I want to start doing molding, I know little about it other than what I've learnt on Youtube. What I want to know is can silicone casting be done from silicone molds with a release agent? Or can a rubber casting be made from a silicone mold and then a resin mold made from that to then cast back in silicone?
@TheMargaretK3 Yes, they are reusable. You will start to see pieces of your mold fall apart or stick to your part when it starts breaking down. Depends on what urethane you are using too. We had this very small mold of a mini pumpkin and it broke down after about 50 uses.
What Resin do you suggest for Small parts. like little bitty parts..ive been casting toys (like, the entire toy.. joints everything) ive been using Smooth-Cast 325, ive heard 320 is best.. i used task 4 for a while, but all the white settled in the resin part of it and i guess its ruined.. ive tried mixing it back up but it dont work very well..
@efxfreak awesome! thanks for the help :D also one more thing though, is it true that Task and Smooth-cast can cause cancer? crap i dont even wear gloves when using it! lol.. oh lordy.. what can i do to keep from getting the cancer!? i dont like cancer very much... ive never SMELT smooth-cast... i guess i should quit huffing it though huh?
@Toyman1982 I can say that it is the best and safest materials on the market, so make sure you ALWAYS use the proper safety precautions! Wear GLOVES and RESPIRATORS! :) Always take care of yourself and others around you. Unscented urethane's are always a great thing! Thanks for asking, better to ask than not know. Another thing, read the MSDS that come with Smooth-on products, it will tell you everything about the product and what to avoid.
@Toyman1982 Awesome! man thanks for the comment and glad you like the technique! We seem to come up with some interesting ones at times. Another way is to tie a few strands of thread across your mold and lay your pipe-core on top, but I like the other way better. Thanks again!
would PVC pipe works too instead of the steel bar? just a little question in mind~~ and i would like to see the other ways of position the bar in the mold too, and thx for the videos, i like it much ;)
@reyzartsist Depends on what your using the prop for - if it's a prop weapon then it may be a bit too fragile. If it's going to be used as structurally sound then it should work just fine.
I'm on "less than a shoe-string" budget, so I hate waste! I would LOVE to see a video showing the different methods used to determine how much material to pour into a mold.
@CptnDavid I must of missed this one. We plan to make that video hopefully pretty soon. For smaller objects you can take a medium size pot, fill it with water to the very top, almost to the point of spilling over. First set that medium pot into a larger one or five gallon bucket. Then when you drop your part into the water, whatever spills over is the volume you need. Or Length X Width X Height = Volume. More in the video :)
@efxfreak Awesome. Thank you. I am making a 1:5 scale model of the Soviet Lunar Module designed in 1968. This will be donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. As a "donation" it is being made on a "less than shoestring" budget. So every drop counts!
Something I can't seem to get right at all is making dentures. I can get the cast of the teeth, then I just draw a blank. Think you guys could make a video talking about dentures/fangs/ect.?
@givenupsasuke Thanks man! Absolutely, that would make for a great tutorial! We will definitely make this tutorial in the near future. It will most likely be a three to four part video, there's allot involved. I love making dentures.
@GOPHERGAMESchris Props are used when a real object cannot be used due to danger towards an actor or double. For example in a shot where someone hits a person with a tire iron you would use a prop replacement.
What can those pices be useed for in a movie?

Are the molds reusable? Or do you have to make a new mold every time?

Please do the tutorial on the math to figure out the amount of materials to mix because this stuff is expensive.

@Toyman1982 Yeah I feel that 325 would be best for your application as well. It's best for small parts.
