  • Well, then, how come there are so many people on real drugs, who never get well? I know a lady who's gone through every test there is, has been under treatment for 8 mos. She's no chicken or idiot. Heck, she'd be a good Vulcan. The pain is still there, the leg swelling etc. symptoms still there. The treatments? $60 a pop. Instead of Chemo, we should treat cancer patients with sugar water. We could charge the same, and doctors & medical corporations could make a fortune!

  • also einzige deutsche hier

  • do they actually work though, or do people just think they worked or feel like they worked?

what if people just say what they think they are supposed to say, as most folks seem locked in those patterns - the usual, 'i better not say it's that cause that will mean xyz happens, so i'll just tell them what they want to hear' - like if you apply for a fake job and pretend to like the company etc, it's all bs cause they are all bs to begin with.

  • 1 Person has no human characteristics.

  • This one time, one of my friends kept complaining of a terrible headache, so I took this as an opportunity to try out the Placebo effect, so I clenched his neck in a few random ways (That I knew would have no effect on him) and I told him it was an old remedy, he believed me and his headache went away.

  • Dan raises the question on how our expectations effect our outcomes and the application of this knowledge to the pricing of medicine and services.

  • Say its worth $800 but sell it at a "discount" for a special price of $30. Same expensive effect at a cheaper price

  • I'm quite interested in this author and subject. Are they any other recommended reads?

  • @AzNDraGoN4594 try danarielydotcom or either of his two books

  • Very interesting about how powerful our mind can be!!

  • hÊh_ÄÑyÒnÊ_wÃnNä_chÁt_wìth_mÉ_í_fÊÈl_sÒ_loÑÉlY_t0Day╝

  • More ancient versions of this "placebo theory" are "shamanism", "exorcism", "witchcraft" and many other.

If the illness is pure psychological it actually can heal the patient if he believes in the treatment.

If the illness is physical it will not prove a cure though it may be helpfull to put the patient on a positive attitude towards his treatment.

Even with the right medicines it is difficult to treat a patient with a negative attitude towards his therapy.

  • It's called Buddhism

  • If you can use hypnosis on yourself, it will have the same effect. Works 10x better than getting drunk on ethanol to lower the pain.

Hmm, pharmacists should learn on how to hypnotize the patients & make them think they've taken some magical pain meds (no side effects!).

  • water use to relive my headaches cause i assumed it would and i noticed when i expected to have a good time from alcohol i got drunk alot* quicker after i wasnt expecting to have a good time i could drink 18packs at 17yr..

i remember as a child i expected to dream of tomorrow to see if my mom would still be there and for awhile always had deja vu..

does cults/witchcraft apply to the placebo effect? any studies on that?

  • i know a guy who was told "wine gum sweets" are actually made from wine.... he thought he was drunk!!

  • Clearly what these guys need to do is a placebo versus placebo trial...

  • @ZDoggMD The most expencive placebo wil have a better effect. ¶:o)

  • @mysund Yup. The brand name sugar pill that has no generic yet will show itself to be statistically superior in a placebo versus placebo trial.

  • youre a dick

  • @stdeelee No way dude. Ok, maybe i'm kindof a dick but if you met this cat you'd know what i mean. Anyways it wasnt my pubes, but the point was the placebo affect. He freakin thought he was high ahaha

  • yeah

  • im actually oposite of what he said in the video. if i know painkillers are cheap i will think that i have access to more and consentrate on the effects ti see how much i need or if thats enough. but if ihave expensive painkillers i expect them to work the first time and fell uneasy about them the whole time because i have to rely on them so heavily. thank you if you've actually read this insanely long comment.

  • @luckynumber58 yeah but then again people don't see everything the same way right? there are always bound to be people who see whatever is said oppositely or in a slightly different way. yes?

  • Pretty sure the accent is Israeli. Hebrew.

  • @SoulsForPaper good guess

  • Woo! i predicted the results of that first study! take that, internet!

Also, what accent is he speaking in?

  • It sounds sort of French... but I'm not really sure. I think it's a mix of French and something else... maybe something Germanic.

(I don't actually know, so don't take me too seriously)

  • I am almost thru reading Dan Ariely's book, 'Predictably Irrational." It is truly facinating

  • I sold fake weed to a guy and he said he got high.

  • scandalous

  • I sold a homeless man rubbing alcohol in a vodka bottle...he died... : (

  • That's like selling poison to kids and saying it's candy.

  • @jiggakilla666 buy a keg of non-alcoholic beer for a party and people will get drunk too

  • This dude is a good speaker. He gave a Ted Talk as well everyone should take a look at that. Reallly really interesting.

  • Why does placebo work just as well as anti-depressants? This is like asking why placebo works better than trepanation. Anti-depressants don't work very well. I'm confused how anyone could reach a different conclusion.

  • Because depression is a product of marketing more than physiology.

  • It's funny to think that if you don't have insurance when you go to a doctor's office and you have to pay out of pocket, the fact that you're paying more (at that time) to the office could make the treatment work better.

In that case, I call for Universal NON-Healthcare!

  • When my Ins plan changed and I was forced to pay a lot more out of pocket, I found I became MORE critical of quality of care and the amount of time wasted due to poor practice (MD running late, over booking, etc.) I'm paying more, and now far more discerning about quality, value. Pretty predictable.

  • Its amazing to learn of the sheer scope of the placebo effect. When you consider these examples, you have to wonder about all the implications in every area of our lives.

  • interesting yet there is a tendency of overgeneralization in his conclusions. some ppl have more control over their thoughts and emotions than others so this psycho mind trick could work on ppl with low degree of self-control

  • What are the racial implications?

  • I'd like to know what happens when you test between countries. I think this is this US

For example. I designed a electronic device that cost around $1400. I had problems selling it in the US and and I could not figure out why. Several people who tried it told me that it worked great, but it was too light.

I changed the case from plastic to metal and added a plate in the bottom to give it additional weight.

Sales went up in the United States.

  • what did it do?

  • That's fascinating

  • He's talking about religion I think. It's a metaphor for people believing in something they cannot see or hear, but it makes them feel good inside.

    I think thats it.

  • no he's not, it can be applied, but just listen to all of his examples, they interesting and important enough in their own respects. religion is already pervasive in far too many topics, lets not inject it unnecesarily

  • because people want to believe...

  • time is essence. time will tell the difference.
