Well, just think about the amount of people inside this small island compared with USA and then you will have a lot reasons to feel the pain after that game. Considering how small the Puerto Rican population is with over 4 million in Puerto Rico and another 4 million plus in the 50 states the Puerto Ricans have a very successful basketball program. Their ethnic breakdown is probably the reason. Spain has been the most consistent basketball program in european tournaments and the african american population is the main reason for team USA's success. Countries with both an african and spanish ethnic breakdown have been very successful in basketball.

Your point about the US being better doesn't contradict my point that Puerto Rico beating them is a big deal, it actually justifies my point.
