Deepest my Chessie dove was about 5' for a rock the size of a baseball.I miss that dog. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the best for companionship and family!
I have a female named Brie she is my sidekick. I couldn't ask for a better dog. We play this game to and she loves it!!! She also loves the hose trick.
My dad loves chessies and I grew up with a very sweet "Nikkie" and she LOVED to fetch. My dad used to get on to me because when she was older (and a little out of shape) I would throw for her until she was about to pass out (I didn't know any better), but she literally wouldve fetched to death. Tough as nails and a very happy and loving dog. I'm so ready to have one of my own when I have the time to train one right.
My chessie loves water too I've never seen a breed so obsessed with H2O. If you spray a normal dog in the face with water they run away, mine opens his mouth and shakes his head moving towards the hose and will grab the hose running around the yard with it getting himself soaking wet. But one thing I noticed is they are not a summer breed, and during the summer he fatigues fast. During the winter its like he's immune to the cold, even when the wind chill is like 3 degrees. Great dogs!
I just had to put my Chessie down about 6 months ago, his color was Deadgrass and he was the best dog EVER. We would rub a rock on our hands and throw it in the deep part (about 6-7ft.) of the creek and Jax would swim out and dive down and bring the same rock you threw back to you. Dont ask me how, but he did it..
Chessies are wonderful.Ours is not much of a barker, unless someone tries to come in that does not have her approval before WE let them in.She loves our kids as much as we do,probably, and is quite protective of all of us.They are strong willed dogs, but prosper in a home where it is understood that you are running the show.
I hear these dogs are good protector too. I don't mean just barking type alarm dogs but the real deal. I have a Belgian Malinois import so I do like a dog with real protective qualities yet can be social. I don't think they are barkers are they? What can you tell me about them?
Chessie's are great. However they are a very dominate dog. I would not consider this breed for your first dog. You must be ready to be the pack leader at all times. This breed will test you every chance they get. Please talk with a responsable breeder about this breed before getting one.
Agreed. We got our Chessie without knowing anything about them. Fortunately, we learned fast. He was a lot more work than we had anticipated, but wow, did it pay off! He is the best dog we've ever had. He even brings in the morning papers.
Our Chesssie is very socialized. He absolutely loves children and will play with them nonstop forever! He only barks when needed. He is very kind, he did shake a new cat we had and we were told they are fine with cats they are raised with but get a new cat and.....
@Princeaboo I had two that would throw the farm cats up in the air and they would land on their feet. The cat would lay there and let them pick it up. Guess it was a game.
@sunshine00301 That would be a good video to watch. Our Chessie licks our cats, he loves them. We have another new one and she is way to scared of our dogs to even go out. Maybe someday they will become friends,
aw, reminds me when i threw my chessie's disc into the water, and it went under... deep... he wouldn't give up looking/diving! for it! :) and if i threw a rock, he'd find the one i threw and bring it back!! they do love the water!!!!

I have one His name is Hunter no he is not a hunter that is was supposed to be! just a big dum house dog 8 years old $700 mistake with alot of attitude about him!
who the fuck are you to tell me about my self or my dog? I have had him since he was 7 weaks now he is 8 years! I know my dog you dont know me or my dog I know he doesnt hunt or retreive. like i said he is stupid but he is my buddy so piss off!
I have ahd labs goldens and chessies. Chessies are very strong headed but this is a plus if trained right. Chessie will out work and out perform any golden or lab if they are trained right. I have hunted waterfowl hard for 20 years And Chessies will hunt no matter how bitter cold it is. sure there are poor dogs in every breed but it's poor training or lack of that makes a dog poor. Oh by the way I gave 250 for my last chessie and He Hunts!
LOL thank that make me fell so much better! $450 latter ohwell like I said he is my dog and thats what I got but all the reasons you stated are why I got a chessie I didnt go into it blind but i did with the breader i will never use her again! where do you live? I am in Delaware
Iowa. Sorry about your luck. I hope you didn't form a low opinion of the Chessie. They really are a great dog. Mine is great with my daughters and my wife as well as a great hunter.I really had to work a lot harder with him then my labs or goldens but it really paid off. He has totally out performed them and they were good dogs. Would buy another in a heartbeat!
I know they are the best water dog that is why i whent with one and he does good with the family he can be surrly at times though and I grew up on the delmarva penninsula that is why i whanted one here we have brutuly cold winter with verry strong tidal currents that is why you go with a chessie so i did i will again but not same breader she did several things i didnt like but I didnt know any better she told me thats how its done so I said ok & whent along with it

Totally agree, we had some tough moments, but lay down the law and they will obey forever! You have to have training skill when owning a Chessie

Good point. I'd suggest a Lab or Golden first. Chessie's are great dogs.
