Yep and that protection ended in 1989 with Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 incident. Relations were further deteoriated by US supporting Taiwan independece by frequent US CArrier battlegroup patrol visits, sales of weapons to Iran and everything was toppled with 2001 incident involving P-3 Orion near Hainan island and Chinese fighter whose pilot was killed. Further deteoriarions go on with ASAT tests on both sides. No way USA are allies with China, get it over man.. they were once, not anymore

Just like U.S. President Eisenhower threatened Britain with dumping British debt, ruining British Sterling pound, and ruining British economy, Wikileaks said China has already used U.S. debt as leverage in Taiwan case.

China possess the capacity, along with Russia, to be mortal threats based on capacity alone, but China lacks the motive or intention to hurt U.S. economy. Look at the trade deficit, I'm sure China will want to milk America as long as possible.

@Flankymanga, I think that unfuturnate period had a lot to do with both cultures' differences. Althoungh both countries were ideologically the same, we really didn't know each other very well as people. China looked up to USSR as a big brothers, however, China had been the big brother to other countries for all its history, it simply didn't know how to be little brother. On the other hand, Russia didn't know China very well either, half the time it gave China wrong advices & had no patient...

After all, CCP has modeled after Lenin's ideaology & PRC was built by USSR's help, although the past 30years there are some changeds, but 80% frame work remained the same. However what i don't like is their evergrowing lust for more land. In modern world the border of states have been communicated by diplomats and bilaterally approved between neighbours Russia and China. China had some disputes with Russia but as far as i know they have been solved and agreed. They wont get back to China as China wont let go of tibet.

Tibet is one of many civilizations that China has absorbed over her 5,000 year civilization, and if Tibet couldn't secure international recognition after Imperial overthrow, Civil war, and Japanese invasion, or even turmoil of Great Leap or Cultural revolution, there is no way in hell since China is rapidly developing into a second Superpower.

China has 110 million people on the Manchuria border, whereas the bulk of Russias 140 million population is located West of the Ural mountains, some 11 time zones away. Thats farther than Washington to London, a vast emptiness of NOTHING lol China is well on her way to demographically swamp Russia Far East, it will be a matter of time when 19th century Treaty of Aigun is reversed

Ofcourse it won't be that big, but actually Russia is already stealing Chinese workers from China :) But thinking that Russians would give up their land is very naive... be it for chinese or enyone else. china is forced to lack the desire to take it back - they are facing a true superpower Russia :)

My friend's father is a Department of Defense (D.O.D) strategic military analyst, a professional. He says in the event of a war between Russia and China, China would blitzkrieg up to the Ural mountains within 2 week. Russia wouldn't stand a chance in Siberia against China.

Remember when China amassed like 8 million troops on the Sino-Russian border, and the Russian general asked the U.S. if U.S.S.R pre-emptively nuked China, would the U.S. intervene or will it give the Russians the permissiosn to nuke China. The United States was like hell no, and followed this up with the promise of U.S. nuclear protection after the Sino-Vietnamese punitive wars in 1979.

@Phead128 you know what is the differrence between now and then? Its called GLONASS. Their precision GPS guided weapons could not be used as the Americans turned off GPS for that region. Now Russians have their own GLONASS. Now they would massacre any enemy precisely from great stand off ranges without risking their own assets. And lets not forget they have now their own UAVs.China would stand no chance as they would use GPS jammers and GLONASS for their own weapons.

@Phead128 I guess you haven't hear about IS program of the Soviet Union the legendary (Istrebitel-Sputnik) in the 1960s. Soviet Union by that time was the FIRST to have anti-sattelite weapons. Russians have the longest experience with them. They were the first to perform tests. They actually still have as the only nation of the world aircraft capable to launch asat missile to destroy satelites. My friend you seriusly lack knowledge to argue with me :)

Russia conquered Siberia and Outer Manchuria in the 18th and 19th centuries, but China conquered Tibet in the 13th century, and has held it for over 400 years.

In Siberia there was no empire other than mongols. Mongols were humiliated later and the land they gotten was taken from them because of their aggressive behaviour. Thats normal form of punishment for causing the losses. But China conquered Tibet? That means China militarily stolen the land from Tibet.

From wikipedia: "and the Russian Empire, conquered it during the 16th to 19th centuries". 16th century means year 1500 -1600 of our calendar. This means Russians are holding it for more than 500 years!!! More than China held tibet. The differrence was that Russia integrated Siberian people into its culture and they were not hesitating. This is not the case of Tibet.

Westerners, who colonized the entire world, should not lecture China on Tibet.

You might as well lecture China on the other kajillion small kingdoms, civilizations she conquered in her 5,000 year.
