I love all these lush orchestrations/arrangements which are so rare today because nearly everythings knocked out by synths in a laboratory - giving it none of that depth and texture - now it seems.
Man... I never knew until today that there's a 12" disco single of this song. Back in the 70's, long versions are found in LP's and no need to look for separate 12-inch mixes. How come Chic didn't put this long version in their 'Risque' album and instead put the short/edit version? (2/14/12)
Chic was my No1 group back in the day. Good times was my fave song. I can't figure out why today's music lacks the essence/groove/feelgoodfactor of that era. Maybe those were our young carefree days and so was the music...shame we can't go back....if for nothing else but the music.
@MusicalSista I don't think modern music lacks the feelgoodfactor but then I guess you have to search for feel good songs cause it's true some modern songs lack the feel good factor.
As strange as this might seem both Chic and Roxy Music used the same studio at different times but Nile Rodgers and Bryan Ferry managed to connect, share some ideas and influences. This was around 1979..In the mid 80's Rodgers and Ferry teamed up for 'Help Me' used in the movie "The Fly".. During this period both men were great friends and it showed in their music..
you listen to this, and you understand that todays' music is SERIOUSLY lacking in everything from talent, to pure musicianship. Its EXTREMELY rare that you would even hear rhythm sections or any sort of orchestration in ANY popular music, today. And it annoys me when groups like Chic, are knocked for making what we call 'disco music'..that label ended a lot of careers, that didnt deserve the demise that they met. If this is 'disco music' then Im proud to say that I LOVE IT!
MY MAN, this is just a good thing, no matter how you put it, im ROLLER SKATER,
and you give me all the joints i SKATED to back in the 80's in then some, its good seening that waxs spinning, wow, we had it good back then no money. but lots of good music, im a 60' baby, so i know good music, keep up the good work DJ CURT MOE
Listen to this bass player. He's partying over there-yet-he always comes back home. (that's musician talk ya'll). God Bless Tha Bass Man!!! and rest in peace....
@Erbgrinder Thanks for the mini history fact! So many of the bands of that era (or any era for that matter) were usually lead by one in particular; Maurice White, for example, and I had forgotten that Niles Rodgers was one of them. I knew that he waled on the guitar and did keys but that bass , I thought, was played by another brother who'd passed away. Oh well, it's diffinitely C L A S S I C / N O W ! !
@MrKenndawg You were right. Bernard Edwards was the bass player on this track, may he rest in peace. Not only a fantastic bass player, but a brilliant song writer as part of the collaboration with Nile Rodgers. This link might be of interest to you though:
Incidentally, just found out Nile Rodgers is going to be about 300 yards from me in November to be interviewed!! I'll be taking a few of my Chic vinyls down there for him to sign. :D
@Erbgrinder Thanks. Word to the wise...try and pick up a cd or two of their classics, especially the cd that this cut comes off of. Artist love to sign their new sh*t. And unless the vinyls are in great shape, you'll sought've look like a '70's baby in an 21st century world (if you get the drift?!?). PEACE and enjoy!!
@Erbgrinder Bernard Edwards did bass. Nile Rogers does the tasty guitar riffs that we all have recognized as his signature on singles not only by Chic, but Sister Sledge and Diana Ross that he wrote and produced.
What has happened to all this black funk/disco music? It must be the best era for black music, it's funky, good beat, full of instruments, dancable and brilliant music. Why has black music dissolved into rap and hip hop which is just horrible horrible music. What has happened to all the soul/funk/disco?
HOLY FREAKIN CRAP!!!! I didn't know there was an extended version of this beautiful, timeless and unforgettable dance classic!!!! Still my favorite song in the world!!!! (the radio edit doesn't do any justice at all). I also remember this song being sampled in Luther Vandross' "Shine," but the sampling of this tune that was used by Black Eyed Peas is the worst (talk about a total fail!). Thank you so much for uploading and sharing the extended version!!!! YOU'RE DA MAN!!!! Playlisted :-)
Dude I stumbled across your uploads and this is the greatest!!! I did not even realize that there isn't any videos !! Damn this music sounds so good !! I am a member and a fan now ..... Vinyl all day . It sounds beautiful.
the bep do have a purpose - sometimes, when i feel sick and i need to throw up, all i have to do is put on one of their musical ass- rapes. seriously ... while my bass gear rots away in the garage, i fondly remember the days of great live music, people dancing without texting, and social interaction that went beyond holding a beer, while mindlessly staring. hilarious.
BTW, Nile rodgers is one of the all time most successful musicians on the planet, and a legend when it comes to his guitar playi
Bernie Edwards was just an insanely good bass player... if you listen closely he almost never plays his line the same way -he continuously adds subtle variations
Slayed5000 you are so awsome with all these hot jams from the 70 and 80s . Im glad we kept these 12inch records, and how much thes mean to us DJs from the past. I have mine in the same condition as if they was just bought from the record store.. Kepp them playing, man
@colin4393 yeah they kinda fucked up with this one lol The END and the Beginning were not that good...no moderate replay value what so ever. Now Elephunk and Monkey Business are classics in my opinion. They're not "the" worst act in the industry but i just think they need to keep it soulful and funky and leave that hyperactive shit to lady gaga or whoever else...thats my opinion.
I love all these lush orchestrations/arrangements which are so rare today because nearly everythings knocked out by synths in a laboratory - giving it none of that depth and texture - now it seems.
