I guess people take this film too much seriously. It was pure spoof on War and it worked. I love this movie very much. Steven Spielberg still never disappoints me. Also it was nice to see young Nancy Allen (Philadelphia Experiment, RoboCop trilogy). She was awesome. The same with other actors - Dan Aykroyd, Ned Beatty, Tim Matheson, John Belushi, Lorraine Gary, Treat Williams, Toshiro Mifune, Wendie Jo Sperber.......
"1941" is a mess. The humor is too forced. If Spielberg wanted to do Olsen & Johnson, he sure got it, though why would anybody want to do Olsen & Johnson? Doesn't matter, because this dance number/chase scene is the most exciting musical number in the world. It just gets bigger and more surreal every second. I'd even sit through that awful "Color Purple" again just to see this scene.
@dionstap Yes, unfortunately. Wendie Jo passed from breast cancer November 29, 2005. By all accounts, she put up a brave and aggressive fight against the disease. Her last work was as a voice on American Dad. The producers re-named her character Wendi Jo in her honor. The episode aired after she passed.
@eblackadder3 You cannot find this song under that name. "Sing Sing Sing" is a more famous song, but it is a DIFFERENT song. This one is not that. I'm sorry, but you'll need to link to a THIS song to be sure. I cannot find THIS song under THAT name.
This is a much-maligned film - understandably. But this scene is terrific. Spielberg is a master of action scenes, and isn't a song and dance number a type of "action scene"?
This combination of dance/fight choreography, along with the gorgeous, dynamic camera movement, is about the best ever put on screen.
@seejaytftf I could've said the same exact thing but you beat me to it. This is actually one of my most favorite scenes in cinema....overlooked obviously because of how wildly inconsistent the movie is as a whole. You start to see visual flourishes Spielberg later reuses in subsequent films of his. You also begin to see the madcap fantasy qualities John Williams adds to his films. It was the movie that basically HAD to be made so we could get Raiders. Long live the movies!
This was a great movie, WAY ahead of it's time. Actually originally it was going to be cast as a musical, then they scrapped that and made it what we know it as today.
Tons of high power actors in the movie, each lending their own little spice to their own roles. Almost makes you think this is what would happen if a bunch of actors got together and decided to make a movie for the heck of it for fun.
@kleetus92 I totally agree. This movie is so much wacky fun that i really can't understand why so many people disliked it. It's really too bad it wasn't a critical success because i would have loved for Spielberg to have made 1942.
Understandably? The only reason it is maligned is because it didn't make as much money as Speilburgs other films. It is still an absolutely hilarious film.
There is no more exciting dance form than swing. Grace, athletic ability and fluid motion. The music is great too. I'm so sorry I wasn't born in that era.
terrible foreign dubbing. brilliant film. saw it about 89-90 on UK telly and a few times since. finally bought it on region 1 last year as not available region 2 in the UK.
O filme é ótimo e a trilha sonora também. Obrigado.

If Treat Williams would get the hell out of the way, this scene would take off into the stratosphere.
