Wow, I remember when I first heard this song, and record compilation I had only been saved for about three months, someone shared it with me and I played it all the time. God bless thanks for posting.
I love Esther Rolle as an actress. Especially the early stuff like DOn't play us cheap. I really haded to see her in the last role she had when she was the alzhiemers patient. I just have a problem watching her in that role.
A while ago, I posted some songs from DON'T PLAY US CHEAP, a stage play that Esther Rolle was in, as well as Mable King and a few others. I'm uncertain of whether you've seen it before, but there are a couple of tracks where she's 'singing.'
@MsTexas73: Yes, I do. Mabel King, Rhetta Hughes, Avon Long, & Joe Keyes, among other people were in the play. It came out in 1972. I used to have it on VHS and then I saw a used DVD copy. You may be able to find DON'T PLAY US CHEAP for a reasonable price.
Not eally because maya never has got on stage to sing or perform like este. I have always felt that este accurately represented african american women of the days of ole like harriot tubman or a modern day african american woman facing every day struggles and hardships. Isn't maya just a book author??
I think she is just an author. She was in TP's movie. I can not remember the title, but the one where the woman was supposed to get married and she didn't but her sister did. She was speaking in the wedding. Maya is also a speaker but moreso a poet. That's what I was referring too voice wise.
You just made my day! I have been looking for this song for years. My Great-Grandmother had the album and would play it all the time. I have had people argue with me that Esther Rolle never recorded any music. Thanks for helping me with the memories and also giving me the upper hand in the debate.
@soulreservoir She had her own album, "The Garden of My Mind" released in 1975. It was spoken word type peformances like this. In fact, this song may be on it since the album was recorded for the same Savoy label.
My mom had this on cassette and use to play it all the time when I was growing up. Talk about some memories. My mom and Esther had a lot in common, including diabtes. Esther was definitely the household mother figure for all.
I have been blessed to own the complete seasons and there is none better. These I proudly watch with my grandchildren. RIP Esther...You were/are loved. Thanks for the memories. Thanks to the poster of this video.
Thanks for posting this. It feels good to remember Esther this way. For many of us she was our maternal role model in entertainment. I interviewed her just before her death & she told me she never had any problem portraying maids on the big or small screen. "There is respect in all jobs," she told me. Now that's a class act.
She was a humble, yet talented soul. She was like everybody's mother. She was mamma Evans to many African Americans who at that time were still struggling to understand. May God rest her soul.
You're welcomed! Yes, all of the other cast members, for the most part, are still living. Unless you count the other characters, like Helen Martin, who played Wanda, the funeral-going neighbor they had the rent party for. Helen Martin died in the late 90's also.
one of my all time favorites.

Thanks again from another greatful youtuber, i've all but inshrined the 8 track tape that contains this song.
Esther Rolle has a warm loving voice in all that she does. that kind of voice that says "Mother"
and it was refreshing though now surprised she
would be featured on a gospel track.
Thanx again.
