Hi Dale, really enjoyed your video, can I be cheeky and ask what is the make of the fleece coat you are wearing and where did you get it please. Thanks in advance.
Any chance of a video showing an elder on willow set working with close up of the ember formation from the start. Also an explanation of board thickness, any comment on importance of sideways movement of the drill when it spins. I have got this once and - am dammed if I can get it again. So frustrating!!!!
@andyroid99 Hi Andy, sorry for the delay in replying to your other messages, been very busy, it's that time of year when the courses kick off. I don't have time to make a vid yet, but will say that willow as a hearth for the handrill is fickle... in one spot it'll work brilliantly, then even the same notch will just stop working, also if you carve a new one right next to it there's no certainty it'll work. Make sure the board is no thicker than your finger, dont want the meber falling too far
Hi Dale, Another excellent video. How do you manage maintaining friction on the drill. I find that the drill and my hands drys out just when i need to go harder and thus my hands slip alot. Any tips for me mate. cheers in advance
@andyroid99 Hi Andy... a bit of sticky douglas fir resin can do wonders.. but can also cause blisters really quickly. A good scrub in clean water helps too, I often use bracken to scrub them with. Also things like elder leaves, and bluebell leaves can give some adhesion... but they are toxic so be careful. You'll find the weather conditions change how your grip is affected... also how often you do it helps.. the more often the better your grip gets.
Well, I hope I get halfway as good as you on the floating technique - your primary hand drill video was the thing that got me started on hand drill, because before learning about the existence of the floating technique from you, I considered hand drill rather impractical due to the shortage of straight long enough drill sticks for the classical technique and to make a drill composed of a drill bit from convenient wood attached to a straight stick of whatever is too time and nerve expensive.
Hmm, I'm just thinking about how to apply this to where I live in Canada. Here, it would be easier to keep things dry because the cold temperature keeps the snow dry and powdery. Conversely, powdery snow falls onto everything because it doesn't stick in place, as well as not packing down to keep off of kit. The colder temperatures also make getting an ember tougher. Do you have suggestions for other spindle materials? Burdock here only grows in disturbed regions, not in prime bushcraft areas.
Excellent video. That was a good bit of bushcraft. I'm still working on this skill here in Brazil. I have gone into the jungle and made a bow drill coal but hadn't collected the tinder to make it into flame that time. You really don't own this skill until you can make it work under adverse field conditions like you did here. Good stuff.
The only problem with watching your videos is that about half way through I always go grab my hand drill set and practice and end up forgetting to finish watching. Great motivation!
Burdock. Burdock! That is a new material for me. I am really glad that you shared this with us. Anyone else and I would have bet against it. We have lots of Burdock around these parts and it is on my list for my next outing. Merry Christmas you friction fire genius you!
was the hearth goat willow? if so this can also be used as your spindle in a bow drill method, i.e the same wood can be used for all the set. spindle, firebard etc
thanks great video

Good job as alw. I made my first fire piston last night and got an ember an hour after I had started. Fire options are great skills...
