  • Great idea, would defo do this but it would stick well out of my pockets

  • @freddiemjames Thanks my friend.

  • To maximize my space i use magnet, i havent seen enyone use these yet, but the real tiny buttong magnet i put in the top of the open tin, and i put flat things under them and put some needles taped up on the other on, it realy haelps with space.

  • @JBender1497 Nice Idea with the use of magnets.

  • I'm gonna steal this idea but replace the sharpie with a preon 1. Thanks for the vid.

  • @Slingsomelead Thanks my friend, nice idea using a Preon 1 :-)

  • I cant find an altoids tin for the life of me! Are they mainly sold in the UK? Because here in Canada... im not having luck!

  • @xXMATTanator99Xx Sorry you can't find them, I know in the USA they are readily available, quite hard to find in the UK though. Hope you manage to find them in year area.

  • @xXMATTanator99Xx Im sure you could find a tin that is relativley the same size with some other product in it, or mabey some other type of container.

Be Creative! after all the number 1 skill a " survivalist" should have is improvisation.

  • Hey Colin great video. Gave me some ideas. I dont know if you have access to a magnesium firestarter. If so you can pop the ferosium rod out with a knife. They are so small you could probably put the rod in with this existing kit and actually would last much longer than the matches if you wanted.

  • @Texasoutback Aye plenty of availability here. I will not add one though. Like I said its not a survival kit. I carry a zippo lighter in my right pocket daily

  • @ColinOutdoors Not a problem my friend. I actually made the suggestion before I heard you say you werent making changes.

  • @Texasoutback No probs my friend, hope you are having a good weekend.

  • I am quite tempted to replicate this.

  • @IzzyJG99 Nice one my friend, I am enjoying using this kit.

  • Another great video. I have a EDC type kit I only use at work (surgery) and I am working on one for the rest of the time. Looking for a flatter, nylon/canvas type of container. What was the name of the forum you credited at the beginning of this video?

Thanks always for you efforts - Ken

  • @kweotrail Thanks Ken, the forum is Multitool(dot) org forum, lots of great info there.

  • Very Cool Idea Colin, i may a version of this too, it looks much easier to carry stuff like that, if i do a video i'll definetily do a response.

    Take care.

    Mike.

  • @WeaponCollector Hi Mike, cheers my friend. Yeah its come in handy quite alot. Hope you do a vid response, would love to see it. Have a great weekend.

  • Cool little kit Colin...Dash

  • @mrriprock2 Cheers Dash,

  • Nice tight little system Colin.

    Nate

  • @CdnLifeguard71 Thanks Nate, I am pleased with it.

  • Great kit!! I'm glad to see more of your videos.

  • @TheTeaguzzler Thank you very much my friend, take care.

  • have to say this has become my favorite outdoors/reviews channel. keep it up colin, your videos never disappoint.

  • @Grunt922 Thank you so much for the kind words and support my friend, means alot to me, take care.

  • Great kit, with the needle and thread and a shined up lid it would work as a last ditch kit as well, assuming it doesnt let water in or the matches are water safe. Gives me an idea for the Booboo's kit I got for Christmas, it was labeled first aid but is better for kids scrapes and cuts. Now I think I can make it usefull ;) Thanks nice video.

  • @0623kaboom Thanks my friend, great idea about using the lid and shining it up. The matches are waterproof. Sounds like a cool kit you got for Christmas.

  • @ColinOutdoors The kit was about 4 inches by 5 inches had a dozen band-aids 2 alcohol swabs and a small fluff of gauze, a micro medical tape and a mini safety pin. Like I said a booboo's kit not anywhere near a firstaid kit. BUT your altoids EDC gave me a few ideas I can run with in it and make it actually useful ;) They gave me the kit more for the container than the contents anyway LOL

  • @0623kaboom Nice one my friend, hope you make a great kit from the container, take care.

  • great idea neat and small kit that you need and doesnt ware your pocket out.

  • @38MarcW Thanks Marc :-)

  • Hi Col, saw the LED LENSER @ Shot Show 2012 (by Nutn), thought it was neat. I've had my Altoids tin for a couple months now. Once in a while I think about doing something with it, but I can't eat all the little mints very fast. Anyway, I sure have fresh breath, which my family appreciates. Take care, my friend.

  • @sabr686 Hi Sabr, yeah they have some cool lights. The P4 pen light I have used for 6 months is pretty good. Hehe, yeah those mints aren't easy to eat quickly, just empty them into a zip loc bag lol. Cheers my friend, take care too.

  • Very cool. The only thing I would change for myself would be by adding a needle and thread.

  • @dcox01 Thanks my friend, great idea of include a needle and thread, I may just do that :-)

  • Something for the weekend, sir?

  • @MrHatManS What do you have in mind? :-)

  • i like the alox way more then the plastic on victorinoxs another great vid colin

  • @TOM47812 Thanks Tom, yeah I prefer the Alox too.

  • Great stuff friend! :D

  • @Valerieannleeh Thanks Valerie :-)

  • That's a pretty cool minimalist edc! Lot of functionnality in a nice small package!

  • @TheThiasAm Thanks my friend, I appreciate your support, take care.

  • Nice to use an object that is nor regarded as an offensive thing and to "hide" the knife. I know that it is UK legal but, some people might get their noses wet over a thing like that:o) And of course, you keep your gear in good condition and safe from everyday wear and tear. Great Idea thanks for sharing:o)

    Rob

  • @Andersbork Hi Rob, thanks my friend, yeah its a good way to carry the items I think. Take care and have a great evening :-)

  • Nice way of doing things buddy! If it works for you thats all that matters, but you are definitely preachinhg to the converted with regards to Altoids tins if you have watched even half a dozen of my vids I think they feature in about 90% of them! ha ha! All the best, great to see you back and MTFBWY!

  • @jediknightofthewoods Cheers buddy, aye the tins are very handy indeed. Not sure what the acronym is. Take care.

  • @ColinOutdoors MTFBWY = May The Force Be With You, a wish of wellness and balance with The Force from...Jedi! ;-)

  • @jediknightofthewoods Ah haha, its obvious now lol. I take it you'll be watching Episode 1 in 3D? I plan too :-)

  • Excellent! Glad to see you included a means of making a fire! I like that little leatherman!

  • @ksdj1 Thanks my friend, yeah the Squirt PS4 is a top tool

  • Thats pretty kewl mate.

  • @propcomicdoinyourmom Cheers mate :-)

  • @ColinOutdoors Haha :))

  • @propcomicdoinyourmom :-) Always appreciate you watching buddy.

  • @ColinOutdoors i always apreciate your videos mate :-)

  • @propcomicdoinyourmom Means alot to me mate, take care. :-)

  • @ColinOutdoors same to you mate.

  • Matches? Instead of a small firesteel? I would think that would limit the fire making capability? Good video though! Thanks

  • @badjujuR6 Well its not for fire, its more incase the Zippo gives out. :-)

  • cool

  • @Rorythehiker Thanks for watching. :-)

  • 127 comments. Too many comments for this little black duck. Colin if someone has already suggested it please ignore but has anyone suggested putting a couple of band aids between the cotton wool and the tin lid?

  • @351xb1973 Hi my friend, good idea with the band aids, I usually carry a couple in my wallet but I may add some to this, cheers for the top tip, take care.

  • This takes me back to one of your first vids..

  • @memphis024 Haha, yeah I like putting kits together, thanks for the support.

  • Well done Colin, I just posted a vid on my edc kit using a Maxpedition edc bag. Yours is more minimalist than min, I tend to over prepare, but I like it! Cheers buddy!

  • @SkiDoc21 Thanks my friend, I appreciate the support. Looking forward to checking your video out :-)

  • I like that set up. Nice work

  • @investigator76 Cheers buddy.

  • Nice kit Colin!!!

  • @anderman72 Thanks my friend :-)

  • another good'n Colin, I have a similar set up, but in a small belt pouch, I don't even know it's there, and it really has become edc ... love the vids as always mate

  • @oldguy537 Cheers my friend. I like your idea of using a belt pouch, something I may try in the future.

  • Probably the most expensive Altoids kit I've ever seen. A Squirt PS4 and a Vic. Farmer!!!!

     Love it!!!

  • @kessler003 Haha, thanks my friend. Yeah two great tools.

  • good video as always, colin.

  • @TheAmishking Cheers mate, I appreciate your support.

  • That's a good idea Colin.

  • @Optionsaregood Thanks my friend.

  • excellent kit - very good choices. now i am going to make one too. thanks!

  • @defenseandsafety Cheers my friend, hope you make one too.

  • hey i just caught up to your last few vids...nice work pumping out really good content..Ed

  • @sousaville Hi Ed, thanks my friend, take care.

  • nice kit my friend!

  • @1978graham Thank you Terry.

  • Thanks for reminding me about Altoids tins. Years ago I fiddled about with them and have done some tool kits and stuff but the knock on those tins was they weren't waterproof with the open hinges for survival purposes. However, as and EDC kit they make sense. I always thought it was nice of the Altoids people to give us free candy when we buy one of their tins.

  • @packofhounds Thanks my friend. Lol yeah the free mints are always nice :-) Take care.

  • great to see you back . love the vid funny thing is i just bought a tin this week just so i could do the same thing .

  • @cslr11 Thanks my friend, nice one, hope you make a cool kit.

  • Where do you keep your altoids? j/k nice kit

  • @llib90630 Haha, in ma belly :-)

  • Nice little kit.

  • @TheSurviver72 Thanks my friend.

  • Glad you are back making vids! I was getting to worry about you Mate!

  • @Diopterman Cheers man, I appreciate your support, take care.

  • That's really well thought out, Colin; A very nice fit. I love how the farmer fits..makes me want to buy one. I'm glad to see that you have scissors, they are a very handy item that many people over look. Have you tried fitting a mini Bic lighter instead of the matches?

  • @Greatbloke Thanks my friend. Yeah I find the scissors probably the most used item. The mini bic is a good idea, I would have to sacrifice something from the tin to make it fit, but I do carry a zippo in my right pocket daily.

  • i carry a bunch of stuff, but a SAK is good because it is person friendly. i can use my SAK in public, but not my SOG Aegis tanto, for obvious reasons. SAKs dont look "scary", so they are good to pare with a more "scary" knife.

  • @meuberepic Yeah I agree with you SAK philosophy. They sure are ppl friendly.

  • Colin, that Squirt PS4 is a great choice to pair with a swiss army knife. Thats a lot of tools in that container. Good job, my friend!

  • @dcordry Thanks my friend, I always appreciate your comments, take care.

  • Nice video!

A few suggestions from someone that has been carrying one around for years:

Soak the cotton balls in petroleum jelly and warp in aluminium foil. They'll still silence your carry and double as fire starters if needed.

I always keep a Fresnel lens tucked away in either my wallet or the tin. That combined with a magnetized needle (back-up compass) will dig out any splinter and the lens can be used if fire making if needed.

Understood its not meant to be a survival kit.

    Great video

  • @Talondas Great suggestions!

  • @Talondas Cheers mate, I appreciate your suggestions, not gonna soak the cotton balls in wax vaseline though, use this in other methods but not interested in it for this tin.

The lens is a good idea also. They are very hand for all sorts of things, and I like the needle suggestion too, thanks for sharing, take care.

  • I carry a squirt ps4 all the time, Love it.

  • @italymaster101 Nice one my friend, its a great tool.

  • good work mate!

  • @cainas80 Cheers mate

  • I always like to see peoples EDC-kit, thanks for sharing! Can you maye do a video on the watches you EDC?

  • @leftie4all Thanks my friend, yeah I sure can show my watches, I have 3 main ones I use.

  • What country are you in?

  • @Castleknight Alba

  • Nice kit mate!

  • @AlphaBushcraft Thanks mate.

  • That's a very neat little kit, mate! I like it. If you ever want to upgrade the light (as you mentioned it being a few years old), you could get (from the same company) a Photon Freedom Micro. It gives you fully-adjustable brightness, and other modes (strobe and SOS, I believe).

Just thought I'd mention it. Great video! Thanks for sharing - God bless.

  • @TheCrushmaster Thanks my friend. Nice tip, I will check out the Photon Freedom light, I like the sound of the adjustable brightness very much, thanks for sharing, take care.

  • Good to see ya back bro!! Was gettin worried.

  • @jbum03 Great to be back, thanks for the support my bro, take care :-)

  • nice vid

  • @Flash9590 Thanks my friend.

  • Sweet!

  • @SurvivalNewsVideo Cheers my friend.

  • Colin,

How about metal wire, fishing lure, magnifying glass....Just kidding :). Obviously very well thought out and functional kit (through trial and error) for your needs. I especially like the mini carabiner because, although it is not something one typically sees in these types of kits, I can appreciate how versatile it could be (in addition to the way you showed using it). Really cool idea.

    Take care,

    Larry

  • @inquisitivewolf Hi Larry, Haha, great idea. Yeah the mini 'biner is something I am pleased with, had one of those s-biners but could quite fit it in. Hope you make some more of your vids mate, always great fun. Take care.

  • Nice kit. I especially like the addition of the mini carabiner option.

  • @nextexhale Cheers my friend, yeah I am pleased with the 'biner, gives the kit some good versatility.

  • Excellent vid my friend!

  • @Bigntactical1 Thank you for the kind words my friend.

  • Great vid!good stuff i have the soldier and the pioneer and also squirt ps4 and p4 very good tools :)

  • Great vid collin!

  • @ailkiw Thanks buddy.

  • Very clever Colin. You have given me some ideas for my own EDC. Good job

  • @1776SonofLiberty Thanks my friend, take care.

  • Hey Colin, great add to the list of uses of altoids tins!

why don't you keep your larger stuff like your leatherman on a lanyard and yer wee bits and bobs in the tin?

    Harry

  • @gralo5 Hi Harry, cheers my friend. If I carry a larger Leatherman like a Charge its usually in a sheath on my belt.

  • Colin: perfect video i added to my faves, thanks from Canada! Steve

  • @OSCALETRAINGUY Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words my friend, take care.

  • Great video man. I love the Leatherman squirt. I use it everyday

  • @TheDiamondback45 Cheers man, yeah the Squirt is a quality tool for sure :-).

  • Great idea!

  • @n2wilderness Cheers my friend.

  • Great looking kit! But a suggestion, if this is an EDC kit you may want to include some money (wont take up any more room) incase you loose your wallet or some place doesent take credit cards for some reason.

  • @TheRATPT01 Thanks my friend. You know what, money is a top idea, I had been thinking about it, now I need to save some to put in there. Thanks for the great advice, take care.

  • Another Good Idea Colin Well done

  • @hakkamantis Thank you my friend, take care.

  • this has inspired me colin! guna make my own!

  • @LaneMaddox00 Thanks Lane, looking forward to seeing yours.

  • how many times have we all needed such items and not had them on hand? great idea colin. Have you tried the tent out?

  • @PHARRAOH Cheers Alan, great to hear from you, sent you an email last week, was worried about ya buddy. No had chance to test the tent, hopefully soon.

  • Just had a thought, I'd love to see u make videos on what to use or do if ur out in the middle of nowhere and have nothing to shelter with or cook with etc. Love ur videos and think that would be awesome.

  • @MrPhatSlim Great idea my friend, something I will need to try, will be a great learning experience for me.

  • Great video as always Colin mate, have been watching ur recent videos just the fecking iPad wouldnt let me comment :( Hope all is well buddy

  • @MrPhatSlim Thanks mate, always appreciate your support. I am doing well, how are you? Gotta love the iPad :-)

  • Blimey, that's an annoyingly good idea :)

  • @theBemusedOne Lol, thanks my friend, I appreciate you watching, take care.

  • Nice kit mate. Kind regards

  • @hikinguphigh Thanks mate

  • Well Stuffed tin Colin, really good idea the karabiner thing! Take care!!

  • @2dividedby3equals666 Cheers my friend, yeah I am glad I had one of those little karabiners, fits quite well after lots of tries :-)

  • Very clever! Thanks for the idea!

    Cheers, Duane

  • @XDM50 Hi Duane, thanks buddy, take care.

  • altoid tins are awesome.

  • @blackbat1339 I agree :-) Thanks for watching.

  • Nice kit Colin. I usually carry my tin in an old horizontal mount cell phone case. It's out of the way but instantly accessible.

  • @nchiker1971 Cheers my friend. Great idea with your cell phone mount, I like the sound of that, thank you for sharing, take care.

  • Nice little tin you got there.

  • @lewis4642011 Cheers Lewis.

  • Great job!

  • @wildwillysearchgod Thanks man :-)

  • Nice vid Collin as always....=)

    Keep up the good work...
