I was eight years old and this was my favorite song -- I drove my parents nuts singing it in the car every single time we went out. I knew all of Jimmie's songs by heart back then. (Okay, I was a weird little kid. So sue me.) Does anyone else remember him as an actor in "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come?"
JUST MISSED!!! As stated above "Bimbombey" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 16 weeks in the Top 100 in 1958!!!
Thank u for sharing this song. I've been searching this song all my life coz this song is where my nickname "Bombay" came from. My dad told me when i was a baby every time when i cried then he turned on this song and then i stopped. After that every time he called me "Bombay" then i stopped crying as well.
When Jimmie Rodgers toured here in 1965 I was fortunate enough to get to see him and to hear this song again certainly brings back great memories. Will always be one of my favourites
Oh, this brings back memories! My grandmother used to play this record for me whenever I visited because I loved it so much. Thank you for posting this. . .it's as much fun as ever!
I said it the last time this (or similar recording) was posted. This was the first 'current' song my piano teacher let me play and as such it is still a favorite with me, after 53 years.
I was thinking the same thing! I've heard another version of it, a later recording that was really awful. But this is the one I recall hearing on the radio, and the one I love the best -

This song hit #1 on the top forty stations record charts in the Memphis area in late 1958 and early 1959.

The 50's must have been a great era. It's sad the way the world has changed and it doesn't seem to be for the better.
