Bowie said: "It was written because of going to see the film 2001, which I found amazing. I was out of my gourd anyway, I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me. It got the song flowing."
I agree, sweet Angie, powerful performance for a majestic song.
Among the music and lyrics the most poignant by Bowie. Also I'm moved every time and I can not help but say "but, how beautiful!".
Could it seem like a scanning of those few seconds preceding whatever process of conscious death, in slow motion... and the extraordinary thing is that David sings it with a mysterious sense of serenity mixed with an infinite sweetness.
Oh, yes!!! it was the first song of him I've heard ! It was in Soviet Union time, the very start of Perestroyka, when Russians didn't know about David Bowie at all! the country was out of the world..LOL. Beeing a teens I was with my parents in Germany (they worked there), I've seen a video for this song on German TV and said "I want this!', my parents were very suprised but however they bought me the vinyl album (it was a time of vilyl !!!). I was so happy! It was like to open a new world !!! :)
Very lovely your small historical cross-section of society, dear Cathy, thanks a lot. They were pioneering times toward the Space, even a technological race between Russia and America, a position of prestige and not only. The vinyl... hah the vinyl was magnificent, nowadays appreciated again. I imagine your joy as teenager, a panorama that was opening also for a certain kind of spiritual awakening, what perhaps Major Tom testifies allegorically.
Bowie wrote this song in the middle of the space race. Major Tom is an astronaut that, in space, faces the beauty of our universe from another perspective, and with this new point of view, doesn't want to come back to earth, planet earth's not the same for him, it's blue, it's a cage, and now, he's beyond the cage. Obviusly, Major Tom dies, but he's running forever round his tin can.
Thanks for this wonderful video. YOU are the best!!! :)
Perhaps the key is "Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do": blue, sadness. The whole trilogy (with Ashes to Ashes, Hallo Spaceboy) has a fil rouge of connection: the voyager of Universes does not belong to the Earth, is alien to this type of society. The conceptual parallel with "2001, Space Odyssey" is decidedly ingenious for its saying - not saying, giving rise (as did Kubrick) to many interpretations. Heartfelt thanks for your input, dear Friend, always excellent.
