@8Plan A well known comedian (who is a friend of Morrissey). I think Morrissey took the Coronation Street sentiment and dragged it back into the real Manchester though.
The stuff morrissey made after the smiths has the same sound as the the smiths old stuff meaning marr wasn't even necessary. Morrissey is the real genius here.
@Wesapaloozaful - Morrissey after Marr is musically tinny and ineffectual & lyrically banal for the most part. He was much better in the Smiths, where Marr was half the talent. But they were you and earnest then & hungry for recognition
@grobbledonk I dont agree. I have played his solo album 'viva hate' probably as many times as the smiths 'queen is dead' or strangeways... It is musically genious, maybe not quite as snap your fingers catchy as the smiths stuff, but it is excellent.
morrissey's a bit marmite, but I think he was the right frontman for the smiths, he made them unique with the image and the lyrics etc, but for me it's all about johnny marr's guitar playing, the guy was a genius in musical terms, some of his stuff just makes me want to give up playing cos I know I could never be that good in a million months of sundays!
@ladylusciouz: Basically, it's pretty much all about a person so desperate to fall in love that she (or he if you want to make it even more interesting) would fall for the likes of a greaseball carnie (who's probably been locked up for child molesting at some point or another, seeing as how we are talking about Rusholme, Greater Manchester...).
This song makes me think of the climatics in 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning' with Albert Finney. If I recall, the big bash-in for Archie comes during a spell at the local amusement park. Just something very black and white about the whole song, cinematically speaking, of course. Puts you right there.
I want to be fourteen again, Tattoo my self with a fountain pen For a promise of a snog the last night of the fair French kissing as the kiosks shut Behind the generators with your coconut The coloured lights reflected in the Brylcream on his hair I want to be fourteen again For all the things I didn't know then. When I was funny, I was famous, I was never ignored I was a crazy girl, I had to laugh I had Ilya Kuriakin's autograph I had no idea you could wake up feeling bored (Victoria Wood 1978)
@asmithsfn1@asmithsfn1 Johnny Marr left the band before that. I've read a few different sources claiming it was result of not having a manager. Everything fell on Marr's shoulders and he didn't want it anymore. I personally dislike when people point a finger at Joyce, he was a great drummer and 10% of the royalties does seem a bit harsh, especially when he didn't find out until after the split. I view that business as being between the band and their lawyers.Fans don't need to get involved
DUDE I found my dads old records and i found the smiths the cure joy divison and everything i wass like holy shit but yeah my dads favorite band mine to :) R.I.P. DAD
Wow... this really is a truly well written song. Morrissey's lyrics provoke incredible imagery! Johnny Marr's guitar work is at the top of his game in this song. !!!!!!GOOD SONG!!!!!
This has to be one of my favourite lyrics of all time. It seems to completely evade analysis. There's no alliteration, assonance, rhyme - but it's still ineffably powerful.
One of my favorites, I got Morrissey on pandora and they throw in Smiths songs but they also try to throw in New Order or Duran Duran, I hate that shit there is no one from the 80's era that remotely similar to The Smiths or Moz.They are in a class of their own.
