  • What a solo from Declan!

  • can somebody give me the lyircs to this? im sure this is a diffrent version he is singing to the one i have

  • Legend!!! Sin é..

  • this is pure class!!!

  • Just a Magnificent moment of Magic, mesmerizing......

  • sometimes we forget when dec forgets what hes on about .no we cant effir forget. yi dont hive tae remember dec.

  • there was another fecking amazing performance by the boys of this song on Youtube yesterday...

    And now its gone ?!?!??!?

  • Great stuff from one of the greatest living Irishmen and superb playing from Dec. Wonderful.

  • Classic....When will the heros come from the shadows ??

  • perfection

  • What makes this song for me is Dec's guitar playing in which he seems to have an out of body experience towards the end.

  • Best ever, says it all !

  • christy top class again

  • Brilliant, thank you xx

  • Man, what a shite song, no music in it whatsoever! Christy Moore is a shite musician anyway, but this is hellishly awful, sounds like a dying goat being dragged through the streets!!!! Turn if off!!!

  • declan plays so so beautifully. Empathy, modesty. What a wing man.

  • Dis should be dee Irish national anthem - rock on!?!

  • What an utterly briliant version of an utterly magnificent song..the Roy Bailey version is also absolutely awe-inspiring, worth a listen as the harmony is slightly different..

I love Christys' vocals on this though, and the great accompanying lead guitar over those sublime acoustic chords.

  • rojo is interesting there, i wonder howc much christy has acquiesced or mellowed or whatever with time.. zeitgeist has to have a bearing here.. also everything changes regardless, thank christ

  • These 2 come 'alive durin' dor 'tune-up-moments'-- 'once-off-sounds'. Like Git saids.. we'll probly never play it again ... makes bein' dere 'special...Masters of spontinatiety(!)

  • PLAY IT LOUD LADS WAT A SONG

  • I was braught up with Christy I went to a concert with my dad in Glasgow to see him and I'm 15, Im not afraid to show my Irish Heritage! TIOCFAIDH AR LA!

  • @MrRastaJoe Im the same as you i was brought up with him and i feckin love him!!

  • Pity he hasn't got the balls to sing the songs that made him................

Its now fashionable to listen to the ''artist''. He was better when he was slugging pint bottles of warm stout - He had attitude and opinions back then, and sang as though he meant it...... He now sings cartoon music to make the nice people smile.............. Greed took over Kit!

  • it's all good ,but it ,s not over until sinn fein

  • love the song but the war is over now we have to move on in peaceful means

  • @republicanforever ....Unfortunate the 'unionjack' still flies high over the people..... Oh, and brit soldiers(and der guns..) still wait in der barraks - 'only 2 'bac-up' the 'civil police of course...Oh, but thats right, the 'war's over now.. Yes 'things' hav changed.... jus not di 'important things... On a 'lighter level... Christy & Declan....live... pure fookin' class

  • Just wonderful...my tears are for the beauty of the song, for my anger at those who have oppressed (and still do), for my sadness for those who have suffered for their 'otherness'(and still do) and for my humble respect for those who fought and still fight for freedom- wherever and whenever.

Thank you for this awe inspiring post.

  • love your comment to christy and declan, respect, from clare

  • think you should listen to isle of hope and isle of tears you might like it

  • Did listen, do like it, thanks for the pointer..

  • very nice words ....

  • The whole gig was genius!

  • this guy would destroy any guitar player out there clapton is overated. that improv was genius.

  • Horslips loss was Christys gain

  • Bobby, Patsy, Biko, iad suid ag troid ar son domhan alainn, ni dheanfaidh muid dearmad daoibh choiche. Beir bua!!!

  • Love this !

  • just pure history in a song, thanks christy i had that sound of the siren and its not nice but we came through it mo chairde and things can only get better and if not then we r ready, havent gone away you know, beirigh bua

  • well said my friend...come visit us anytime!!

  • That is very awesome. I definitely would not get tired listening to these guys.

  • Tiocfaidh ar la !!! But its not any more. Its now just 'AR LA'!!! as a wise landlord told me in London

  • Comment removed

  • well, more Americans did listen and understand their terrible time of the past 8 years. Do we dare to hope for a new dawn in which all peoples will have free expression, freedom from fear, want, and religious persecution? Until then, No Time for Love (aka If They Come in the Morning) will be heard.

  • What subtle song

It allows us to understand the sacrifice the freedom's fighters made for the Cause

  • reply to chatdelouve

that is the sacrifice that freedom fighters made for Freedom.. not entirely the cause that you imagine.

Two men man enough to play their instruments with this passion are men enough not to want to romanticize those who rip women and children apart in the name of a country.

Time has come for every englishman to spit in the face of the queen - tell her that she was a whore for being the figurehead when bloody sunday happened. and for the irish to be proud, but not of killing.

  • If you look my channel you will see I takes a real interest in the Irlande's history I am nurse how can I rejoice in the death of men -But there is a time where the freedom 's fighters have no other choice like us in France against the nazis during the last war

  • You take an interest in Irelands history

i take interest in Hitler and US foriegn policy -if this is/was a song about risking your life to fight those things - these guitars would sound that much more fecking amazing -

But if you want a song about modern Irish history go to "cats in the cradle - Tarrant on TV".

There were french Heroes in WW2 - but be honest it was not a game set up for heroes - it was just madness/carnage - Churchil/Stalin were in there element putting othrers in their graves

  • the strat completes this song, watchd it bout ten times now!

  • It's Declan that completes the song...

  • sound macca, they forget that Christy didnt write the song, jack warshaw did, before the hunger strikes. so it was christy and a i think band called 'the men of no property' that actually added the verse about our brave hunger strikers. i think people should adapt the verses to whatever country or struggle they are involved in. its an internationalist anthem. p.s got a bit of mcIlhatton juice down in wexford there last week.

  • Fantastic song

  • unbelievable. flawless

  • talented that the song speaks for itself. Christy played these songs when it was unfashionable to sing these songs. Him and mature republicans dont need little whipper snappers sayin that we're sell outs or dont empatise with current political prisoners. I think its unfair to suggest that. if ya wanna go and shout out peoples names go to a drunken Uh Ah up the Ra gig somewhere, theres plenty of them around. Is that showin respect for the lads? Think about it.

  • very well said larry,goodman

  • in fairness i think Christy changes the verses the odd time, depends where hes playin or what humour hes in, like he does with other songs. The spirit of the song is what is important though. When i hear it i think of all the hunger strikers but also other heroes. Real republicans & christy fans dont need everything broadcast in yer face to have our own refletion for the lads. Its like when he plays Mc Illhatton, theres no need to say heres a Bobby Sands song, the song is so good and bobby is so

  • i could do with a Mc illhatton living near me sometimes lol

  • Having seen Christy last night in Edinburgh, he did indeed play the full version of this song. I guess it depends on the crowd. And Declan Sinnott rocks.

  • it's unfortunate christy feels the need to sideline the verse on the hungerstrikers of 81

what was his reason for supporting them in 81 if he shows no respect for them now?

    has he a short memory?

by the way there are still ira political pows in portlaoise and maghaberry jail

    always remember the pows

    yesterday and today

  • christy was and still is an irish republican at heart, he stood up for the hunger strikers and other oppressed and unjustified people and parties when nobody else bar a few wouldnt dare mention it.what i mean is he did it when it mattered and just because he doesnt mention it here doesnt suggest he has forgotten what happened , sometimes when you play music you play to a particular audience, for instance if christy was playing say in portlaoise prison he is probably not going to see love songs

  • Shame Christy dosent sing the verse about the hunger strikers anymore

  • totally agree wit u....gary og does a gud version and mentions them

  • How is this different to the original?

  • what a disapointment that he doesn't mention The Hunger Strikers and everyone else in the song.

  • REM 1981

  • its a shame christy wont sing the original version i guess its not cool anymore....

  • Yeah my friend - this is the 'radio friendly' version :(

Unfortunately the original is still very relevant for some sections of the irish community (and more recently sections of the Asian community).

  • "a bit 'let the dog see the rabbit-ish'" what a great way to describe the solo...

  • What a beautiful player Declan is. I was looking at some old Hearts footage and he is so consistent in how he plays - I love guitarists who play like that - they hardly move but just make great sounds, no histrionics - Walter Becker is another one, and Jeff Pevar . . rant over.

  • not the version i know.1981 album, spirt of freedom by christy mentions hughes and mc ilwee, sadder version, but still good

  • anyone know the chords for guitar for this great song or can get them for me and post them here onb youtube. I found chords on a site called unitedireland but they dont match this version. I notice christy is using a capo too on the first fret I think. any help would be much appreciated.

  • Duckman, Don't worry about Christy's chords

google "song lyrics and chords" to find it.

  • cheers tmr111 I will give that a go

  • the chords are, without using copoes, C, F, E minor, and G and combine them to find the parts of the song. Have fun. I'm Eloy from Spain.

  • Cheers Eloy mucjh appreciated. I am Kieran from N. Ireland

  • Pleased to meet you Kieran. As I told you try to combine them in order to find the parts, if you can't, i'll give you the parts and the order. regards

  • the chords are, without using copoes, C, F, E minor, and G and combine them to find the parts of the song. Have fun. I'm Eloy from Spain.

  • i forgot A minor too, sorry.

  • Wow, the hairs on the back of my neck are tingling. What a song, thanks for the upload. Is this an extra on a dvd or something, have never seen it b4?

  • Yeah neo its an extra on the Live in Dublin DVD.

  • First time I've ever heard that song. Pretty good. Love the lyrics. This must have been adapted by the Bristol anarcho punk group The Mob in about 1983. Their version is very different, but worth a listen, if you can track it down.

  • fek it. don't need to take a listen. neither does Christy. neither does the usa. we're all good with it all. Ceart go Leor.

  • Looks like we Detroiters have the concensus.

This about sums it up why Christy is a legend! The guitar work aside, the vocals & lyrics are rivetting.

Whallup the echoes Christy and Declan! Can't wait to see ya.

    Tim - Detroit, MI

  • Anybody know wher I cud download ths..thnx appreciated

  • this one of my favorite of Christy

  • Christy moore is fantastic..gone are the days when artists believed in what they sing about.Christy is a genius

  • you have to live it to understand it rem 1916 rem 1981 tiocfaidh ar la......

  • "They came for young Francis Hughes and his cousin Thomas McElwee as well. They came for Patsy O'Hara, Bobby Sands and some of their friends. In Boston, Chicago, Saigon, Lebanon, Palestine and Belfast and the places that never make headlines the list never ends..." or..."They took away Sacco, Vanzetti, Connolly and Pearse in their time. They came for Newton and Seale, Bobby Sands and some of their friends..."

  • Without a doubt one of the greatest leftwing songs of all time. And a fabulous performance. I can't stop watching it.

  • Sounds great. I think this newer version loses something though by not mentioning specific people or places.

  • probably because it was a sound check

  • I think this is the way the sing it now.

  • wow...excellent video, great song, great jam

  • This song still makes the hairs n my arms & the back of my neck stand up. Used to go see the lads sing in The Meeting Place, Dorset St. back in the late 70's. Brilliant.
