Ok started building mine :-) It looks from this video that its hard to control the volume input to guarantee 2V or under. Is there a good way to control this a little better so as not to blow up ic chips all the time.
The IC chips should never be damaged, even with higher audio input levels of 2V. With higher input levels, you'll just be clipping the audio resulting in bad sound quality, not damaging anything.
Just use a AC powered CD player and you'll be fine.
