  • 10 bucks says I messed it up. I'm making 3.0.3 right now because I had to turn on some thinkpad options(you'd think you could turn it on without re-compiling the damn kernel gosh) but still, this was a learning trip. Thanks a ton

  • Here's what I would do:

    # apt-get install kernel-package build-essential libncurses5-dev

    # cd /usr/src

    # wget [path to linux source package]

    # tar xjvf linux-[version number].tar.bz2

    # cd /usr/src/linux-[version number]

    # make menuconfig

    # make clean

    # make-kpkg --append-to-version -whatever --initrd kernel_image && make-kpkg --append-to-version -whatever --initrd modules_image

    # dpkg -i /usr/src/linux-[version number]-whatever.deb

  • nice tutorial ^^

  • @icekool666 sorry, in order to find this stuff interesting you need to possess intelligence/intellect. Since you seem to lack both of those, I can understand how you could find this boring. Have a good day right back at ya!

  • thanks bro :)

  • SPEAK UP!!!!!!!!

  • sudas

  • you do have a very forceful voice, but very underused, lol.

  • SPEAK UP!

  • Sorry, I am the owner of a shitty mic. I was practically shouting as it was :P

My suggestion is to just turn the youtube player volume up, luckily that isn't too hard.

  • @igneousphantom "My suggestion is to just turn the youtube player volume up, luckily that isn't too hard." my laptop is on the maximum volume and i still cant hear you well

  • @Paddeiii then, if you honestly care to watch the video, download it with something like clive or youtube-dl and watch it with mplayer -softvol -softvol-max 1000. I don't even have the original screencast oggs anymore, so I couldn't re-master this even if I wanted to.

  • @RenegadeFury shut up

  • @robscars123 NO U fag

  • no i got it now the root account wasnt enabled

  • ha i need help at the first step, when i put "su (enter)" in it comes up with "password:"when i type in my password it doesn't show any characters and when i enter it in it says authentication denied, please help

  • ha now i got it i just need to extract 2.6.31(i know odd number, im insane) to usr/scr

  • su only works if you have a root password setup if you don't remember your password let us know. if you have sudo installed you can sudo passwd to prompt to reset the password. if any of this helps great if not just ask and help where we can.

  • @onelife151 where or how do iget help?

  • @doodoobrown1987 what kind of help are you looking for?

  • In linux you can't see letters typed to passwords

  • sudo su

  • Thanks for this video

  • I was trying to do this a long time ago because the kernel was too old... Thanks

  • It works! Hooray! Although I had to edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg instead of /boot/grub/menu.lst because I use GRUB 1.96 (GRUB 2)

  • so fucking beeeeeeeeeeeding edgeeeeeee ant ti think slackware guys dont use grub becouse its "unstable" lol.

  • I am compiling 2.6.29 right now!

  • I hava a request that has been requested in forums and for some reason there how those not work this app! I'm referring to Pulseaudio.....Can u make a how to Pulseaudio on Debian Linux? So that it can be used system wide or on a per user basis?

  • Thanks for the series !

Was able to update my Debian Lenny to 2.6.28

  • Thanks igneous and ur rite it is time for peanut butter Reese pieces!!!

  • igneous, How do i upgrade to Debian Sid from Debian Squeeze? So that when i " sudo cat /etc/debian_version "

    it doesn't echo " squeeze/sid "

Can u help me with this issue?

  • it's pretty simple, edit your sources.list, replace testing (or squeeze, whatever) with unstable, then apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, and you're set. You'll probably see some breakage, but anyone with half a brain should be able to fix it with 10 minutes of googling.

Also: /etc/debian_version is a text file that does nothing, you could edit it to "peanutbutter/jelly" and it shouldn't make a difference.

  • Peanutbutter jelly time, it's peanutbutter jelly time!

  • @igneousphantom for somebody thats been doing this shit for years maybe, not somebody that just started doing this shit today, never fucked with linux once prior to today

  • Bad audio

  • Don't go purchase a cheap computer. That's the old way. Download a copy of Virtual Box for free and create a virtual machine to install whatever flavor of linux you want.

  • I just installed Debian Lenny in VirtualBox for Linux(Ubuntu) and it configured XFCE and X to use a resolution larger than my actual monitor, so I'd go with the cheapo computer.

  • thats Vbox fault man sorry :(

  • @leeroyjenkinsii i dont need to purchase one i have about 15 old computers my parents own an isp

  • I am totally a newbie in Debian. What kind of book do/can you recommend to buy and start learning Debian from 0?

  • There is no book that can teach you what a two months of tinkering can. Purchase a cheapo computer for $20 on craigslist or ebay. That's cheaper than most books, and there's plenty of documentation that comes with the OS.

  • It would help a lot if you can include the sequence of commands for getting the kernel compiled in the description of one of the videos :-)

  • done. I'll try to make a habit of providing notes in my upcoming videos.

  • google: kernel compilation on etch

that should get you a link to the debian forum with a guide to building the kernel package

    good video btw

  • Audio is not too bad really. But thank you alot for this.

I'm going to try to do it this weekend ^^

  • I like linux, but the audio is too quiet.I can't hear you at all

  • Yeah me too!

  • really?Which version of linux are you use right now?I used Ubuntu

  • I hadn't looked at the video yet, I'm going through my mailings, but it's good that you posted this, I'm not very good at topics like this..

But your audio is a bit quiet.. I wish there was a really good solution on Linux for controlling audio levels, I think Kino might work well, it supports HD but you have to convert to DV if you have space available for it. I in particular want better support for audio in blender as that's what I use sometimes to edit videos in Ubuntu.

  • It is unfortunate that my volume is so low. I think It's actually a bug with alsa. My sound card isn't fully (i.e. +20 db boost) supported. I bought an Audigy 4, which alsa apparently has amazing support for. I have a buddy who has the exact same model card I bought, and he's given me his .asoundrc. So _hopefully_ everything will turn out ok for my next videos. Otherwise, I think I'll try to use oggz-rip + audacity + oggz-merge for correcting my volume. That might even be my next video subject.
