Its not autotune people its just a reverb effect. Im certain some sort of vocal effect is on the studio version too... it just gives it a spacier sound to make it sound so fucking beautiful with the music... watch the summer skin video from this set it suits that song much better
This is one of my favourite videos ever I think. It is always the quietest, most unassuming ones that kick the most ass, I'm looking at you Chris Walla.
at 3:15, Chris plays the same melody on the piano as the Tegan and Sara song, Back in your head. (Yes i know he recorded them) Just thought it was funny.
it isn't autotune there's reverb on the vocals and like in most other live videos his voice does those little jumps and the reverb makes it sound autotuned, i know it sounds farfetched but it happens when i sing live :')
i dont think ben knows how to smooth out his voice while playing guitar or keyboard,
thats hard to do and he dosent seem to take enough breaths if you listen to the recorded music i swear you can hear him taking large breaths at the end of every line
@STEVeUNIX dude do u hear his voice latching to notes and then suddenly shifting to 3 different notes in a second? anyone who works with pitch correction or auto-tune should notice a less than subtle pitch correction when it's applied. not all auto tune sounds like 't-pain' it's a simple studio standard that death cab obviously brought to the stage. owl city does the same thing.
@ETHANIOSAURUS I know what his voice sounds like. None of the other Death Cab performances sound like this one. His shaky voice sounds very nice and nuanced in the other ones, but because the producers slapped autotune on this one it sounds very wobbly and digital.
I'm not accusing Death Cab for using autotune, I know they are against it and it was probably added by some ignorant producer for the show who uses it for everyone.
It's definitely not autotune. Considering they are apart of a society against Autotune if I'm not mistaken. His voice is shaky because he's moving about a lot, and as time as gone on, his voice is increasingly shaky, as you can see in other videos. He's still a genius of course.
To all of you "tone connoisseurs" out there that insist "I know autotune when I hear it", you're pulling shit out of your ass. There IS an audio problem on the vocals in this concert, but it isn't autotune. There are two mixes of Ben's voice; one is the dry mix and the other sounds like a delay. The delay is what is throwing most, if not all people off. It's very warbly and there is definitely something wrong with it. It's surprising the sound guys let it slip.
also, when your mouth isn't right on top of the the microphone (practically making out with it) the volume changes dramatically depending on where your mouth is with respect to the position of the microphone. for someone like ben, his movement produces part of the shakiness. the slight reverb and delay effects on the live mix of the vocals adds to it. Also, when music is streamed over the internet, there is a slight "warble" effect on the sound at times.
its either one of 2 things: ben is singing really low when he has a high voice so it sounds weird, or the most obvious is that in the description it clearly states that it was re-uploaded for better sound, which means that this video has sound problems. death cab doesn't use auto-tune they have actually publicly made statements against auto-tune so give it up people.
@SMELLYSCHLONG it's not like that in any other videos of death cab except for these ones... the producers of this show clearly put autotune afterwards. Which is a poor choice, because his voice is very naunced and doesn't need it, he's a good singer.
It's funny that people assume that because his vocals are so good that it's an autotune. That's how Earwashed people are because of the fucking shitty radio. What an absurd assumption towards such an organic band.
Its not autotune! the reason why Ben's voice sounds so tremoloy is cause Ben keeps shakeing and bouncing his body around during the perfomance. He does that a lot, he dances around when he performs.
Hell I even do that when I perform, I guess its a habit us musicians have. Its how we feel the music in us when we play. We feel the energy and the intensity of the song, and we just start moving around without even knowing. its how us musicians feel when we play and perform.
@PunkIsNotDead94 just thought i would point out that hayley williams of paramore can jump and keep a solid tone going, so i don't know its possible to move around and not have a shaky voice, not sure what the reason is but its whatev i still <3 DCFC
I dont get how this band isnt much bigger than they actually are. They have great music, unique composition, great singing, deep lyrics...it baffles the mind how no talent people are making it big while real musicians arent.
@crazymind Well, it doesn't really boggle the mind because most consumers of music sadly aren't interested in all the great qualities mentioned. It has been this way forever, and will continue to be, so let's just be happy that we are lucky enough to find bands like these, hm?
@pepperleg Partial blame has to be sent to the idiots who singed these sad excuses for musicians. But i disagree....it hasnt been like that forever. Back in the 60's the Beatles WERE music. And that was amazing. And in the 80's great music was everywhere. Basicaly when stupidity like SPears and boy bands showed up, thats when things started going downhill.
@harryspoonpotter no this is definitely not typical of an american crowd who is really into their band....its prolly a bunch of ppl who didn't really want to be there
Their bassist annoys the hell out of me, but this concert is pretty damn great, especially considering I've never respected them musically till I saw this.
The shakiness may just be poor encoding. I remember the performance on T.V. sounded flawless. In fact, I wasn't even a fan until Soundstage...now I love them.
theres no auto tune, the vocal range in this song is very low for him so it sounds weird because his voice shakes a little. Try singing consistently in an awkwardly low range and you'll see
well first off you can't really compare DCFC to DMB...and second I was exaggerating. they do have a few songs you could mosh to such as "We Laugh Indoors" tho
@BuffaloSinners Uh, no. You're deaf if you can't recognize the signature timbre of autotune. They probably could've gotten away with it if they had used a little less, but no, this is glaringly obvious.
@BuffaloSinners I'm afraid thats either a problem with the sound recording itself or a very very badly set autotune. Great band nevertheless. To be honest he probably doesn't need autotune but is forced to under the bands contract.
