martin was pretty unfunny, and I realized it then. It always frustrated me that all the teen-age potheads just went along with the trend, much like they did with Howard stern in the 1980's. I'm glad some people, albeit a minority, realize that some of the emperors have no clothes.
Steve Martin is by far the best comedian alive. He's intelligent, well-versed, multi-talented, and you know what – an amazingly nice guy. He's one of the greatest performers in our modern age, and I absolutely love him.
@Tomahawknutter Most people wrap the open end of the balloon around one finger, and try to force the tip through the loop. If you wrap it around two fingers, there's a natural opening. With an hour of practicing twisting animals, you can tie balloons in under a half second pretty easily. Hell, I used to teach summer camps where six year old kids learned to tie a balloon in 2-3 seconds.
Leslie Nielson's gone? Man, what is going on this month?? Seriously, 3 friends of mine have each died in the last couple weeks (One of them I found out about this morning), and now Leslie Nielson too. Nothing makes sense anymore.
I know it's supposed to be absurdist humour, but I didn't find this very funny... Ah well. He's still an excellent comedic actor, especially in Pink Panther, IMHO.
Thanks to what he did in the late-70's, Steve Martin is on my list of the ten greatest comedians of all time. My list is as follows: 1. Lenny Bruce 2. Bob Newhart 3. Bill Cosby 4. Richard Pryor 5. George Carlin 6. Steve Martin 7. Rodney Dangerfield 8. Don Rickles 9. Red Foxx 10. Mort Stahl Honorary Mention: Shelley Berman
My opinion? Unfortunately, acts like Steve's here would rarely ever sell out these days, since all the good venues would be handed to comedians who only make jokes about sex and killing children. It's abhorrently sad, isn't people?
@JDMURDERERS RIP Leslie Nielson, funny I was just checking the email on this alternate mailbox and here he has croaked since these messages took place two months ago. That man did dead pan comedy like the best of them could if not the best of them all! Looked so serious and was so silly underneath it all.
Oh this takes me back. Steve Martin was hot after I graduated h.s. it's as funny now as it was then. This Steve we haven't seen for ages. Now he does a lot of more hi-brow stuff with poetry and stage plays and such.
@rawker617 yep. funny i got it at 'book off', a discount book store... read it in two days. i'm not a big reader, so thats fast for me. couldnt put it down! such a cool guy. i'd love to find one of his albums on vinyl...
I was at this show...summer of 1978. The Blues Brothers opened. It was unreal. Belushi was like an acrobat with his dancing. Steve Martin was so funny I was literally crying.
The Blue Brothers were the opening act for Steve on this tour. In fact it was during this time at the Universal Amphitheater while they were opening for Steve that they recorded their "Briefcase Full of Blues" record.
I went to see him with a blind date. When he did Happy Feet...well, that's the last time I ever saw the guy. No loss. But then Steve continued his show out into the parking lot after the official show was over. The best.
It is too bad that this stuff isn't out on dvd, but he did an episode of the first season of the Muppet Show which is...He does a cleaned up balloon animals with a new ending about hunting the balloons. Funny stuff. He also does quite a bit o' banjo pickin'.
Steve is absolutely brilliant! He most definitely makes it into my top 3 stand up comedians of all time together with Andrew Dice Clay and Rodney Dangerfield.
Does anyone know if a clip of him pretending to be electrocuted (and, ultimately, enjoying it) when grabbing the microphone is available @ You Tube? Or maybe the video he made for "What I Believe"?
In our garage we have a bunch of old albums that belong to my parents. A lot of them came from my dad's friend who passed away and the albums were left to my dad in his will. But anyway, one night when we were outback listening to albums, I was inside the garage looking through the records and found Steve Martin's "Let's Get Small". I put it on and it was hilarious. He's one of the best comedians ever, both in the movie business and the stand up comedy business.
I just read Martin's book BORN STANDING UP, the story of his career as a stand up comic, and I highly recommend it. The amount of serious thought, discipline and hard work required to appear as silly as he does here is surprising and extremely interesting, and Martin details it all very clearly and entertainingly.
WELL EXCUSEEEE ME!!! He has gotta be just about the greatest stand up comedian of all time. I would have said he was the greatest, but to be fair, theres also Seinfeld and a lot of other good people out there now, and its hard to pick!
I saw him do this show live at SUNY Albany in 1975. He did the same routine on an HBO Special in 1976.
By this time (1980) the routine had become predictable and, well--routine. But his manic style and goofiness was really a blast of fresh air at first. You had to be there.
@LoyalTideFan, agreed these people are suffering and they want to take it out on absurdists like Steve Barton,Steven bright, and the 19th century prime minister of England Benjamin Bisraeli. What's wrong with these people anyway? I'm sorry, but high unemployment and brilliant comedy are like comparing apples and more apples separately eaten by midgets on stilts and dwarfs trapped in revolving doors. And aren't we tired of hearing about those people, but I digress, Steve Barton = Pure genius's.
@LoyalTideFan, Oh, by the way, my friend is missing a small minnow who answers to the name of skip. If you see him around, remember to put him in water immediately because I think he's not on his medication and forgets himself when he goes to the titty bars. Also, I'm starting a small fund to help find skip if you'd care to make a contribution of $10,000 to $50.00 or give what you can between $30 and $5.Anything that increases your chances of getting into heaven after you die is advisable.
I just finished Steve's autobiography, "Born Standing Up". I cannot recommend this highly enough. For Steve Martin fans, it's a MUST. Even the not-so-big fans will enjoy it.
yeah, it's too bad, he was incredible...but if you want to know why he stopped doing standup read his book, "Born Standing Up". I had a new respect for the guy after I read it.
Not like anyone else except my brother woud care, but I was there that night.. It was also the night that the Blues Brothers opened for him and when they recorded "Briefcase Full of Blues"... what a night.
The best part of this act is how he acts so smoothly that you wonder whether he actually meant to pop the balloons or not.
