I do not agree with religious schools of any stripe. Islamic schools however warrant a more fervent opposition than others. No it hasn't, the liberal dogma of multiculturalism was first established in 1972 by prime minister Goth Whitlam. Australia has always been a western nation and it still is, the only reason why we call ourselves 'multicultural' is to minimize offense. If Muslims wish to live with us in the west, then they are expected to integrate, and integration involves going to schools with other Australian children.
The use of the term multicultural has been in use since then, but the actual state of Australian society has always been a multicultural one.
Australia permits freedom of religion, which is why it is Muslim's, catholics and Jewish peoples' right to follow their religion and go to schools which are appropriate for them.
We are a western culture, just have a look at the beuro of statistics, 92% of the population is European. The media only says that we are multicultural because they have to be politically correct. Muslims having the right to practice their religion has nothing to do with Islamic schools. And you are wrong, I know allot about Islam, enough to say that Islam is incompatible with western society due to teachings with in the quran itself as well as some of the hadiths which comprise of shariah law.
A western culture we may be, but we have always had other cultures present in Australia. The fear of Islam is largely an irrational one, as highlighted by these protestors.
Islam and Christianity hold many things in common, but as is many peoples want, they only focus on the difference. Its all about trying to feel superior to the other. Reinforcing the white christian values as positive whilst depicting Islam as the devil. It doesn't add up.
Islam is incompatible with Christianity and all other religions. Lets review some history shall we: During the 7th century AD, the Islamic jihad conquered the middle east and north Africa and as they did, they subjugated Christians and jews as 2nd class citizens, ore as "dhimmi" people. 280 million Christians, Jews and Hindu's died during the Islamic conquests. The Arab-Israeli conquest is not about a land dispute, it is about a genuine hatred towards the Jews.
In November 2001 Swiss authority's found a document in a small town. It was titled "the Muslim brotherhood project" it detailed the 100 year plan to Islamize the west through cultural invasion and immigration. In 2005 a meeting between 24 "moderate" Islamic organizations was held in Chicago to discuss in detail of how they were going to evangelize the west through journalism, education, and politics.

I do not agree with religious schools of any stripe. Islamic schools however warrant a more fervent opposition than others. This is because Islam is the most recent of the Abrahamic faiths and deems itself as being the most perfect expression of monotheism. The inherent self-adulation intrinsic to Islam makes it's adherents very susceptible to believing that they are most superior in spiritual terms. Indeed, this is why they want to "Islamic" schools which they regard superior to all others.

am an Australian, British & EU citizen.
Having lived in both countries I can fairly say that the anglo aussies are much more racist than the anglo british.
The anglo british are more educated and civilised people and they embrace migrants more openly and do not call them wogs etc.
Whereas the anglo aussies are very rough and ignorant and always in denial about their shameful history eg. white australia policy and killing of all native tasmanian aborigines.
