can i use a bly-ray laser diode from dvd bly-ray burner and make this or something similar them???? How much power have a laser from bly-ray dvd burner????
To all the people here who say it cant burn your skin....
The wavelength of this vilolet light is around 405nm-450nm (around this area) Which means even a low power beam can get alot of energy into a spot were lets say a infrared laser wavelength is 808nm and has a very hard time burning your skin let alone paper cause it get energy to a point very slowly in comparison. Thats why all those red laser videos you guys are seeing arnt burning people... Yay for physics!
I bought a blue laser diode that is supposedly rated at 150mW output power. I figured this would be more than enough to burn stuff. However, I have measured up to 300 mA of current being supplied to the diode and it has yet to even burn a hole through electrical tape. Can you upload a schematic of your circuit?
Yes if you re-focus the beam with an additional lens (from experience). This setup will pop (non-blackened) balloons in less than a second and cut lines in black plastic. ps. I just killed a clothes moth with mine !
Why didn't you use these "laser drivers" or can this be done without a driver? What happens if you just plug the diodes positive and negative pins to the battery's pins?
For this one I used a bulky homemade laser diode driver. You must have a driver to run these things because the drivers give the diode the right amount of current. Hooking a bare diode up to a battery will kill the laser diode almost instantly because the battery unloads all of its power into the diode, which causes the diode to fry.
yeah thanks. That helped a lot :) I already ordered a blue-ray diode and e driver for that earlier this day. I think it's easier to order lasers in pieces because of the customs :D (already lost one pointer for them few weeks ago) :)
2AAs directly would fry the diode, and it wouldn't even turn on. The diode needs 5v-6v for itself and you MUST regulate the current going into the diode or the diode will fry.
And I have burned myself with 250mw of red, though it is much easier to get burned by this.
The reason the medical laser did not burn is because it was not focused to a small point.
You can see how this works be focusing the sun with a magnifying glass, it will only burn things when the light is focused to as small a point as possible.
Depends... They make 532nm lasers a lot more powerful than 405nm lasers. But at the same power, violets will burn colored things but not black things well, while greens will burn black but not color well. So, if you're comparing violet + colored objects vs. green + black objects, they're about the same. Personally, I'd recomend violet because people won't be as impressed if you're popping a balloon with a black spot on it. =P
Any class of matter that gives of violet radiation (purple colour) has higher energy then radiation from red to indigo. This is why Ultra Violet Radiation is on the right side of the visable light spectrum - not in the visable light spectrum (can't be seen)
I used a laser diode from an HD DVD player that was found to have freak diodes that can be pushed to over 100mW. There is a bunch of info on these in the link in the description.
cool clip thanks for sharing ..

Is there anyway to buy one of these (URL)? Maybe this or ATLEAST (but most perferably) a blue burning (120+) laser diode?

he made this, and just buy a 4x sled, it should give you 150mW @ the right ampage

could that burn your hands

lol no.... Not even 450-500 mW would burn your hands
XenTheKiller 3 years ago
This laser easily burns my skin.
styropyro 3 years ago
In healthcare they use 450mw lasers -.- and that doesnt burn the skin
XenTheKiller 3 years ago
Must be NIR/short IR then. NIR light just gets distributed through the flesh, 2000mW of NIR won't burn unless it is focused really small.
styropyro 3 years ago
Okay.... What is Short IR then ???
XenTheKiller 3 years ago
It's violet, almost ultraviolet.
And I have burned myself with 250mw of red, though it is much easier to get burned by this.

500mw would give you bad burns on the skin
