I was in La Canada that night taking photos and saw those explosions. Put the power out in the area for a while. I ALMOST caught them but missed the shot. Nice to see someone got them on video!
That is some CRAZY cool footage! I took some footage from the Foothill freeway the day before.
Fire will actually conduct electricity as DC or Direct Current. Any HVAC service tech knows that. Gas-fired furnaces use that phenomenon in their safety control circuits.
Containment seems to be hovering at 22% last I heard. But you must check out this excellent Google map. It updates constantly and has that type of info and so much more...
I don't think I can post links, so instead try this:
On Google web search (not map), type the following (include the quotes):
"Los Angeles area fires: Mount Wilson, La Canada Flintridge, Altadena, La Crescenta, Glendale, Pasadena, Acton, Agua Dulce"
The first result with a url that starts with: maps.google. is it!
Good vid, nice capture. Just did a Google web search like you recommended & found the site. This site gives great, accurate info on the fire. Thanks for that! The news isn't doing a good job at keeping us informed imo.
I just read on that site that The Hidden Springs Cafe has been totally destroyed by this fire. I haven't been up there in a few years. I'm truly sorry that this little cafe is gone.
Such an awful thing that's happened to our county. Thx again for the vid & info.
1. The camera I shot with is a Panasonic PV-GS400. It's just a prosumer miniDV, but it does have a 3CCD chip. Also the LCD viewer in huge, and it's got a decent zoom and image stabilizer. A good eBay buy!
2. I think we were about 200-300 yards away. Though the source of the explosion may have been a little further than that.
3. Officially, the cause has yet to be determined. But I've heard a couple officials say they suspect arson...
Thanks goodgraciousme! I thought your footage was pretty sweet too. It's cool to see some good daylight close-ups. Well done!
I had to repost my video here because someone decided to flood YouTube with spam UFC video links that bare many of the tag words of this fire and other current events. PLEASE, EVERYONE, FLAG THAT SPAM!
The explosions were not as big as the title indicates but that is good because nobody got injured.

Sure the footage was great but it sucks that the camera guy was moving too much and i was not able to see the explosion clear!!

Fire was just ruled arson

Amazing footage. It's boggling that something that looks so beautiful is so devastatingly awful.

Good video. How well is the fire being contained now do you know?

Those are 220,000 volt transmission lines and they'll arc when anything gets close to them. That must have been loud!
enigma800 2 years ago
It was crazy loud!
And yeah, I did hear something about the carbon released from the fire having the ability to create or at lease enhance arcs in power lines.
News to me!
I love science, but this one baffles me. So let me know if the carbon theory seems plausible.

this would be great stock footage if you were making a movie that involved a meteor impact
