The lyrics through all three songs are pretty fucking intense. Aside from telling a great story in three different styles, "Alive" deals with a boy learning his real father is dead, being forced into a incestuous relationship with his mother, and suffering from survivor's guilt. "Once" is about the boy growing up into a savage serial killer. Then this song is him finally peeling back his rage and confusion and saying he'll never forgive his mother as he waits to be executed for his murders.
the Vedder Trilogy...which is a mock up of his times with "dad" Alive...Once then Footsteps...listening to them in that order is sweet storytelling...
@TheGargantuanSock Yes, Eddie did write the lyrics for Footsteps...He acutally wrote them before he even knew the guys from Pearl Jam because he sent Stone and Jeff a demo tape called "Momma-Son" after Andy died and Mother Love Bone split, and they were looking for a singer. Footsteps was one of those songs on the demo tape that Eddie sent in.
Two things guys, and I mean no disrespect: First, Eddie and Chris have both described each other, on multiple occasions, as being great singers and their bands' healthy competition powered them to the top of the Seattle scene and eventually the world; so why do we compare them if they themselves wouldn't? Second, how can you really compare two singers/writers that are so different in style, approach, and history, as Eddie and Chris? Eddie is kinda low and personal, Chris is high and existential.
@cgnetwork1 Might as well attempt to compare Mozart and Bach, Picasso and Van Gogh, Me and you. People so much want to simplify art. It can't be done. Maybe that is why it is ever evolving and never stagnant. Ok by me.
Efff what everyone thinks. Eddie and PJ have proven to be one of the best things to happen to music in the last 20+ years (and hell yes, the FOO). This song rocks and moves you to your soul. Voices in My head...modern day Lizard King?

I had previously only known about "times of trouble", but when i heard this it blew my mind O_o chris may be my favorite vocalist, but eddie sure killed it
If you type 'Mamasan' into Google it predicts 'Mamasandpapas.' Which in the intense world of 'Pearl Jam' allegiance may or may not hold huge significance. :)
'mamasan' is an Asian term (slang) for a woman of authority, specifically the head of a geisha house. Or in simple terms. A woman who runs a brothel. The second song in the trilogy 'Alive' is about a young man (thought to be Eddie) visiting a brothel. The line "I can't remember anything to this very day 'cept the look, the look Oh, you know where, now I can't see, I just stare" is the young man looking between the woman's legs.
People who think Eddie Vedder sounds more soulful and passionate than Chris Cornell go listen to Four walled world by temple of the dog. Of course, no doubt they are both two of the best vocalists ever. I still prefer Chris though.
the one constant in my life for the last 20 years has been pj, love this song so much. I can't be anymore coherent than that , it just takes me away...
I have been listening to Pearl Jam for most of my life, and in fact have a T-Shirt with this picture on it, but this is somehow the first time i noticed that the girl was holding a gun, wow i feel like an idiot...
This song is actually one of the first Eddie put lyrics on for what was not yet Pearl Jam. He made a demo out of three songs that Stone, Jeff, Mike, and Matt recorded and sent out to him while searching for a singer for a potential new band. The three songs he recorded are all part of a trillogy. The first being Alive (Story of childhood abuse/neglect), then Once (The child becomes a killer), and lastly Footsteps(The man reflects on his life while in prison).
@beeswaxlike I don't know if you are criticizing Pearl Jam made a version of Times of Trouble, but this song was written by Stone Grossard, and he gave it to Eddie write lyrics to song, like a test to join the new band they are forming.
@sergioj17 Now that you mention it I might have read about this ages ago in some bio text, but I don't think it mentioned that "Footsteps" was a version of ToT. I don't think it's wrong to make a new version, it was just my way of saying that the original is much better. A tribute to ToTD, rather than criticism against PJ.
Despite the subject, this song is strangely beautiful. It is incredibly moving and I simply can't stop listening to it, whether happy or sad, this song fits the mood
@TheName14100 It's not a cover. Stone wrote the music and both Cornell and Vedder wrote lyrics to the music. Eddie while Pearl Jam was recording Ten and Cornell while Temple of the Dog was recording their tribute to Andrew Wood. Two different sets of Lyrics to the same music, Stone is a lucky man not to many people can claim that both Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell penned lyrics to one of their music. That must mean Stone Gossard is not to bad at this writing music stuff.
I believe when Andy died...Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers told his band ,Mother Love Bone, about Eddie in San Diego. They gave him some recorded tracks and Eddie laid down this demo as an audition for the new lead Singer position Andy opened up. Temple of the Dog was after that cause Eddie and Chris do a duet on that album....Love them Both...But Eddie won me in the end cause his heart comes across more than Chris...in so many songs that I can personally relate to myself.
really?.....I didn't know that slapstick...thanks for the heads up....oh and hudson?....I was just kinda thinking out loud....no need to get snippy my good friend....I suppose mostly I actually wrote my thoughts out, because I was a HUGE pearl jam fan when TEN came out, and then I just saw the power of their band get smaller and smaller till it was mostly unlistenable to me....kind of the way live's music was so deep and just got more and more radio as the albums progressed.
this is totally a rip off of their earlier work with Temple of the Dog....really?......I mean, times of trouble is a good song, and this is good too, but c'mon.....really?
@roodog1974 Both songs stem from the same demo. Stone Gossard gave copies to Eddie and Chris and each wrote their own lyrics and melody. Also its likely that Eddie wrote his version before Chris wrote his
every comment above and below me that says anything with worthless self made opinions of chris cornell while watching a video of eddie vedder singing to the same tune of chris cornells own solo song performed with temple of the dog Times Of Trouble is pointless and doesnt deserve to be read and by the way nickleback sucks and chris cornell remains the man with eddie vedder right on his heels but not in the number 1 spot Chris Cornell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@oticgrl ? man... youtube is a really 'cool' weapon to attack people on free-time. I was just saying I love Pearl Jam's sounds and Eddie's lyrics.. If you don't agree, thumb down. I don't have to much free time to you... Happy New Year.
Compare Eddie and Chris on Temple of the Dog and Chris will make you hair stand on end but latterly, I am not sure of his direction and I think Eddie has kept truer to form.
Compare Eddie and Chris on Temple of the Dog and Chris will make you hair stand on end but latterly, I am not sure of his direction and I think Eddie has kept truer to form.
the reason the two songs are similar is because they're a tribute to Mother Love Bone's Singer, who committed suicide by heroin overdosing in 91. the ENTIRE Temple of the Dog project began because Vedder did Footsteps and Cornell loved the idea cuz they all missed the same freind.Just a little background.Footsteps started it all.I just had to give credit where it was due in history!
I think people who try to establish their subjective opinion as fact have a lot to learn about art and life itself. There is no *best* art, no *best* artist, only preference. This is Stone Gossard's riff and he offered it to both group of musicians and the results of both are, in my opinion, stunning. I "prefer" Eddie Vedder's take on the song. But for me, this is like choosing one smart, gorgeous woman over another smart, gorgeous woman. The difference is almost trivial.
hanster not tryign to start shit but its hard to say one is better then the other music is an opinion therefore they are bioth great just diffetrent perspectives )I myself enjoy both
NO.The Pearl Jam version is better...but..where is the original PJ version WITHOUT the harmonica.I posted before about how the harmonica is totally out of place, added later it sounds like an afterthought.
@superfatbass That is what I said. I have this cd single and this is not the "Footsteps" that is on there. The one from Lost Dogs has the harmonica on it and the one from Jeremy single doesn't because Stone and Ed did it live in a radio studio.
Cornell is (in my opinion) the best male singer of the 90's and possibly ever. Just the way his voice hives me chills. Vedder is great, but doesn't stand a chance against early cornell. lyrically and vocally, Times of Trouble is superior to this. People who think Cornell is a bad live performer, go look up Beyond the Wheel live from 88-92.
@TheGargantuanSock Sorry if i hurt your feelings man! I'm just saying, why the hell do both these songs sound so similar? You have to admit the Temple version blows this one out of the water. Cornell in his prime!
@HamsterFueledRocket I think both songs are equally good. This was one of Eddie Vedder's demo tapes from before Pearl Jam was, and Stone wrote the music for Time of Trouble. Cornell's vocals in Times of Trouble are better, but Vedder's give a more emotional and personal feel. The harmonica in this song is better, but the full band gives Times of Trouble a new dimension kind of. Footsteps however could only work with an acoustic guitar. Both songs are fantastic.
@TheGargantuanSock I'm thinking douche was looking to provoke. Nice track, no, very awesome version. i had a version very similar via those Myspace music boxes you could upload stuff etc...., very clear as here in the studio, but live, and the audience behind him, it was awesome . Too bad that company went belly up or whatever, as I've been searching for something close ever since.to no avail, ha. Thx~
@HamsterFueledRocket It was on Pearl Jam's demo tape first I think. A tape that Ament, Gossard, and McCready gave to Jack Irons, who gave it to Vedder, who wrote lyrics and sang over 3 songs: Once, Alive, and Footsteps. It was kinda cool cause Eddie just played the tape and re recorded it with him singing, without ever meeting the rest of the band
I like Temple of the dog version better ,cause Eddie is struggling while singing , unlike Chris Cornell who is one of the best male vocals that ever lived.
I guees that's why Cornell sounds awful live and Vedder still sings superbly... Chris can barely sing any of the older Soundgarden tunes and hasn't done anything relevant musically for nearly a decade. To call him one of the best male vocalists ever is just laughable.
@TheGargantuanSock well, it's true ,he often sang pretty bad live ,but he had great moments as well, also ,he sings quite a lot higher than Eddie ,so when he's singing live ,it definitely requires a lot more talent and skill. Don't get me wrong , I didn't mean to offend Eddie ,but I just think Chris is way more talented singer.
If you can't replicate your voice in a studio when you're singing live, then you aren't a great singer. As you say it takes more talent and skill to hit those notes but Cornell screams to hit the higher notes and strains his vocal chords in the process because he isn't talented enough to sing them. The fact that he is mostly incapable of hitting them anyway shows he's not looked after his vocal chords. It's a shame, but I'll still be going to see Soundgarden if the reunion works out!
@TheGargantuanSock he was one of the best, and audioslaves first album was extremelly good, but after that and his two new solo albums were a total let down. he destroyed his voice in the late 90s early 2000s. and this was earlyish for vedder his voice isnt his best here
I disagree. He undid himself through his own greatness. Best untrained voice ever, most modern singers in their prime could never match early soundgarden. Beyond the wheel is a prime example. The only exception is Jeff Buckley.
I totally get what you're saying. Beyond the Wheel is ipmossible to repliate for most modern singers... but the same is true for Cornell himself. Even in the early days he simply couldn't do his own songs justice when singing live, and now he can even butcher them. Yes he had one of the greatest untrained voices, but in doing so he also ruled himself out of the running for being one of the best male vocalists ever. At the end of the day he's in the same boat as Brian Johnson.
@venusasaboy1991 I think they both rock, i will give it to cornell for his range and power as an overall singer, he cant sing as high as the soundgarden days but i think his lower voice is better. He can sing anything, id listen to him sing a fricken phone book.
Veder, on the other hand doesnt have a very technical or wide voice, but its unique, trade marked, clear, edgy and perfectly suited to his music, no one can do what veder does.
@TheGargantuanSock Idk, people give Audioslave too much shit for not being Rage or Soundgarden. Audioslave is one of the few really solid rock bands of the decade, especially on their last two albums.
I try to judge a band on their own merits, and in my opinion Audioslave were merely a failed experiment. I thought their second album was reasonable but the other two were just weak. I'm not sure people are giving them shit for not being Rage or Soundgarden... they tried to amalgamate the two so the band at best sounded like a side project. It would've been an interesting one too had they not dragged it out for so long. Fortunately both Rage and Soundgarden are back together now!
@TheGargantuanSock Out of Exile was fantastic. Audioslave had a few really great songs; pretty much the singles, Bring 'em Back Alive, and Getaway Car. Revelations was also really good as an album. Everyone I have ever talked with about the band try to compare it to SG or RATM, and it isn't fair to do. I know I'll get nothing but hate for saying this, but even despite Cornell's weak (in comparison) vocals with Audioslave they were better than RATM.
@Eifler121 I agree man! I could never get into Rage, but Audioslave was pretty much the best thing going on in the early 2000s. I don't care what anyone says, their first album kicked ass and I played it way to many times.
@Eifler121 I pretty much loved every song on that album individually, I guess if your really into the whole idea of an "album", then it may be a bit weak, but that whole concept is starting to die with the invention of iTunes and p2p networking. It had some great songs though.
@HamsterFueledRocket I'm not particularly, but it can be cool. It's just there were like 6 or 7 songs I "loved". I "like" all of them except like one. I listen to it in its entirety, so I'm not sure which track it is exactly.
@HamsterFueledRocket Check out Days of the New. I meant kind of like just albums that carry the same tone throughout. For example, revelations had a lot of retro influences. Superunknown had that trippy, feeling nothing kind of depressed tone throughout. Idk, I could use other bands, but I know you obviously are a Cornell fan, so i'll stick with that.
@TheGargantuanSock Completely disagree. Love both singers, and just seen Soundgarden in Seattle not too long ago. Cornell sounded great doing songs like Gun, Jesus Christ Pose, and Slaves and Bulldozers. He used to sing Alive during the mid section of S&B, and he sounded great.. Check most anywhere in critic circles and they will put Cornell close to the top of all time male rock vocalists. He simply has a higher range than Vedder, and that's not to knock on Eddie, but it's just a fact.
@TheGargantuanSock Also, who are you kidding, Audioslave has been much more relevant for the last decade than Pearl Jam. To prove this, I know this is sad to bring up view counts, but Audioslave's song, "Like A Stone," has more views than any one Pearl Jam song sans Black.
Love! Love! Love! :-)

I have been listening to Pearl Jam for most of my life, and in fact have a T-Shirt with this picture on it, but this is somehow the first time i noticed that the girl was holding a gun, wow i feel like an idiot...
Shepherd492 6 months ago 2
This song is actually one of the first Eddie put lyrics on for what was not yet Pearl Jam. He made a demo out of three songs that Stone, Jeff, Mike, and Matt recorded and sent out to him while searching for a singer for a potential new band. The three songs he recorded are all part of a trillogy. The first being Alive (Story of childhood abuse/neglect), then Once (The child becomes a killer), and lastly Footsteps(The man reflects on his life while in prison).

"I've got scratches, all over my arms....One for each day, since I fell apart"
-One of my favorite lines out of every Pearl Jam song. Will always remind me of my brother and give me goosebumps.

Soundgarden should have made a song called "It's TIMES OF TROUBLE, Biatch".
beeswaxlike 7 months ago
@beeswaxlike I don't know if you are criticizing Pearl Jam made a version of Times of Trouble, but this song was written by Stone Grossard, and he gave it to Eddie write lyrics to song, like a test to join the new band they are forming.
sergioj17 5 months ago
@sergioj17 Now that you mention it I might have read about this ages ago in some bio text, but I don't think it mentioned that "Footsteps" was a version of ToT. I don't think it's wrong to make a new version, it was just my way of saying that the original is much better. A tribute to ToTD, rather than criticism against PJ.

what awsome times of trouble cover
TheName14100 9 months ago

Temple of the Dog was after that cause Eddie and Chris do a duet on that album....Love them Both...But Eddie won me in the end cause his heart comes across more than Chris...in so many songs that I can personally relate to myself.

the reason the two songs are similar is because they're a tribute to Mother Love Bone's Singer, who committed suicide by heroin overdosing in 91. the ENTIRE Temple of the Dog project began because Vedder did Footsteps and Cornell loved the idea cuz they all missed the same freind.Just a little background.Footsteps started it all.I just had to give credit where it was due in history!
Nkosazana7 1 year ago
@Nkosazana7 Wood didn't commit suicide, he just died of an accidental overdose. And I'm pretty sure that happened in '90, not '91.

The difference is almost trivial.

superfatbass 1 year ago
@superfatbass That is what I said. I have this cd single and this is not the "Footsteps" that is on there. The one from Lost Dogs has the harmonica on it and the one from Jeremy single doesn't because Stone and Ed did it live in a radio studio.
MrGossardX 1 year ago
Cornell is (in my opinion) the best male singer of the 90's and possibly ever. Just the way his voice hives me chills. Vedder is great, but doesn't stand a chance against early cornell. lyrically and vocally, Times of Trouble is superior to this. People who think Cornell is a bad live performer, go look up Beyond the Wheel live from 88-92.

Erm, no... can you actually explain why you think these lyrics are crap or are you merely trying to provoke a negative reaction?
TheGargantuanSock 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock Sorry if i hurt your feelings man! I'm just saying, why the hell do both these songs sound so similar? You have to admit the Temple version blows this one out of the water. Cornell in his prime!
HamsterFueledRocket 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket I think both songs are equally good. This was one of Eddie Vedder's demo tapes from before Pearl Jam was, and Stone wrote the music for Time of Trouble. Cornell's vocals in Times of Trouble are better, but Vedder's give a more emotional and personal feel. The harmonica in this song is better, but the full band gives Times of Trouble a new dimension kind of. Footsteps however could only work with an acoustic guitar. Both songs are fantastic.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket
I completely disagree, think the lyrics and pure simplicity of this version make it far more powerful.

@TheGargantuanSock I'm thinking douche was looking to provoke. Too bad that company went belly up or whatever, as I've been searching for something close ever since.to no avail, ha. Thx~
ImWithTheTide 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket It was on Pearl Jam's demo tape first I think. A tape that Ament, Gossard, and McCready gave to Jack Irons, who gave it to Vedder, who wrote lyrics and sang over 3 songs: Once, Alive, and Footsteps. It was kinda cool cause Eddie just played the tape and re recorded it with him singing, without ever meeting the rest of the band

I like Temple of the dog version better ,cause Eddie is struggling while singing , unlike Chris Cornell who is one of the best male vocals that ever lived.
bmiha 1 year ago
@bmiha
I guees that's why Cornell sounds awful live and Vedder still sings superbly... Chris can barely sing any of the older Soundgarden tunes and hasn't done anything relevant musically for nearly a decade. To call him one of the best male vocalists ever is just laughable.
TheGargantuanSock 1 year ago 4
@TheGargantuanSock well, it's true ,he often sang pretty bad live ,but he had great moments as well, also ,he sings quite a lot higher than Eddie ,so when he's singing live ,it definitely requires a lot more talent and skill. Don't get me wrong , I didn't mean to offend Eddie ,but I just think Chris is way more talented singer.
bmiha 1 year ago
@bmiha
TheGargantuanSock 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock he was one of the best, and audioslaves first album was extremelly good, but after that and his two new solo albums were a total let down. he destroyed his voice in the late 90s early 2000s. and this was earlyish for vedder his voice isnt his best here
sonny070795 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock
I disagree. He undid himself through his own greatness. Best untrained voice ever, most modern singers in their prime could never match early soundgarden. Beyond the wheel is a prime example. The only exception is Jeff Buckley.
venusasaboy1991 1 year ago
@venusasaboy1991
TheGargantuanSock 1 year ago
@venusasaboy1991 I think they both rock, i will give it to cornell for his range and power as an overall singer, he cant sing as high as the soundgarden days but i think his lower voice is better. He can sing anything, id listen to him sing a fricken phone book.
Veder, on the other hand doesnt have a very technical or wide voice, but its unique, trade marked, clear, edgy and perfectly suited to his music, no one can do what veder does.
saddler360 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock Idk, people give Audioslave too much shit for not being Rage or Soundgarden. Audioslave is one of the few really solid rock bands of the decade, especially on their last two albums.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@Eifler121
TheGargantuanSock 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock Out of Exile was fantastic. Audioslave had a few really great songs; pretty much the singles, Bring 'em Back Alive, and Getaway Car. Revelations was also really good as an album. Everyone I have ever talked with about the band try to compare it to SG or RATM, and it isn't fair to do. I know I'll get nothing but hate for saying this, but even despite Cornell's weak (in comparison) vocals with Audioslave they were better than RATM.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@Eifler121 I agree man! I could never get into Rage, but Audioslave was pretty much the best thing going on in the early 2000s. I don't care what anyone says, their first album kicked ass and I played it way to many times.
HamsterFueledRocket 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket I think their first album was their weakest as a whole actually.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@Eifler121 I pretty much loved every song on that album individually, I guess if your really into the whole idea of an "album", then it may be a bit weak, but that whole concept is starting to die with the invention of iTunes and p2p networking. It had some great songs though.
HamsterFueledRocket 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket I'm not particularly, but it can be cool. It's just there were like 6 or 7 songs I "loved". I "like" all of them except like one. I listen to it in its entirety, so I'm not sure which track it is exactly.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@Eifler121 I guess some albums like Abbey Road can be pretty amazing. How the songs all bleed together into one. But artists rarely do that nowadays.
HamsterFueledRocket 1 year ago
@HamsterFueledRocket Check out Days of the New. I meant kind of like just albums that carry the same tone throughout. For example, revelations had a lot of retro influences. Superunknown had that trippy, feeling nothing kind of depressed tone throughout. Idk, I could use other bands, but I know you obviously are a Cornell fan, so i'll stick with that.
Eifler121 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock Completely disagree. Love both singers, and just seen Soundgarden in Seattle not too long ago. Cornell sounded great doing songs like Gun, Jesus Christ Pose, and Slaves and Bulldozers. He used to sing Alive during the mid section of S&B, and he sounded great.. Check most anywhere in critic circles and they will put Cornell close to the top of all time male rock vocalists. He simply has a higher range than Vedder, and that's not to knock on Eddie, but it's just a fact.
sOsSpArTa 1 year ago
@TheGargantuanSock Also, who are you kidding, Audioslave has been much more relevant for the last decade than Pearl Jam. To prove this, I know this is sad to bring up view counts, but Audioslave's song, "Like A Stone," has more views than any one Pearl Jam song sans Black.
sOsSpArTa 1 year ago
