interesting, you dont hear to much about these guys in the media, news, video games, or movies...how do the USMC Force recon units differ from the SEAL teams? it looks like they get the same training almost minus less focus on underwater demo? correct me if im wrong just wondering..can anyone tell me drop out rates, BUDS i heard is 70-75% bing higher in winter class. is Force recon about the same, less or more? how many weeks of training do they have as well compaired to BUDS? seems secretive

I've only heard 1 story from a Marine who was in 2nd Recon back in 71- 73 and it wasn't exactly discriptive by any means. all I got out of him was that he was doing cold weather training somewere and that he got hurt lol.

@TheJetsrdabest agreed that they are well trained and fly under the radar as far as credit for there actions, but they are not Special Forces. the marines strangely enough is the only branch of the military that do not have a any personnel that fall under the spatial forces operational command. but still these boys are the real deal, I would put them right next to any seal, PJ's, or Green Beret team in terms of quality soldiering.
@tmaduri Incorrect. Recon Marines as a whole are considered special ops. Within "Recon" you have Division Recon, FORCE Recon, and as of 2006 we now have MARSOC or Marine Special operations Command which falls under SOCOM. Any Recon marine is elite, but FORCE Recon and MARSOC marines are the elite of the elite.

No branch is any better than another. They're all around for a reason, to preform a specific duty another branch can't. Army and the USMC are similar, but the Army is much larger, therefore it is used to sustain conflict wherever that is. The unique thing about the Marine Corps is that Marines are usually the first IN any conflict due being based in regions around the world. The Marine Corps. is also the branch used if amphibious assault was ever need again.
Funny. I was a SARC for nearly 6 years. i was assigned to Force recon for a large part of that time. and oddly enough WE trained RMC's as well as israeli special forces. So for you to say that RMC's are trained better is just not true
Each Special Forces Unit also has its own purpose so you can't say one way or the other whose better. For example the main difference between SEAL's and Force Recon is the Seals have their own AT team where as Force Recon doesn't. The Marine Corps has its own Anti-Terrorism unit, CQB. I was a Marine but my opinion is that Delta is the superior SF unit, but like I said thats my OPINION. I had friends in force and I can tell you one thing every Special Forces Unit respects the others.
Every branch has its own purpose and with out one branch helping the big goal becomes alot more difficult to achieve. For example we all bag on the Airforce but I bet your ass if they didnt drop bombs and do aerial surveilance for us you'd be wishing they were. Or bagging on the Navy, when we're overseas how the fuck do you think we get our supplies to the green zone so they can send them in the combat trains with us.

This has to be corrected or you will not make it through training. It's not like boot camp where all you have to do is go through the motions and simply persevere. If the BRC officers and NCOs don't think you have what it takes mentally, they'll find a way to make you fail.
@TheEpicon When you can run a marathon in less than 5 hours and can complete a triathlon on a competitive level, AND have a high first-class PFT...I'd say you have a reasonable chance of making it through the indoc and BRC. Mentally you have to be able to function on 1 hour of sleep a night, exceptional memory skills, quick learner, and have an impeccable attitude. A Recon Marine knows how to ignore all the discomforts and stay focused at all times. -- I recommend joining the infantry first.
I don't read comments because of the fact that people piss me off. Here is the down low of it all, it doesn't matter what branch you are, or going to be, all that matters is that you do your job to the best of your abilities and push yourself to be better. It doesn't matter who is better, as long as you are the best of what you can do, and get better every day. Part of being the best is respecting those who serve next to you in ALL branches. We all have the same goal and the same orders.

im former Army and i agree that people join different branches for different reasons. you all have to keep in mind that we are all soft bodied civilians prior to enlisting and then we are completely torn down and reprogrammed and rebuilt for our specific branches and occupations. we all kick ass to have been able to complete the transformation.
Since everyone loves running their mouths about how much better a certain branch is, I'll lay it out for you guys. Marines are not necessarily the best, what separates us is our overall extreme physical fitness, discipline, the excellent rifleman training we receive from bootcamp on, and above all else; a Marine will continue to push, fight, and bleed when others would have stopped long ago, until he has nothing left to give. We think that if you aren't puking after PT you didn't push yourself.
Force Recon had to save the SEALS asses on a botched mission in Grenada about 20yrs ago, considering how long they spend behind enemy lines in very small groups, FR dont get the credit they deserve compared to other SF.
Can someone tell me the difference between SEALs and MFR they pretty much do the same thing but for some reason the SEALs get the high prized missions and are more glorified I met this MFR at a poolee function and he didnt seem all that impressed with the SEALs or care 2 talk about them same with the other Marines maybe its a branch rivalry
@EsOhomie14 All branchs have their sibling rivarly but they all respect and rely on each other, Navy for Naval assaults and landing, Army for ground assault and main base and patrol, Air Force for Air assaults and Air supority(spelt wrong), and Marines, they are the members who are mainly the Recon, they gather intel, and put down high value targets from the "Deck of 52" although each branch has their own SF, they are rolled in their own things, Marine SF is Recon, Navy SEALs are underwater sab.
@EsOhomie14 Air Force has both a ground and aerial SF ground SF is just like Army SF, your general multi purpose SF, and the aerial SF is mission that a normal pilot can't do(stealth bomb runs, longer missions then normal) each and every SF has their own strong points, I am going to do Force Recon because even tho I love serving this great country, I wanna also protect the heros I am serving beside by giving their CO's the correct info for future engagements. @EsOhomie14 They do a completely different job, SEALS do direct action and sabotage, sometimes rescue, main difference with SEALS and other SF is that they specialise in Sea entry or Air, hit then go, Force Recon were created to recon enemy landscapes and collect ground intel before the landing of the Marine forces to give them the heads up and support also they identify local targets, sometimes they take out high profile targets if ordered and can spend weeks in the field unlike the SEALS.

Recon chooses specific people for selection therefore attrition rate is not really needed, but SEALs actually demands physical and mental asset to pass training... If you guys don't know SEALs are te primary sof for the U.S.. A recon can run 10 miles but so can a SEAL but recon cannot swim 10 miles like a SEAL

force recon is not a tier asset...they have the capabilities of being a tier asset...delta is not the only tier one asset...their is also dev group which is the navy's version of the army delta force...their are other tier one assets that people dont know about...force recon is not apart of socom, does not receive socom funding which is virtually limitless... all of force recons funding comes from the marine corps...which the marine corps gets its money from the department of the navy...

Force Recon is not primary SOF, supporting SOCOM doesnt mean jack. You think a SEAL/Delta team will call MARSOC for help, no.. only if they were near by. No branch is any better than another. They're all around for a reason, to preform a specific duty another branch can't. Army and the USMC are similar, but the Army is much larger, therefore it is used to sustain conflict wherever that is. The unique thing about the Marine Corps is that Marines are usually the first IN any conflict due being based in regions around the world. The Marine Corps. is also the branch used if amphibious assault was ever need again.

Funny. I was a SARC for nearly 6 years. i was assigned to Force recon for a large part of that time. and oddly enough WE trained RMC's as well as israeli special forces. So for you to say that RMC's are trained better is just not true

SF(G) is short for Special Forces (Groups), and that covers Green Berets only.
SOF as SgtSchmitty mentioned, is short for Special Operations Forces.
And that covers all Special Operations components from US forces : Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines.
So under SOF, you'd find NSW (Seals), USASOC (SFG & 75th RGR Btn mainly), USAFSOC, MARSOC and JSOC.
This is all non classified information that any 5 years old kid can find on the internet...

Each Special Forces Unit also has its own purpose so you can't say one way or the other whose better. For example the main difference between SEAL's and Force Recon is the Seals have their own AT team where as Force Recon doesn't. The Marine Corps has its own Anti-Terrorism unit, CQB. I was a Marine but my opinion is that Delta is the superior SF unit, but like I said thats my OPINION. I had friends in force and I can tell you one thing every Special Forces Unit respects the others.

Every branch has its own purpose and with out one branch helping the big goal becomes alot more difficult to achieve. For example we all bag on the Airforce but I bet your ass if they didnt drop bombs and do aerial surveilance for us you'd be wishing they were. Or bagging on the Navy, when we're overseas how the fuck do you think we get our supplies to the green zone so they can send them in the combat trains with us.

@TheEpicon just asking that question already tells me you would never make it...four five years i have ran 6-7 miles almost every night am able to tread water for 45 min and can shoot better than most average people just for something special i have lived a hardcore life in reward to earn the title of a "recon marine" and that title will be mine in a matter of a couple months.

This has to be corrected or you will not make it through training. It's not like boot camp where all you have to do is go through the motions and simply persevere. If the BRC officers and NCOs don't think you have what it takes mentally, they'll find a way to make you fail.

@TheEpicon When you can run a marathon in less than 5 hours and can complete a triathlon on a competitive level, AND have a high first-class PFT...I'd say you have a reasonable chance of making it through the indoc and BRC. Mentally you have to be able to function on 1 hour of sleep a night, exceptional memory skills, quick learner, and have an impeccable attitude. A Recon Marine knows how to ignore all the discomforts and stay focused at all times. -- I recommend joining the infantry first.

I don't read comments because of the fact that people piss me off. Here is the down low of it all, it doesn't matter what branch you are, or going to be, all that matters is that you do your job to the best of your abilities and push yourself to be better. It doesn't matter who is better, as long as you are the best of what you can do, and get better every day. Part of being the best is respecting those who serve next to you in ALL branches. We all have the same goal and the same orders.

im former Army and i agree that people join different branches for different reasons. you all have to keep in mind that we are all soft bodied civilians prior to enlisting and then we are completely torn down and reprogrammed and rebuilt for our specific branches and occupations. we all kick ass to have been able to complete the transformation.

Since everyone loves running their mouths about how much better a certain branch is, I'll lay it out for you guys. Marines are not necessarily the best, what separates us is our overall extreme physical fitness, discipline, the excellent rifleman training we receive from bootcamp on, and above all else; a Marine will continue to push, fight, and bleed when others would have stopped long ago, until he has nothing left to give. We think that if you aren't puking after PT you didn't push yourself.

Force Recon had to save the SEALS asses on a botched mission in Grenada about 20yrs ago, considering how long they spend behind enemy lines in very small groups, FR dont get the credit they deserve compared to other SF.

Can someone tell me the difference between SEALs and MFR they pretty much do the same thing but for some reason the SEALs get the high prized missions and are more glorified I met this MFR at a poolee function and he didnt seem all that impressed with the SEALs or care 2 talk about them same with the other Marines maybe its a branch rivalry

@EsOhomie14 All branchs have their sibling rivarly but they all respect and rely on each other, Navy for Naval assaults and landing, Army for ground assault and main base and patrol, Air Force for Air assaults and Air supority(spelt wrong), and Marines, they are the members who are mainly the Recon, they gather intel, and put down high value targets from the "Deck of 52" although each branch has their own SF, they are rolled in their own things, Marine SF is Recon, Navy SEALs are underwater sab.

@EsOhomie14 Air Force has both a ground and aerial SF ground SF is just like Army SF, your general multi purpose SF, and the aerial SF is mission that a normal pilot can't do(stealth bomb runs, longer missions then normal) each and every SF has their own strong points, I am going to do Force Recon because even tho I love serving this great country, I wanna also protect the heros I am serving beside by giving their CO's the correct info for future engagements. @EsOhomie14 They do a completely different job, SEALS do direct action and sabotage, sometimes rescue, main difference with SEALS and other SF is that they specialise in Sea entry or Air, hit then go, Force Recon were created to recon enemy landscapes and collect ground intel before the landing of the Marine forces to give them the heads up and support also they identify local targets, sometimes they take out high profile targets if ordered and can spend weeks in the field unlike the SEALS.

I'm proud to call myself a Recon Marine and of the many men i served with that were under the socom banner. when in a combat situation we no longer recognize what uniform that we ware only the flags on our arms. we call each other brother and will lay down our lives for each other no matter if they are Navy, Army, Air Force, or Marine.

Recon chooses specific people for selection therefore attrition rate is not really needed, but SEALs actually demands physical and mental asset to pass training... If you guys don't know SEALs are te primary sof for the U.S.. A recon can run 10 miles but so can a SEAL but recon cannot swim 10 miles like a SEAL

People are stupid lol, Force Recon is rarely used now but used cause of the war in middle east. Recon isn't in SOCOM or JSOC, therefore not funded as much as SEALs, therefore rarely called on. SEALs mission rate is legendary with THE hardest training in US MILITARY even stated by pentagon.

In other words, they belong to the USMC and do whatever spec ops is needed for the USMC. The Corps never wanted F/R or Recon to be a part of SOCOM until they were ordered to join after Sept 11 by Don Rummy. This relatively new Marine unit in SOCOM is called MARSOC - Marine Special Operations Command.

@mswoonc they sent Delta and SEALs to africa because there primary roles are counter terrorism/insurgensy Force Recon's primary role's are Direct Action and Deep Recon and MARSOC's primary role is Direct Action Special Recon and counter insurgency. and Force Recon conducts alot of deep recon missions around the globe especially in countries that dont like us or have some sort of civil war raging on there

All you usually see in these comments are the fanboys who have never served arguing "XXX is better than, XXX" They all have different jobs and they are all tools in a commanders tool box, so to speak. force recon is not a tier asset...they have the capabilities of being a tier asset...delta is not the only tier one asset...their is also dev group which is the navy's version of the army delta force...their are other tier one assets that people dont know about...force recon is not apart of socom, does not receive socom funding which is virtually limitless... all of force recons funding comes from the marine corps...which the marine corps gets its money from the department of the navy...

Those who noted SEALs to be tier 1 don't know jack shit, many have notified SEALs to be tier 1 and just cause there is DEVGRU doesn't mean regular SEAL Teams don't pull out the hardest mission, it's just DEVGRU take on more challenging missions. Force Recon is not primary SOF, supporting SOCOM doesnt mean jack. You think a SEAL/Delta team will call MARSOC for help, no.. only if they were near by. You act like president ignores the SEAL/Delta.
