Not surprised! Steinway is a good piano, but certainly not the only one worth playing as they want you to believe!
For pieces that require fluid action, pianos like Yamaha (only handcrafted ones), Fazioli or Bosendrofer would give you a little more edge believe it or not!
@Pollinifan I have an upright Yamaha, around 20 years old I believe, I'm told they are better than the later models, though i have never fully gelled with mine, surprisingly heavy action.
She has all the technique, all I need is some more musicality and emotion! I hope she can get to the finals of Queen Elisabeth 2010. I'll be cheering!
Her finger technique is absolutely beautiful, but in my humble opinion, she needs to learn how to use weight more i.e. playing with her whole body. This would improve her dynamic range and tone quality. Studying with a Russian teacher would be good for her. She's probably very good with impressionist repertory...
@dialecticon - Tell that to Ashkenazy my friend, he barely moves.. :-) As for the Russians, sure they won't ask her to break her fingers to make them stronger?
@dialecticon dynamic range lol, that was one of the most rectum-derived criticisms I've ever heard. Listen to her prokofiev or chopin sonata 3 finale.
Claire Huangci is definitely following the footsteps of great pianist and Leventritt gold medalist CECILE LICAD. Brava to you Claire, that was a superb-great performance !
I assume she is one of your favorite pianists. That's fine with me. I'm sorry I offended you. My favorite pianists are Pollini, Hamelin, Michelangeli, Richter, and Hodges. I just don't think she is the new Pollini, Argerich, or a Kissin. All three of them had major record contracts by the age of 18, Pollini being the only one who won a major competition at that point (Geneva doesn't count as major in my opinion). Why didn't she win the competition? Why without a major record deal?
@fdaltrey: Hold on there buddy. Today's record contracts are no in the slightest similar to the day of an 18 year old Pollini - daft point really.
An American pianist will not appeal as much as an European or Russian one, they never have and it's worse now. Besides, how do you know whether she has or hasn't been offered a contract already and has refused? Do you know her?
It's not just about how good you are, it's also about who you are AND whether you can sell records. ;-)
Regarding contracts, that's true. Argerich and Pollini were 18, fifty(!) years ago. Kissin is pretty recent, but he did have some fabulous PR since he was 12.
It's pure speculation, but I don't think anyone would refuse a recording contract. I can see how a young pianist would reject a 200 recital per year schedule to nurture growth, but would jump at the opportunity for a DG. Even Gavrilov and Pogorelich are contract-less as of now (their places taken by Lang Lang (!), Sara Ott etc)
I'm going to be harsh and say that it's unmusical. Uneven tone, rather harsh, phrases clipped, and rushed. She places uneven emphasis on passages. She definitely needs to listen more carefully what she's playing. I'm not surprised she didn't win the competition.
Well I hate to be harsh myself, but I'd love to see you play that piece half as well. It's one of the most difficult etudes out there and considering that she played it rather musically in my opinion.
who cares how "good" or "bad" it is? as long as the player enjoys the playing. some people don't bother with classical repertoire and are taken by meaningless popular dribble. the fact that anyone attempts to commit the great composers to memory is flattery in itself. i think that the amount of time one has spent studying the piano affects ones aesthetic ideological conjuration of criticism and exposes a lack in experience of the criticizer.
Holy freakin crap this girl is talented! Bravo!!! I know people that been playing for 40 years and can't even play this good. This is a God given talent.

Claire is indeed impressive. It is good that people are writing her biography to prove that she is a pianist of real stature at such a young age.

Yeah, I think I was way too mean in that criticism. It was a competition, so I'm sure it was a means to and end.
