these interviews are awesome. i had no idea Cynic toured with Cannibal Corpse... i kinda feel sorry for em coz i could see some narrow minded 'brutal' corpse fans giving them shit.
yeah man, cynic is a totally different dimension. it's a corner stone. i remember myself in school i was listenening metallica, malmsteen, death, etc, but cynic changed me. ever since then i was listeneing and self educating myself with fusion, ethnic music, jazz and classics. all this was right after ive heard cynic, after listenening pauls masterminds like scott henderson, mahavishnu orch etc
He dude what fusion jazz can u recomend I really like Cynic and Atheist but don't know much about other bands in that style... I also like some other heavier experimental stuff like Meshuggah and Gorguts
Aghora is pretty awesome (you should have known them). if you like meshugah you'd also like gojira i think. but i dont like that heavy stuff.
In instrumental fusion - larry coryell, scott henderson, bela fleck & the flecktones, greg howe, some awesome crossover guitarists like scotty anderson (closer to jazz). if you want more traditional fusion for educational cause, its early chick corea, steps ahead, miles davis (1969-8x), weather report..
You can try Mahavishnu Orchestra of course. But also Billy Cobham (especially the first album "Spectrum" which is wonderful) or Return to Forever. I'm into fusion since only few weeks, but I find this three bands very interesting.
P.S : Oh ! And I'm a brutal death metal fan, but I love Cynic. ^^
Check out Tribal Tech! The record Illicit with songs like "the Big Wave", record "Face First" (track Face First, and "Salt Lick", record "Reality Check" with "Stella by neoparticle utlra neon beam" (or something). Paul took lessons from guitarist Scott Henderson feat. in Tribal Tech. Also check out Swedish duo Mats/Morgan who played on Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendahls Special Defects record. They have a live album from jazzclub Fashing that is SICK with songs "Schizo" and "Jigsaw Pussle"
@Emanny237 Check out Exivious and Gordian Knot. Exivious is really jazzy, but still metal (most of the time) and they include 2 members from Traced in Air Cynic. Gordian Knot has Sean Malone who did session bass for both Cynic albums, and it also includes a buttload of other musicians from other prog bands.
Every word that you typed down was the exact same thing I experienced after listening to this band and other bands related to cynic, As a drummer, I was focusing a lot in everything heavy right to the core before...until Jazz, Blues, Fusion, Classical etc., Influenced me a lot and it changed everything and made me fuse all of those elements to our composition. It's great having bands like this.
Cannibal Corpse haven't released anything good since "Vile", and Tomb of the Mutilated is their only stand-out Album.

Dude, type in 'Vuvr - Pilgriliage'.
It's like Cynic, Atheist, and their own sound mixed into together.
