I just got back home today from Yosemite it's such a beautiful place I was amazed I was in a heated tint by lower Yosemite falls I loved it so much I already miss it :( I didn't climb Half Dome tho we thought it would be to snowy
I have day-walked this route many times ... GO LIGHT !! ... it is much MORE FUN and just take a day pack of rain gear ,gloves , food munchies, and dry socks .
"Hey , Old Guy, you are not FIT unless you can do this in one day !!"
it's so cool that a chain of volcanoes can create this. all u see there is the magma chambers from dead volcanoes. that is where the mountains came from and it is beautiful
Bravo! What a take-your-breath-away experience. Inspiring to see this video, to really live and experience life. WOW, can't help but feel pumped and smile : )
Its been over 20 years since I was last at Yosemite. Some of the trail hikes I couldn't do because of my fear of heights. Even just watching you guys trek up the 90 degree side, cables and all, I felt the blood rush down my back. I would be afraid I'd fall or get blown of the mountain! Thanks for the video because I got to go somewhere I normally would other wise do on my own.
i went up the cables 2 years ago when i was 11 with my dad !! but we went the longer way and actually hiked with our sleeping bags and tent so it was pretty hard! yeah we started from Glacier Point then made our way to Little Yosemite Valley where we stayed the night and then went up Half Dome!! 18 miles!!! INSANE!!!
worked there from may to sept.most beautiful place ive ever been.
i hiked from yosemite valley to the top of half dome in 1 day..so beautiful on the top its like heaven up there you can see so much of the park from up there.its so worth it.
im scared of hights but if you do the 8 hours have to do that your missingout if you dont go to the top.
I went up to Vernal Falls, but still had one of the most memerable experiences ever! I think this year i'm going the whole way!!! HALF DOME! I'll need to start training again :]
I want to get a squirrel suit and jump off half dome!!! That would be the best thing ever!!!! So exhilarating!! GO TO YOSEMITE!!! no matter what, it's amazing! xXx
hey i'm planing on doing the hike my self, on my birthday this upcoming march, i have very little experience on backpacking is there any advice i should know, like food or water wise. thanks
I had some thing called a "camel pouch" or something, it's basically a small backpack with a sack of water in it with a hose that can reach your mouth. I just brought a few cliff bars which held me over to the top of Vernal Falls.
It's a 10-12 hour hike if you do it in one day, so be prepared.
@sotelito6 PLEASE do not attempt this hike until the cables are up in late spring - one little misstep and you can die! The trail can be slippery with ice! The Yosemtie Park webpage has excellent advice on preparing for this hike, including a checklist of necessary gear for a safe hike.
the thing is that my birthday is in march, also i wanna see yosemite on winter, thanks for the advice and AndyMH182 too.
i wanna do the two day trip where you stay on little yosemite over night, and then walk up there, and take some good panoramic pictures for my expo. thank you and i'll check the webpage again for more tips.
The Half Dome cables won't be up in March. The Park Service doesn't normally raise the cables until the snow is clear, which isn't until late April or May.
I was told that the cables are always there, but right now the posts and footboards aren't up, so the cable is laying on the rock. I wouldn't do it if you have never done half dome before. Climbing that without the posts would be difficult, the cable is very heavy.
also the best thing we ever did was to begin hiking up the halfdome (from the camp a little ways down) around 4am...we avoided the sun beating down on us 3/4 of the time climbing up and although i sweat my ass off i couldnt imagine doing this with the sun beating down on me
i did this with my mom and sis in two days..lol my poor 53 year old mom says shell never do it again..this was her second time doing it..the first time she did it she literally ruined her toenails after completing it in just ONE day..she now has artificial toe nails
i just got intohiking little did i know it was hard going up mt whitney in 12 hours 22 miles, half domne is my next quest. hiking just sshows u how awesome nature is
Started at 6:00am, got to the bottom of the cables at 9:05am, waited for my group for an hour and a half, waited some more for them to replenish, finally climbed the cables at 11:45am, got to the top of half dome at 1:30pm, stayed up there for 2 hours, took pictures, climbed back down, did not get back to camp until 7:00pm due to dehydration and a wrong route. When i finally got to camp I dove right into a small creek with freezing water for about 5 minutes, warmed up infront of camp fire, slept
Started at 6am, and made it to the top of half dome at 11:40. Ran, yes, ran back from the top until we hit the water right near the sand, and we swam. We were at the car at 3pm.
I don't do a lot of hiking, just other sports and I finished this fine. I was sore the next day but that's it. We had a ten year old with us who made it to the bottom of the cables. If you drink enough water your fine. It took us 12 hours.
I just hiked Half Dome 2 weeks ago, and it was by far the hardest workout I ever completed. The cables are a lot easier than they look. I was terrified at first, but once I started everything was fine.
This Yosemite Half Dome hike is the best amateur hike in North America. It is everything as adventurous to be for a whole day experience unlike any other. The final cables at the face is sheer terror. It is psycholocally terrifying, as I spent about 30-minutes pondering if I wanted to tackle this, and if worth dying for. I finally did it as it is quite an accomplishment. I recommend everyone physically fit who wants the ultimate challenge to cheat death face first !!
I did half dome when i was like 11, nearly killed me, all 17 miles, took like 18 hours. then this summer i did it again, but with a backpack, went from mono meadows to little yosemite valley, next day up and down half dome, and then down the the valley the next day. it was so amazing, and i was really sad to leave. i cant wait till the next time.
I have had the pleasure of doing the Half Dome hike a couple of times and enjoy the stunning views every time. Have done the Mist Trail as this guy is doing to, be really hard on the knees since its really big steps. Prefer to do the John Muir Trail but it all comes down to liking. The cables was really scary the first I tried it, but if you start early 4 am or so, you will avoid the mases of people and can do the climb at own pace. Wearing a good pair of boots really help on the climb
when i went a week ago there was like a 45 minute wait at the cables, and the cables were packed you would only move 5 feet every 10 minutes. it only took me 12 hours round trip though.
That summarize it very well. With staircases and cables, everybody can do it but it's still very dangerous. 2 people died during the 3 days I was there. I did not get to the top of half dome, but even from Nevada falls or glacier point, the view is stunning. And a little bit less dangerous.
The last part reminds me of "stairway to heaven" in kaneohe hawaii. It was a hell of a hike but the view is worth it especially when you are the first people to see the sun rise for the day
How is it a religious experience? I'm sure it's a fun, though difficult experience, but a religious one? It's not like you're listening to a sermon the whole way up.
Not making fun, just curious as to how it is relative.
I stated that when you reach the top not during the hike, it was a religious experience. ... I love to hike. Mountains seem to elevate you above the ground closer to the sky and feels like closer to God.
I'm going to yosimite this weekend... maybe ill climb it. Im sure I could do it I am a gymnast and i train a lot. It would be pretty embarrassing to pass out on the trek though

Brotha, im from coloRADo. I rock climb, i ski, i snowboard, i kayak, i take huge hikes, i climb fourteeners, i white water raft, moutain bike ride, i backcountry snowboard, and i water ski, i wake board. AND......i can do that all within 20 from where i live. SO SUCK MY FUCKING DICK......and get your mind out of the california gutter. you sheltered piece f fucking shit. hahahahahahahaha race car driver? this is colorado, not the FUCKIN south, you uneducated peice of FUCK.
Dealing with the dehydration(you will probably run out of water at some point)and overall fatigue. Don't worry though, it's worth every second... I'm going again this spring.
Lol... I actually got lost on my way to half dome, and ended up on top of cloud rest. Then came back down and hiked up to half dome all took me about 11 hrs. It turned out to be a total of about 28 miles and about 7 or 8 thousands feet elevation gain; can't remember the exact number ... but something like that
I did this over the summer and it was SO hard! I got altitude sickness and I was a mess... despite preparing for months (physically and mentally). Wow!
wow im 14 and i just did this a couple weeks ago and reefercity is right just do it in 1 day,i had to do 20.something miles in one day and it took this guy 2 i also had to carry a backpack with all our stuff with a gallon of water
Just came back from Half Dome in September and the hike is not for the faint of heart and the cables are scary. Just hang on and enjoy the hike...! It was worth every step and the views from the top...breath taking!
I have never been anywhere near Yosemite Park, I live outside of the US. But man, wow.
I discovered this by finding a picture of Half Dome in my new computers sample pictures. I am not sorry for taking the time to look it up and watch this video.
Now I know that the next time I visit the states, I will be visiting Yosemite Park as my no. 1 destination point!
Been there, done this, nine times - all in one day! 200lbs of gear?!?!? What are they carrying?!?!? ...a kitchen sink?!?!? Real men and women do this in a day. Great hike! The trail has had MAJOR improvements since this video was made.
For your tenth trip, try carrying a Sony broadcast camcorder, tripod, lenses, cables, audio gear and enough batteries to shoot for fifteen hours without recharging. Then take the time to record every move, retrace your steps to shoot close-ups and different angles, stop (while everyone else continues hiking) to capture the great scenery, interview other hikers along the way, and come back with enough great material to construct an 8-minute broadcast story for a major-market television series.
For me, I keep traveling light. For you, I am very impressed and applaud the finished product. I am certain you'll agree that the Half Dome train is not for the faint of heart. It requires both mental and physical ability working together, especially on the way back down when it feels like your body is being pounded into the ground like a tent stake. Unlike some of the nut-jobs that comment on You Tube, I sincerely mean the compliment. You guys truly are amazing! Keep up the good work.
@openroadtv You did a good job shooting that scenery. Im compl. aware about how hard it must have been for especially you to do the job. Im jealous for the trip in itself definitely not your job. Though i must say i wouldnt mind having your job, which hopefully is well paid.
Not to excuse ReeferCity's rudeness or lack of attention to details, but I believe they mean they've done it 9 times, each time in one day, not 9 in a single day.
in the video the trip to half dome took two days- night of rest. is it possible to do a round trip from the valley to the peak of half dome and back in one day?
Yes. Many do it. Best is to get a ride to Glasier Point, very early, then hike from there. Views out of this world!!! Then on the way back, hike to the valley floor.
yes it's possible! make sure you allow about 10 hours to complete it. My brother is not a hiker at all and he did it with me in 11 hours... good luck, it's an adventure to remember...
I did it this past weekend. It took me 13 hours from curry village to and back with plenty of resting. I plan to go back again in july to get some good pictures at the top and a long video.
Most people do it in a day starting from the valley. It's really not that tough if you are in half way decent shape. Take the John Muir route on the way up and the Nevada/Vernal falls route on the way down.
No, it's not 90%. It's something more like 40-45% but varies. Don't know the actual figure. Yes, some people have fallen, just last year in fact but all you have to do is hang on to the cables.
I have done this Hike 6 times. 3 times before Memorial Day Weekend When the cables were down. Meaning they are just lying against the Dome and you have to pick them up and hold on. I will always climb half dome, as long as I am able
I just hiked to the top of the falls ( real top ) and I have to say...that was pretty hard in itself, not to mention the fear of falling boulders. another 2000 feet would be crazy.
i did it in 11 hours

word of advice for aspiring adventurers: Bring LOTS of water and pack some trail mix for extra boosts of energy along the way!!

I got the chance to climb half dome last summer...one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. the cables are the best part.
Nighthrone 3 years ago
I want to climb half dome next May. Im 51 and in decent shape. What is the hardest part besides the dome itself?
NEVERWRONG1957 3 years ago

Wow!

Just came back from Half Dome in September and the hike is not for the faint of heart and the cables are scary. Just hang on and enjoy the hike...! It was worth every step and the views from the top...breath taking!
darren1276 3 years ago
You made the cables look like a walk in the park. I was cursing you when I got there. INTIMIDATING!

Yosemite is the most beautiful place in the world I have ever visited (and I am not from the U.S.A., but Colombia).

ReeferCity 3 years ago
@openroadtv You did a good job shooting that scenery. Im compl. aware about how hard it must have been for especially you to do the job. Im jealous for the trip in itself definitely not your job. Though i must say i wouldnt mind having your job, which hopefully is well paid.

9 times in one day. that's incredible, and impossible.
BenBen153 1 year ago
@BenBen153
Not to excuse ReeferCity's rudeness or lack of attention to details, but I believe they mean they've done it 9 times, each time in one day, not 9 in a single day.

in the video the trip to half dome took two days- night of rest. is it possible to do a round trip from the valley to the peak of half dome and back in one day?
tornsaeteurn 3 years ago
Yes. Many do it. Best is to get a ride to Glasier Point, very early, then hike from there. Views out of this world!!! Then on the way back, hike to the valley floor.
JerryHughes11111 3 years ago
yes it's possible! make sure you allow about 10 hours to complete it. My brother is not a hiker at all and he did it with me in 11 hours... good luck, it's an adventure to remember...
opirir 3 years ago
I did it this past weekend. It took me 13 hours from curry village to and back with plenty of resting. I plan to go back again in july to get some good pictures at the top and a long video.
tornsaeteurn 3 years ago
Most people do it in a day starting from the valley. It's really not that tough if you are in half way decent shape. Take the John Muir route on the way up and the Nevada/Vernal falls route on the way down.
estopsteve74 3 years ago
No no: It's Mist Trail up and Muir down. Mist is much steeper.
Jitpring 3 years ago
Everyone has their preference. I guess if you wanted the easiest of all take the Muir up AND down. :)
estopsteve74 3 years ago
After watching Huell Houser make this trip,my oldest son and I have this on our Yosemite agenda.Looks like a lot of fun!:-)

What is the actual angle measure of the cable portion of the hike?
madtownsuperstar 3 years ago
No, it's not 90%. It's something more like 40-45% but varies. Don't know the actual figure. Yes, some people have fallen, just last year in fact but all you have to do is hang on to the cables.
JerryHughes11111 3 years ago
I wen't to little yosemite valley and turned around there cuz the cables were down
chchainsaw20 3 years ago
Did you go up Mist Trail or John Muir?
Do you think it would be easier from Glacier Point and then down to the valley?

looked like the mist trail to me

Question :
How may hours will take to climb starting from the Valley ?
Tostito12345 3 years ago
I have done this Hike 6 times. 3 times before Memorial Day Weekend When the cables were down. Meaning they are just lying against the Dome and you have to pick them up and hold on. I will always climb half dome, as long as I am able
lilmissandyfeet 3 years ago
I just hiked to the top of the falls ( real top ) and I have to say...that was pretty hard in itself, not to mention the fear of falling boulders. another 2000 feet would be crazy.
