To answer your question about "How I would have Batman's voice in Chris Nolan's realistic world..." I'd have it sound exactly as it did in BB. Perfect.
Firstly, nice Bruce Wayne hairstyle lol. Secondly, when he gets to Maroni, he NEEDS to get the info because Joker named Rachel next and he needs to stop him and so Wayne's irrational side overshadows Batman's cool approach and so he charges in just to get Maroni ASAP. Finally, I agree 100% on the voice thing, the Batman is a whole new persona, plus a person's voice is as unique as a fingerprint and Wayne speaks publicly and so EASILY he would've been caught out. Also, it's intimidation etc.
I thought there was a scene in Batman begins that explained his voice (it was one of the scenes where he was assembling his suit). There was a brief shot of his putting a device into the nose part of the mask (and so I assumed that was what transformed his voice). I could be wrong though :P
I just remembered something about your first criticism. When Batman and gordon talk in the bank vault, gordon shows him a CCTV shot of Joker and he says something like "hes not worried about showing his face"...so if anyone did see the joker at the start, who cares because they cant stop him
actually, if you watch the opening scene, you can see that the people are pretty far away from the joker, most of them are across the street. so the joker probably came out of the building for a minute, waited and then got picked up. its conceivable that no one could've noticed him.
@494ta Actually yes, that did occur to me. And that is conceivable. My complaint was under the impression that he had been waiting there for a while. If it were just for a minute, Joker could've gotten away with that I'm sure.
the only thing that I didn't like is that when batman throws joker off the building, he catches him right away. I wish that the joker fell to his death like in the original batman movie.
I don't care how many people hate on it; I am absolutely pleased with Batman's voice.
I think my only problem with the film was that the actual killings of Two-Face and Joker occur offscreen. I would've preferred to see them happen onscreen in quick shots. I'm not saying prolonged shots of graphic gore; I just think that seeing the actual killing would've made it all the more intense. But that's just me. It's still my favorite superhero film of all.
I liked Batman Begins more than The Dark Knight. TDK was a good blockbuster, and Ledger was exceptional, but the story, the dialogue, the Batman Voice were all better in Begins. Ledger's meme-like awesomeness can't make the film 'teh best ever' on its own.
WOW somebody FINALLY gets the voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU> ppl need to realize hearing that voice WATCHING a movie, being 'entertained' in a world where superheroes are comic entertainment (our world -real life) Is ONE Thing but what if you were in the 'world of Gotham/the movie' where 'superheroes' did NOT exist and Batman was a fear not a franchise and you're are out in the chilling unwelcoming gritty Gotham night and you hear that voice? Like S.L said you'd be sh!ttin your pants! THINK!
I agree with everything you said in this video. Silverlightsaber, you know your shit, and my hat goes off to you.
I agree with your minor nitpicks, they mirror my exact thoughts as I watched it for the first time back in 2008. The main issue with TDK I have, however, is Two Face's design was really off putting for me. He didn't look like a realistic burn victim to me. I felt it clashed with the realism Nolan was trying to set for his Batman movies.
Even if he may have needed to disguise his voice, he still needed to tone it down a notch. He sounded like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, but he's an 80 year old man who's smoked for most of his life. But we're talking about a comic book hero wearing a bat suit fighting crime. I think realism is kind of out of the question. I mean look at Superman and Clark Kent. It's never addressed how people don't easily put the two together considering his only disguise is a pair of glasses.
For me, the nightclub scene worked, if only because Batman's done a couple scenes like that in the various animated adaptations. Almost seems like a kind of black sheep staple of the story. So for me, that's what it reminded of--Batman's ability to get to people in the last places they'd be thinking of him.
Beginning scene, I didn't consider that, but I'll have to agree with you there. As for the voice, while I don't hate on it, I gotta say I prefer Conroy's approach of making the voice sound
authoritative, scary, and distinct from Wayne's, while still sounding like a (really, really authoritative, scary, and distinct) man. Other than that, I'm kind of surprised you didn't at least touch on the end; more than a few people (myself included) raised their eyebrows at Batman pretty much killing Two-Face without so much as an acknowledgment of his "one rule," and I'm curious what your take on that is. Anyway, love watching/listening to these; keep it up!
I agree with you about Christian Bale's voice. People do not realize that Kevin Conroy used two different voices to portray Bruce Wayne and Batman in the animated series as well. Batman fans should just stop hating on the voice.
Look at this way,The scene in the night club demonstrates it's his city and he isn't afriad to go into Maroni's domain guarded or not.He basically walks through his chess pieces and takes him by the throat. And for him to wait and hide is stupid because it goes against why villians fear him.He is wreckless when he is tipped over the edge.Read the comics!
The voice is ok.A little exaggerated but understand why it's there.I prefer Batman Begins to Dark Knight though.Just a matter of opinion
He's standing there with his make up on, and his fellow heist-ers pick him up. They then all have a conversation about "why's he called the joker? "War paint..." Etc.
I agree with you about the joker introduction at the start but after all that's the magic of cinema, letting impossible and stupid things look possible and cool. For example just the idea of a man dressed as a bat that roams the city and is taken seriously by the citizens is already ridiculous.
The nightclub scene was awesome. Well shot fight choreography, and it's not like Batman doing the Macarena in the club. He literally dived inside, beat down all the bouncers and bodygaurds and drags Maroni outside. He probably wasn't in the club for more than a minute.
Batman used to bash partys in the comics as well. And remember (as I think You stated anyway) Batman was pissed! He didnt have time to wait for Maroni to go out of the club.
direction or directing? your voice point is spot on but your joker problem isnt because in the btmanworld a guy with scars andclowns makeup ist normal
I personally think his voice changes in the movie because his mask or w.e covers his neck so it must effect his voice. (like when you put a rope around your neck your voice changes doesn't it? so i am guessing the same thing works with the costume. thats my opinion
As much as I like Bale as Batman, the voice is just plain terrible. So bad it makes me laugh a bit in certain serious scenes. My wife and kids feel the same way. All he has to really do is lower his voice a bit and no one will recognize him. The combination of mask and slightly altered voice would suffice. Val Kilmer did it best. Hopefully Bale will change it a tad in the next flick.
@andympants Yeah. Everybodty talk how realistic Dark Knight was. Actually it wasnt. It was very, very comic book like. It just was just shot in a serious tone.
Love this video man. Completely agree with every point. People don't seem to get the reason why Bale uses the voice. It's not just to do with hiding his identity, there are psychological reasons behind it. Bruce Wayne has taken on another persona. The voice represents a different part of his psychology. I love the way Bale made it sound as if Bruce was posessed when he put on the suit. No matter what anyone says, Christian Bale is the best Batman ever. (Maybe co-sharing that title with Conroy)
The batman voice in the dark knight is actually very will done, when judging the voice the Bale used you must keep in mind that this movie series by Nolan is much darker from the others, everything gets dark-character,setting,and even the voices. I like the voice of Kevin Conroy from the animated series, but something like that would not fit in this darker setting.
Now that you mentioned it, I do think it's kinda weird how Joker doesn't have his mask on in the beginning of The Dark Knight, just standing on the sidewalk. It's like, "SOMEBODY FREAKIN' NOTICE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!" I mean, are people just stairing at the ground the whole time or something??? Without his mask on, I'm pretty sure someone is bound to notice him.
@nerdsman567 But how many random passerby will actually DO anything about that these days? The vast majority of people will not even bother because the guy already looks like trouble, and standing on a street corner awaiting a ride is no crime.
Hey silverlightsaber, I totally agree with you bout Batman's voice, he can't just be a man in a suit (like Val Kilmer and George Clooney were, in the first (proper Batman movie) Batman film the suit did the talking, (least that's my opinion) ). His voice needs to make him sound more than just a human (the suit makes him look more than just a human), he can't just be a ninja reject with a terrifying looking suit and an ordinary voice. I'LL FINISH MY COMMENT IN NEXT COMMENT.
Ill tell you another problem: Gordon coming back to life! I was like "What the fuck? This is alternate ending? This is ridiculous!" This is my problem!
@NewSuperAvenger gordon did not come back to life they planned it,when he go shot he pretended to be shot then when he was moved and hid from the public so he could catch the joker
@NewSuperAvenger dude he never died. he was wearing a vest. i understand that when he came back that movie had to continue, but think for a second.....Gordon was needed a lot in the film, so he had to be alive. its for the suspense too.
I do not like The dark knight very much. It was too complex, too much all over the place and confusing. Makes no sense from time to time. I also guess i got disapointed cause everyone was saying it was so good. The good things were the action, the gadgets and the Joker. Other than that, its not that great. Begins is better for sure.
his voice didnt bother me at some scenes...only when hes yelling its kinda humorous. But the interrogation scene (before he REALLY loses it), his grave whisper is just PERFECT!
Not that Bale's voice bothered me that much but why would Batman need to disguise his voice? When he's Bruce, he talks to other millionaires and the people he works with. When he's Batman, he talks to the criminals and Jim Gordon and so on. For each identity, he's around totally different groups of people, they wouldn't go "Man, that freak in the mask sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne when he talks."
Yes, but it's important to keep in mind that Bruce is a strong public figure. Everyone knows Bruce Wayne and would easily recognize him (even by his voice). His smug rich persona has a recognizable voice and needs to be disguised.
Some people say that Kevin Conroy should've dubbed Batman's voice in both Chris Nolan films...Kevin Conroy himself even said that somebody from behind the scenes should've told Christin Bale ["You sound ridiculous. But nobody did."]
Personally I think the Chris Nolan Batman should've sounded like the serial killer from Scream 1, 2 & 3.
@JimmyBond00912 Bruce Greenwood's Batman voice in the new "Red Hood" animated movie sounds very close to the Scream serial killer's voice. Not that that's a bad thing...
@silverlightsaber True, but I think there could be a better way to disguise his voice, I think a voice kind of like Solid Snake's (the main character of the video game series, Metal Gear Solid) would fit Batman better.
@GuitaristDog87 when bruce is batman he leaves all of bruce behind. he becomes a symbol the darkness of the costume how he moves and hides in the shadows and his voice are all apart of the symbol of batman. i think it would be less powerful if he was talking to a criminal in his normal voice.
@footballward I already said in a comment that I took back what I said. Yes, Bruce should disguise his voice when he's Batman. I personally just didn't like Bale's disguised voice as Batman. I think something like Solid Snake's voice or Clint Eastwood's grim whisper voice like in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" would be a better disguised voice for Batman.
i agree for the most part but i litterally grew up with the michel keeton so ill have to say that his voice was better i found it more intemedating the bale voice was just funny sorry thats just my opinion
voice was hilarious but i felt it didn't take you out of the movie as badly as everyone is making it there is always room for improvement but they still did an exceptional job, on a second note what was the song you used for the beginning of the video or rather what version of "Dark knight main theme"?
I like the voice too. It does sound ridicolous when he said "where are they?" and "this city just shows you that people are ready to believe in good".
@TyComedian yeah i agree. and one time i watched the movie with subtitles, and batman was saying different things then i heard, like "Im not wearing hockey pads." when i though he said "im not wearing hockey pants." so that's my problem......sometimes i couldn't understand him, and when i could it wasn't very clear. but overall i DO like the voice, and it stays true to the character..........dark and scary and mysterious.
I disagree a bit, in the bank job the Joker is not posing as himself, the guys in the van don't even know it's him while they're talking about the split; safe to say he wasn't in full joker make up, in another scene we see him in a cop uniform without makeup; in the bank job he's posing as a hired thug just like the others.
As to the voice, yeah, if you read Knightfall by Dennis O'Neil, Batman does'nt have a voice, he has a rasp.
"This city... just showed you... that it's full of people... ready to believe in good."
Watch Batman deliver that line. Is it menacing, or comical? Should Joker be frightened, or ask if Batman needs a glass of water?
I've long maintained that Bale should take a few voice lessons from Kevin Conroy (who had very distinct voices for Bruce Wayne and Batman). But yeah; great movie. Minor nitpicks don't change that.
Oh, God. Bale's batman voice was just embarrassingly bad. Of course, batsy changes his voice when in costume, everyone knows that. It just sounds god awful and makes you cringe or laugh. It's the reason people hate it and amazing that Nolan didn't make him do a different voice. I still can't believe he actually let him do that silly voice. Keaton and Conroy's voice were actually threatening and badass.
@HolySasquatchTurd What makes you think that it wasn't on purpose? In this series, Batman is still growing into the hero he will become. The events in The Dark Knight just represent his first severe test. I personally think we will see him modify his Batman voice in the next film.
i think bale is great as batman i would only change the voice make it more like conroy's in the animated series a little bartone when he is in the suit
I don't really have too much of issue with it, but one thing I've always wondered, and I haven't seen anyone mention yet, if he does it to disguise his voice, why does he still use his "batman" voice when talking to Fox? Fox already knows who he is, he gave him the batman suit lol
I think batmans voice was always going to be a problem, so many different cultures have different opinions and are bound to have problems.
xuereko is the only other peson I've seen think about batman having some sort of voice muffling chip, that way it would fit in with almost any given voice aswell as easier language translation (as long as the voice chip is explained)
I agree, I find nothing wrong with The Batman voice. For those complaining about gravelly, certainly he got gravelly near the end, but remember he had been stabbed severely AND had to emote to communicate with the psychotic Dent.
My only complaints are that Batman did not look particularly vicious or secretive while beating up Lau's guards in the Hong Kong building, the movie jumped around a little too much (would have appreciated a longer courtroom scene) and that Harvey Dent died.
the only problem i have with this movie is that they never explained when Harvey and Rachel got kidnapped. its like in the interrogation scene (brilliant scene by the way) batman asks the joker, "wheres Dent?" and i was like, when did that happen? granted it took me the 4th viewing to notice but its something that just bugs me. other than that, no problems what so ever.
Yes they did... they just didn't spell it out for the audience. Detective Anna Ramirez looks with concern at the car that Harvey Dent gets in after the police apprehend The Joker... and you know something's up.
With all his toys, it wouldn't have been unbelievable for him to have a voice changer under the cowl. . . changing the voice to make it sound bad ass rather than unintelligible.
Personally I believe that Nolan's take on Batman's voice is very cool. It brings a very animalistic quality to Batman that we (as viewers) haven't really seen on film.
The voice was awesome until his last scene with Joker. The scene in the bank with Gordon was nice, and especially the interrogation room with Joker. Hell, I loved it when he was talking to Lucious about the cell phone/spying deal, it was PERFECT there. But yeah man, I agree!
I know that heath ledger is a ood joker but his voice does not match joker or hes laugh a quiet he ho ho he ha except when he fell off the building but the best joker voice and laugh is the original joker from the cartoon i just wish that i knew his name also I LOVE IRON-MAN MOVIE AND I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE 2ND AND THIRD
He seemed more like a wraith... a silent ninja with a costume in Begins... he talks too much and he is too much in the open in TDK... which I don´t really like that much... tho its ok..
Batman is supposed to induce FEAR into his enemies, his suppoed to be invisible almost.. silent.. like a ninja.. :))
However, I don´t like Batman´s voice in TDK compared to Batman Begins.... His voice was really fitting in Batman Begins... in TDK it has changed rather much it seems... a little too raspy.. forced.. and inaudible at times.. which is a shame.. they should have used the same voice from begins for continuiety..
Also.. Batman was ALOT more dark and mysterious in Begins... there was even BATS.. which makes him BATMAN.. of course.. and even the Batcave stuff made
We understand that Batman has to have a "different" voice from Bruce, but it is a matter of opinion of what qualifies as a good Batman voice. I personally do not like Bale's Batman voice. It is too gruff and raspy for my liking. Not only that, but there is a hint of lisp at times. I do not know if I fault Bale on this. I think maybe he was directed into using it that way.
ive been a long time batman fan, i found quite a bit of problems wiht the dark knight, i still really enjoyed it, but when i take into thoughts of batman and every aspect that has to do with batman or creates him and/or his story and background, i found the movie had some flaws, but sitll enjoyable nonetheless
the problem is not that he changes his voice but that the voice is so put on that it sounds comedical... it's no good having a serious scene then laughing at batmans voice...which happened with everyone i know that has seen it.
I agree with what you said about Batman's voice in Nolan's films. Besides, if you were Batman, for example, and you were interrogating me and you were talking in a normal voice instead of the low growling voice, I'd immediately recognize you. You know what I mean?
Mostly, Batman fan posers hate not only the voice of Batman but the actor, Bale, and then they all ask: "Who is the guy with the corn (Scarecrow)?" You should make a video about that. I hate the fan posers.
1) Nobody was looking because everybody was in cars and it WAS Gotham, this is like New York. People have too many things to do. And I guess people should have honked for fun. It was realistic. I mean, what exactly would you do if you saw these guys?
2) About the Sal Maroni fight, it's realistic to have him right in such a random place. Not everything should be outside like Begins and Nolan was trying to get in the blue for the screen with the lights.
About his voice.... We all know Nolan sees everything in the media, comics, etc in a differrent way than everybody (fans) here. When he read some Batman comics for Begins, he imagined Bruce/Batman's voice as being slow and depressing... So do I. Even though it wasn't meant to be like that, that voice is Bale's. It's right on. I like it.
I understand people making comments on the voice, but lets look at nolans standpoint from this movie. MAKE IT AS BELIEVEABLE AS POSSIBLE. So we have him having to use a different voice to cover his own. And at the end where the joker had that bar over his throat that's why he's using more of a guttural growl. Watch it again and see how that scene goes at the end. The armor doesnt stop the crushing power of that bar on his neck. Very good acting on bales part!
haha, Good point! Does NO ONE notice that Superman is Clark Kent without glasses on!? I mean really, does he NEVER remove his glasses EVER ANYWHERE as Clark!?
Gotham is filled with psycos, so must citizens would just try to completly avoid the joker if they saw him, so the beginning makes sence. I also thought the voice was great.
hey about the problem with the joker being out there in the open.. u gotta remember he's in the city and ppl in the city just dont really care much about freaks or other crazy things. they just keep their head down and keep walking. plus he might have been hiding somewhere before and when they picked him up he came out for that moment only. plus i love the batman voice too.. peace out bro
the biggest problem i had was after all that moralising bruce (theres a reason why i say bruce instead of batman) killed twoface. now wasnt the joker trying to get one of them to break their rules by killing somebody? (you see him killing dogs as well) it just felt out of sync with what the ENTIRE MOVIE was trying to say about morality in society, and on the Batman character in general.
its nolans masterpiece, and i love it, but as far as it being the definitive batman movie, the dark knight was not that. the definite batman MOVIE has not yet been made, nor will it ever be made.
It really isn't. Batman shouldn't have a super raspy voice. He doesn't in Begins, and never has in the animated series. Batman: The Animated Series is the one for the win.
I thought the movie was perfect, and I hate batman movies, the show, etc. I went to the movie just because I was with my friends, didn't expect to be blown away...1000/10 :)
I totally agree with silverlightsaber on the thing of how Batman was much more darker and mysterious in Batman Begins, I love that! Hes too public in TDK. But both movies are awesome, the voice isnt bad, but in some scenes it annoyed me.
@CoLiNFaHy2k9 It will be interesting how Batman's fugitive status affects his behavior and speech in the third film. Might be fun to see Bruce try a slightly different Batman voice... y'know, improve it? Maybe they were going for just a touch of imperfection in his voice in The Dark Knight...
Yeah I also agree.. his voice is awesome. A couple of my friends dont agree and they always say "he should have made his voice like it was in Batman Begins" lol i do NOT see a difference.. probably like many of you but according to them his voice is way more raspy in The Dark Knight. You made a very good point about the Marlon Brando voice and i love his voice as well but sometimes its a little bit hard to understand him.. well at least for me lol
I totally agree with you on Batman's voice; in my mind it's exactly how Batman should speak, cos like you say he has to mask his Bruce Wayne persona.
I think you're nitpicking a bit too much on your other points though. A year has passed since Batman Begins and in that time he's grown beyond hiding, the nightclub shows his audacity to get a villain whenever he wants, nowhere is safe.
And the Joker thing I dunno. I get where you're coming from but in a busy city most people wouldn't bat an eye.
I agree with what you say about Batman's voice completely. I think the opening scene is one of my favourites but what bugs me (and I understand they don't want you to know it's the Joker right away) is that you can see his hair is brown and under his mask there is no black around his eyes but suddenly when he takes it off he has his war paint on and green hair!
Thank God someone with the same opinion about the Batman voice I do I loved the voice more in begins but I can understand it changing in tdk because he's still beginning. (No pun intended) about the Joker scene @ the beginning of the movie I never thought about it but your right lol. The nightclub scene I feel make sense I do agree that the idea you came up with would've been good yet I still love the way it was in the movie because @ the same time he's still grieving over the loss of Rachael.
the voice needs to be a happy medium between Batman Begins and DK. It's underdeveloped in Begins and just a tad too gravely in DK. I love his voice in Begins when he says "Swear to me !!!"
i really like Batmans voice in TDK and BB, because its like a deep, scary, gravley tone, and it gives me chills, if he did that to me and talked to me, i wouldn't crap my pants, i'd either faint or scream like a girl, i'm dead serious.
Yeah I totally agree with you mate. You give great Reviews. One of the only bits that kinda annoyed me with the movie was towards the end, when Batman was in that underground Bunker room with only Lucius Fox. And even though Lucius Fox knew who batman really is, Batman was still using the Dark Knights voice. Im thinking to myself... why? any explanations? maybe he is just getting too pumped up for some ass kicking? lol
but I kind of thought it was cool, that he dosen't want to wait for Maroni to get out, so he just walks straight in and kick the ass of people who is dumb enough to get in his way:p
But yeah, I really agree with you on the voice! Good video!
But about the jokers opening shot I don't quite agree... I mean, it is a very brief shot so we really don't know how many people have stared at him as time went by, and it is not like the streets were overly crowded, and the camera didn't really focus on the other people, so for all we know there could have been people staring at him. Besides, big citys are full of weird looking people:p
I understand why you think Batman in a nightclub is odd -
I definitely agree with you about batman's voice. The demonic tone Bale gives it makes him seem more like a creature that comes out at night rather than just a man in a costume who fights crime to a criminals point of view.
Sorry but bale's voice nearly ruined the movie and yes keaton was better. And most of the times I could'nt even understand what the hell bale was saying so making fun of that selma and patty simpson voice will never get old.
There are worse "realism" flaws than that... how in the world could that many people on the boat have "voted" on what to do, and they counted and tallied all those votes, in just a few minutes?? It would be physically impossible.
The nightclub scene did not bother me. It reminded me of the scene in the animated "World's Finest" where Batman trashes the nightclub in search of information about the Joker, and he smashes one guy with a cage that has a dancing girl in it. Now that's bad-ass!
I'd also have to disagree on the score in fullest. While good by base nature, it borrowed from enough from Batman Begins that I don't feel it was anything worth accentuation to an Oscar-worthy echelon.
A constant climax bounded between action sequences and an imbalance as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Harvey Dent/Two Face's plights are sullied, belied, and nullified by the ever taking and authoritative presence that is the Joker, even off screen. Batman in this film feels like less a persona and more an icon because of such in myv iew. I feel Batman Begins was an experience of better paced and more emotional content. TDK is a good film - it does touch upon deep things. But it's not that great IMO.
To answer your question about "How I would have Batman's voice in Chris Nolan's realistic world..." I'd have it sound exactly as it did in BB. Perfect.

Skaterpen 1 year ago
authoritative, scary, and distinct from Wayne's, while still sounding like a (really, really authoritative, scary, and distinct) man.

The voice is ok.A little exaggerated but understand why it's there.I prefer Batman Begins to Dark Knight though.Just a matter of opinion
mucklebones1973 1 year ago
Here's my logic with your first problem:
He's standing there with his make up on, and his fellow heist-ers pick him up. They then all have a conversation about "why's he called the joker? "War paint..." Etc.
They just saw the guy!!
Aliksmyth 1 year ago
I agree with you about the joker introduction at the start but after all that's the magic of cinema, letting impossible and stupid things look possible and cool. For example just the idea of a man dressed as a bat that roams the city and is taken seriously by the citizens is already ridiculous.
thekingsean92 1 year ago
The nightclub scene was awesome. Well shot fight choreography, and it's not like Batman doing the Macarena in the club. He literally dived inside, beat down all the bouncers and bodygaurds and drags Maroni outside. He probably wasn't in the club for more than a minute.
VastedCouth 1 year ago
Batman used to bash partys in the comics as well. And remember (as I think You stated anyway) Batman was pissed! He didnt have time to wait for Maroni to go out of the club.

the voice in batman is ok,
but in the dark knight, it's just to extream and strange. He doesent even sound scary, he just sounds sick.
zomeraktiven 1 year ago
I personally think his voice changes in the movie because his mask or w.e covers his neck so it must effect his voice. (like when you put a rope around your neck your voice changes doesn't it? so i am guessing the same thing works with the costume. thats my opinion
Kolvincorpse 1 year ago
As much as I like Bale as Batman, the voice is just plain terrible. So bad it makes me laugh a bit in certain serious scenes. My wife and kids feel the same way. All he has to really do is lower his voice a bit and no one will recognize him. The combination of mask and slightly altered voice would suffice. Val Kilmer did it best. Hopefully Bale will change it a tad in the next flick.

what about when the joker pulls out of the bank in with the other buses? I would SO NOTICE THAT. Just saying.

@andympants Yeah. Everybodty talk how realistic Dark Knight was. Actually it wasnt. It was very, very comic book like. It just was just shot in a serious tone.
Maxush 1 year ago
Love this video man. Completely agree with every point. People don't seem to get the reason why Bale uses the voice. It's not just to do with hiding his identity, there are psychological reasons behind it. Bruce Wayne has taken on another persona. The voice represents a different part of his psychology. I love the way Bale made it sound as if Bruce was posessed when he put on the suit. No matter what anyone says, Christian Bale is the best Batman ever. (Maybe co-sharing that title with Conroy)
americanpsycho28 1 year ago 6
The batman voice in the dark knight is actually very will done, when judging the voice the Bale used you must keep in mind that this movie series by Nolan is much darker from the others, everything gets dark-character,setting,and even the voices. I like the voice of Kevin Conroy from the animated series, but something like that would not fit in this darker setting.
ivanaj003 1 year ago
Now that you mentioned it, I do think it's kinda weird how Joker doesn't have his mask on in the beginning of The Dark Knight, just standing on the sidewalk. It's like, "SOMEBODY FREAKIN' NOTICE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!" I mean, are people just stairing at the ground the whole time or something??? Without his mask on, I'm pretty sure someone is bound to notice him.
nerdsman567 1 year ago

@mrhorrormovieguy The only thing I disliked about Harvey Dent's story was that it was too short!
Ironcabbit 1 year ago
his voice didnt bother me at some scenes...only when hes yelling its kinda humorous. But the interrogation scene (before he REALLY loses it), his grave whisper is just PERFECT!
TB492 1 year ago
Not that Bale's voice bothered me that much but why would Batman need to disguise his voice? When he's Bruce, he talks to other millionaires and the people he works with. When he's Batman, he talks to the criminals and Jim Gordon and so on. For each identity, he's around totally different groups of people, they wouldn't go "Man, that freak in the mask sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne when he talks."
GuitaristDog87 1 year ago
Yes, but it's important to keep in mind that Bruce is a strong public figure. Everyone knows Bruce Wayne and would easily recognize him (even by his voice). His smug rich persona has a recognizable voice and needs to be disguised.
silverlightsaber 1 year ago 13
@silverlightsaber why do you care so much about his voice

i see and i totally understand, i don't get why people are so picky, whats the point of it all it just ruins the movie for themselves
j4manasseh 1 year ago
@silverlightsaber
JimmyBond00912 1 year ago
@JimmyBond00912 Bruce Greenwood's Batman voice in the new "Red Hood" animated movie sounds very close to the Scream serial killer's voice. Not that that's a bad thing...
Ironcabbit 1 year ago
@silverlightsaber True, but I think there could be a better way to disguise his voice, I think a voice kind of like Solid Snake's (the main character of the video game series, Metal Gear Solid) would fit Batman better.
GuitaristDog87 1 year ago
@GuitaristDog87 when bruce is batman he leaves all of bruce behind. he becomes a symbol the darkness of the costume how he moves and hides in the shadows and his voice are all apart of the symbol of batman. i think it would be less powerful if he was talking to a criminal in his normal voice.
footballward 1 year ago
@footballward I already said in a comment that I took back what I said. Yes, Bruce should disguise his voice when he's Batman. I personally just didn't like Bale's disguised voice as Batman. I think something like Solid Snake's voice or Clint Eastwood's grim whisper voice like in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" would be a better disguised voice for Batman.

great video by the way :)
coolr77 1 year ago
I disagree a bit, in the bank job the Joker is not posing as himself, the guys in the van don't even know it's him while they're talking about the split; safe to say he wasn't in full joker make up, in another scene we see him in a cop uniform without makeup; in the bank job he's posing as a hired thug just like the others.
As to the voice, yeah, if you read Knightfall by Dennis O'Neil, Batman does'nt have a voice, he has a rasp.
Love your mashups, they're the best.
Congratulations.
aserel2 2 years ago
"This city... just showed you... that it's full of people... ready to believe in good."
Watch Batman deliver that line. Is it menacing, or comical? Should Joker be frightened, or ask if Batman needs a glass of water?
I've long maintained that Bale should take a few voice lessons from Kevin Conroy (who had very distinct voices for Bruce Wayne and Batman). But yeah; great movie. Minor nitpicks don't change that.
Skulanus 2 years ago
HolySasquatchTurd 2 years ago
@HolySasquatchTurd maybe Nolan will have him change his voice in the next movie.
coolr77 1 year ago
@HolySasquatchTurd What makes you think that it wasn't on purpose? In this series, Batman is still growing into the hero he will become. The events in The Dark Knight just represent his first severe test. I personally think we will see him modify his Batman voice in the next film.
Ironcabbit 1 year ago
@Ironcabbit Oh, I know he did it a different voice on purpose. What I meant was the voice he uses sounds awful is all.

wc470 2 years ago
I don't really have too much of issue with it, but one thing I've always wondered, and I haven't seen anyone mention yet, if he does it to disguise his voice, why does he still use his "batman" voice when talking to Fox? Fox already knows who he is, he gave him the batman suit lol
jokesonyou91 2 years ago
I think batmans voice was always going to be a problem, so many different cultures have different opinions and are bound to have problems.
xuereko is the only other peson I've seen think about batman having some sort of voice muffling chip, that way it would fit in with almost any given voice aswell as easier language translation (as long as the voice chip is explained)
But tbh I thought the voice was spot on.
KroBars 2 years ago
I agree, I find nothing wrong with The Batman voice. For those complaining about gravelly, certainly he got gravelly near the end, but remember he had been stabbed severely AND had to emote to communicate with the psychotic Dent.
My only complaints are that Batman did not look particularly vicious or secretive while beating up Lau's guards in the Hong Kong building, the movie jumped around a little too much (would have appreciated a longer courtroom scene) and that Harvey Dent died.
Ironcabbit 2 years ago
the only problem i have with this movie is that they never explained when Harvey and Rachel got kidnapped. its like in the interrogation scene (brilliant scene by the way) batman asks the joker, "wheres Dent?" and i was like, when did that happen? granted it took me the 4th viewing to notice but its something that just bugs me. other than that, no problems what so ever.
GamingShadow01 2 years ago

him seem more dark.
But I LOVE BOTH MOVIES SO MUCH..

Actually.. You make good points...

I get where you're coming from but in a busy city most people wouldn't bat an eye.

i really like Batmans voice in TDK and BB, because its like a deep, scary, gravley tone, and it gives me chills, if he did that to me and talked to me, i wouldn't crap my pants, i'd either faint or scream like a girl, i'm dead serious.

Im thinking to myself... why? any explanations? maybe he is just getting too pumped up for some ass kicking? lol

I think you were right about Batman's voice. I got sick of the voice-haters within a month.

but I kind of thought it was cool, that he dosen't want to wait for Maroni to get out, so he just walks straight in and kick the ass of people who is dumb enough to get in his way:p
But yeah, I really agree with you on the voice! Good video!

I strongly agree with you about the Batman voice!
