..............and have you noticed any major developments other than that its now pretty? Falmouth never new the phrase 'traffic jam' before- all roads led to ware or out... now you have to mind all those one ways and streets.
Making Falmouth aesthetically pleasing is irrelevant. What you people call 'trashy' looking is an historic town. So far, this development has ruined most of our mangroves, the coral reef and de-glistened glistening waters. It's blocked off certain areas to locals, so we now have less places to hang out, all those buses on the two-laned roads in the morning is frustrating
our country is a 3rd world country, so even though this "development" is happening everywhere, our country cannot handle the tides attached to that. So I have no clue why we so damn nuff and nuh just stick to we own raas hotel. Eh hem, pardon me. As I was saying though, we were doing fine with sandals, beaches, and other attractions; all sandals and beaches resorts are green globe certified. Ok well maybe I shouldnt say we were doing FINE before, but we were never in 224 US mil debt + more.
Contd. After falmouth the coastline has been damaged and detroyed to accommodate the tourists, they will not be spending more than a few hours in falmouth.. and then they're out. The revenue will not be going to our goverment. Probably only a 2% if that much. The gift shops, restaurants and where ever the tourists visit will be in the vicinity of royal caribbean entities, therefore, the money is going back to them. We are already in debt. So now we have 224 US mil to add on to that. Silly Gov.
@ the first comment. The video is not showing the development of Falmouth. It is showing that falmouth needs to develop a pier and another coastline to accommodate Royal Caribbean Cruise lines. The argument at hand here is that the cruise ship is already suitable enough for a 5 star vacation so tourists need not leave the ship. This is indeed happening everywhere, but jamaica needs its mangroves and coral reefs, etc. to survive.
peolple this is happening all over the world how many of the iconic british brands belong to british ppl? how many of the big american companies are totally owned by americans, i used to sell in Falmouth market with my sister when i was little Falmouth has been neglected. any form of invstment helps. it was in Jamaican hands and nonody did anything with it. the hotels own the beach but they take care of it, many of the public beaches are neglected and in a sad state
wait - anyone in this thread please tell me how jamaicans are going to MAKE money from this? I have been to Jamaica a dozen times and tourists, like lemmings are herded to predetermined locations where they can spend their cash.
Did any Jamaican construction companies get any bids? I am more than positive foreign workers were brought in to work on this newly introduced piece of land that isnt even considered jamaican soil.
Watch 'Life and Debt' to get an idea how Jamaica has been screwed.
people are so caught up in "development" they aren't even paying attention to the fact that these corporations are not for the benefit of the people or the island of Jamaica. Piece by piece this island is being divided and sold out and the people feel helpless and just sit and watch the destruction go on around them. This really hurts me so see this slow motion train wreck. I love Jamaica and this should not be happening

Piece by piece this island is being divided and sold out and the people feel helpless and just sit and watch the destruction go on around them.
Not to mention in a country this populated...the government can't even come up with a proper waste disposal and recycling plan???? So I highly doubt the impact of this project on the environment...whatever it may be..is even being considered. There probably is some displacement going on...N probably its not being done fairly. There is probably a whole bunch of good from this project..and a whole bunch of bad. But at the end...local Jamaicans will get basically nothing from all of this anyways!!
Any corruptions and downfalls to this project I can believe. Its been sold out to the world..taken away from its people..the government sucks up money that should be going to the people. Look at the Traffic beauru scandal...mining company in partnership with Jamaia. All the money payed out to Jamaica was going into politicians bank accounts under the title " Personal gifts". When you have JA politicians who are US multi millionaires..tell me again anyone is looking out for actual Jamaicans!!
Whatever people want to say....whether this video is true or not....the real truth is...Jamaicans...I'm talking real Jamaicans...have already been robbed of their own country. They cannot go to the nice beach spots, the bluest parts of the ocean because resorts own them. This country doesn't even own this country. Everything has been sold out pice by piece...from sugar cane, resorts, carib cement etc!! Contracts for the whola Jamaica belong to everyone but Jamaica. Everything worse than it seems
This video is nearly total nonsense. It's ran by a bunch of hustlers who want to attract investors to their own ideas that are worthless and ultimately a loser except for themselves. ANYONE, with an eye for business can see that this is an amateurish SCAM for FRAUD! Just look at their JADMIC proposal and see for yourselves on FACEBOOK! These people will eventually end up in PRISON!
An old broken down sugar factory, a dilapidated fishing village, a shack - filled produce market space - are these the things that the producers of the documentary want future generations of Falmouth to continue to subside on? There is something known as sustainable environmental development, if they have evidence that there is irreparable environmental destruction going on, let them present it, if not do not stand in the way of progress.
I'm old and dottering. Without this cleaning up of the town I would never dare set foot there. I don't know which Jamaicans will benefit from the money I spend. If they had kept their population under control, I'd be able to see it as it was, but they didn't; it's gone; and I'll see it in this artificial way. I appreciate the video. Being a scientist, I respect thoughtful people (creators of this video) with different opinions.
Are you even serious they said this ship is better than the island??? They must all be smoking crack pipes then because that's an insult to the island that is playing HOST to their megabucks. The money over matter mentality makes me sick and maybe if those tycoons would get off their own damn ships and take a look around.....there are REAL people living real lives and working REAL jobs in that country. Jobs that don't deal with rich, snobby tourists.
**** that. Leave Jamaica Alone. Nuff with the tourist ting already. Dem need real ting. Dem already take up all the beach dem with rahted hotel. *suck teeth*
"Build baby Build" its about time who cares about fishing village.. I'm tired of seeing all those shacks, this is 2010 we need progress. we could use another port on the south coast whitehouse area, i bet coming soon!
This video is inflated half truths, Falmouth is and has been a decaying rotting town for the past 30yrs, my office stands on Market St in a once beautiful Georgian era building which is basically a deathtrap now, allowed to deterioate (along with 90% of the other historical sites) by their owners, any development is much needed in this once grand and for too long neglected town!!
@truthhurtz8 that is a load of crap. Like all of these other empty promises defacing our north coast. The high value jobs are given to foreigners and the revenue leaves Jamaica. This will also bring untold congestion as well as water lockoffs to that town to that town. Almost nothing is being done to ensure that Falmouth can support a development of that size. As with the mega hotels, this cruise ship terminal is completely out of context for this location.
No... no.... This development, while it may bring about a better situation than is present now in the short term, long term feasibility for the maintenance and upkeep of such an investment is so ridiculously far over Jamaica's head it ain't funny. It's also a fact that caribbean islands stand to gain little to nothing from increased landings by tourists on cruise ships. Caribbean people need to take responsibility for their resources nd not whore them off to foreign investors for any old price.
I would really like to know what motive lies behind this nicely produced video. Ironically, the last part of the video pans past Falmouth as it is today -- abandoned, forgotten, decrepit. The huge changes coming will, of course, bring both bad and good. The hope is that the people who are directly involved, i.e. people who actually live and work in Falmouth, will take lessons learned from the lost opportunities of MoBay and Ocho Rios. Hmm...pissed off Montegoians and Ochorians = mean video??
@fista10000 This video is NOT stretching the truth, for God's sake. People really ARE being displaced in Jamaica. Can you not think for yourself, independently, and get some sense of environmental problems in the Caribbean and in Jamaica especially? This video is painfully accurate - it is ALL true.
This video is not true, I was in Falmouth recently and the development that is taking place there is going to be worth it. I know this. Though some people are going to be displaced, I am not sure where they will be relocated.
Falmouth is nice, I grew up there and since I have been there, I have not seen any interest to develop the place (until now), so that the people can benefit.
As it stands now, Falmouth looks like garbage, and I am glad it is being attended to. Enough said!
Yamoja is WRONG! S/he lives in US, Bronx precisely &is involved in fashion. Falmouth is 1 of only 2 Jamaican towns of historic importance left. I know it's going to look historic when the're done but it' will be Disney World. Styrofoam & Plastic. You can't dredge a new biggest cruise ship harbor & NOT destroy reefs. Y It is not horrific a cruise is coming, it is horrific we do not insist the environment not be polluted. Dubai is doing it NOW! on their latest project that is larger & ALL in sea.
This video is a peice of false trash, no cruise ship in the world can dump "grey water" or sewage into the ocean, the willlose their licenses. Please stop creating a scenario where the sky is falling because it is not! BY the way the port isbeing built by three investors jamaica being the smallest... Environmentally friendly people should also be literate and concious of what they read. Does Falmouth have UNESCO status? why didnt Ms Figuero apply for it before plans were set in place? CRAP!
@valchrisg, This video is false, unfounded, unfactual and makes a lot of foolish remarks and references which are inaccurate. I personally detest Royal Caribbean, as I worked with them for many years, but I have to speak the truth when I know it. No Coral Reefs Were destroyed and Jamaica is carrying less of the burden and will gain significant revenue and no dumping of raw sewage takes place. I am also Jamiaca, and work closely in tourism marketing..this is crap!
@Yamoja16 I dove those reefs from start to completion of this project, they cut through the best part of the reef, and while most of the coral was relocated before that, many of those relocated corals were destroyed by the massive plume of silt generated by the cutter suction dredge used to dredge the hard bottom areas. To say that no coral reefs were destroyed is a flat out lie.
..............and have you noticed any major developments other than that its now pretty? Falmouth never new the phrase 'traffic jam' before- all roads led to ware or out... now you have to mind all those one ways and streets.
