  • Just what I would expect from someone wearing jeans and a tank top singing an Italian aria. Smh

  • Maybe she should get a vocal instructor who can teach her about breath support and appogio.

  • Ok so she has a pretty voice but not for classical music. She needs to finish her phrases and not cut words to take a breath. Also that random riff wasnt needed, it just threw me off .

  • i hate when my vocal coach says this....but her vowels sound like shit. it has its moments but mostly it's just not classically correct at all so i don't like it whatsoever

  • something wrong with your ears if you think this is ok??????????????

  • wow totally unexpected

  • I love that she has to use a microphone......

  • I like the idea but is far from the classical way of singing... and I don't like it.

  • Is there anything Jewel can't sing?

  • @appletinihamshire yes, lasciatemi morire, and every other classical piece known to man.

  • this is cool!

  • She is a pop singer. It's not her job to get all the pronunciations down. She did a beautiful job and put this wonderful piece of music out to the public eye. I have been performing this piece for years now. I love it with all my being and I am completely happy that someone as talented and well-known as Jewel has performed it and did it justice. Stop hating on her over tiny things. There is nothing worse than a music snob.

  • @teemarieish If it isnt her job to get all the pronounciations down, perhaps she should stick to her job then, and stop butchering classical music...

  • I agree with Desigovia. She is not saying, 'Look at me, I can sing this as well as anyone'; she is saying, 'This is glorious, gorgeous music that is worth singing at any time and by anyone, because it - and singing it - means something'.

  • Great Song and Voice. Poor Choice in Clothing.

  • @Ambassador45 talk about materialistic. But thats just me.

  • @jadebluek She was performing in her own show. It would have been silly for her to dress up for this one song. I've been to a number of her shows and her audience truly appreciate the different flavors she adds to her performances. Jewel's a great entertainer :)

  • beatifully done but you'd think she'd at least respect it and everyone by wearing something a little more for the occassion rather than what she wore, like she was at a farm or something.

  • @Jadebluek farm lolooooollll

  • Remind me again why she's famous?

  • @ThisIsARomCom Because you're not.

    Happy to help!

  • Mmmmm.

I'm just not sure how I feel about this.

Pronunciation's off, and the dynamics are all kinds of crazy.

At the same time, it's a pretty tone, and if I didn't know any better- I probably would have liked it fine.

    Mmmm.

  • @ItsStillSunny Feel free to upload you singing a cover of this, I'm sure we'd all love to hear it, and you'd be overjoyed to get the same reception.

  • @Phoaenix I'm not entirely certain as to how you meant that, but I'm going to assume you meant well. If I were to post my version of this song, I would definitely welcome a constructive compliment.

  • i don't really like her pronunciation, but her voice is so sweet that it doesn't really matter lol.

  • Okay, I've listened to renditions by Pavorotti and Carreras and others. Jewel's performance remains my absolute favorite.

  • I'm no stranger to the clasical repertoire, yet this is my first encounter with this peice. Quite frankly Jewel gives a wonderful performance here.

  • she's so versatile! just saw her interpretation of cole porter's anything goes. o.o

  • Delightful...

  • @leschopenhauer: Yes, outside her genre but my feelings too, simply delightful...

  • This song is tough, She did good with what her voice can carry out with this classic.

Una donna molto bella cantando una canzone molto bella

  • i wish she would of dressed up more for this. other than that great singing!

  • I mean she isn't classically trained at all, but props to her for trying something outside of the pop realm. Classical singing feels great when it's done right!

  • @Baitjim Actually, a college friend of mine attended Interlochen with Jewel where she trained in opera.

  • @mrn37 That's really interesting, thank you for that fact.

  • Maybe not the most technically precise interpretation, its so wonderful to see mainstream artists like Jewel exposing such wonderful music to audiences who would have otherwise neglected it to give it a second look.

  • is this in italian? or is it german...?

  • @AbiRaquel It's sung in Italian.

  • The orchestral accompaniment is absolutely beautiful.

  • what a s..is this?

She sings horrible this air and she did not understand this text al all

  • Wow, I totally got additional respect for Jewel for attempting this song. I always liked her unique voice and style and was shocked when I searched for this song and her video popped up! Good for her to trying it, and sure, she isn't singing it like an opera singer would, but I think her voice is much more beautiful and trained than people give her credit (probably due to the style of her songs). I'm classically trained and this song is no piece of cake to sing. Go Jewel!

  • Who cares if she is not classical trained or whatever the fuck...UNDOUBTELY, she is one of the best singer of OUR generation and we should respect for what she does...country, classical, pop, folk, yodel, whatever...she is TALENTED and she doesnt required autotune on her records...this is for STRAWBERRYGALORE and KE6GWF...quit been critical...at least she is on TV, and you are not! THANK U

  • She really kicked it for a non classically trained singer . awesome. but who knows she just may have some classical training . WOW, I remember singing this many years ago among many others. I still love classical music, Awesome . :)

  • She's good, but it really pissed me off that she was dressed in a tank top and jeans when everyone else is wearing suits.

  • I hated this song cause the choir I'm in learned it

  • all these "experts" on how it sounds so bad, she dont hold her mouth right or her breathing is wrong. but none of these people post their own video of this song. where is it? the only thing i can say to you haters is, Shut it!! or post a video.

  • @struckync you were pretty bold on your comment about telling haters to shut it or post a video. And your so right! I appreciate your comment.

  • she cant even sing the first phrase in one breath.... boring

  • @krisdahllie Really? Lets see you do this song better than her dude...LOLOL..... You're a dipshit...lol

  • I hate that she sounds like a little girl then holds her voice in her throat at other times and I don't feel like she ever sounds like she is supposed to in order to sing opera. blech!

  • @StrawberryGalore

lol, I laugh in your general direction!

You seem to be criticizing a singer messing up a song and not realizing that the things you are complaining about are the very difficult vocal stylings of a great singer.

Go listen to "Who will save your soul".

She doesn't sing "properly", which is what makes her so refreshing to listen too.

Complain all you want, but she is still better than you! :)

  • @ke6gwf Um, actually I've been trained and it's not that difficult to not sound like a three year old. honestly, I don't know how she got a record deal.

  • @StrawberryGalore

If you have been trained and can not understand how she got a record deal for singing folk and pop music, then you should maybe try exposing yourself to some training that does not involve sticks shoved anywhere! :)

I think she did a great job on this song, but then I am not trying to compare her to Pavarotti!

Music is about a lot more than skill and training, it's about conveying emotion to the listener, and Jewel is very good at that. I am sorry can't just enjoy music.

  • Respond to this video... it takes a certain type of person to sing opera. she is not one of them. I took this song to contest and got everything in the 1 section. If you don't know what that means its superior. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to music.

  • @StrawberryGalore

I don't think she was singing opera!

She was singing an aria that is from an opera but is a perfectly legitimate song by itself. This is a pretty common occurrence among non-opera singers by the way.

As with any singer and song, each performer sings the song according to their own style. (and I happen to prefer her style to Pavarotti, but that is just preference. Same as your dislike for her!)

Oh, before I forget, here's your stick back! ;-)

  • @StrawberryGalore obviously you don't... she was amazing number one... and number two, this is might be from an opera but she still did amazing on it... Jewel has an amazing voice. Maybe you should take it from someone who is not only trained in music but sings for a living.

  • @StrawberryGalore wow, you're SO cool.

  • why does this exist?

  • I love that jewel did this song the only negative thing i have to say is she took breaths where she didnt need to if it were being judged they would take points off for it. I have been auditioning for NH All State festivals for four years and this is my final year and I am so excited to finally be doing this song because it rotates around every four years so it's finally my turn for it... anyone who is working on this go ahead and kick butt on it cause i know you can do!!!!!

  • @kbjbforever me too! i live in salem and i'm going to be auditioning (: hope to see you there!

  • ugh this annoys me! this a such a wonderful piece that was sung so poorly! She has terrible phrasing, and breath right in the middle of a word! Also pay attention to the dipthong, its supposed to be voglio-a, not just voglio. no offense to jewel but she should dtick to her type of music, i am 14 and i can honestly say that even i can pick up on her mistakes. GET PROPER CLASSICAL TRAINING BEFORE YOU INSIST ON DOING THESE TYPES OF SONGS!!!! peoples these days know nothing about breath support, god!

  • @kat8rawr I couldn't agree more

  • @kat8rawr yeah todays music is so sad to listen to:P She doesn`t even follow the score. Luckily there still are serious people that listen to serious singers and pay for serious, beautiful and sincere music.

  • youre right she does has a beautiful voice, however, she is pronouncing the words wrong and singing the wrong notes and her breathing is SO off. this is not her song. period.

  • jewel is a lovely performer, and i believe that she can have a very nice voice on country music, however i reallydont like her voice on classical music, let me explain y...

    1) she has terrible breath support+breathes in the middle of the phrases

    2) she sounds like a little kid, tone is very staight, there is no color to her voice

3)voglio, as opposed to the correct voglio-a dipthong thingie

    4) there is no good classical traing evident in her performance

SHE SHOULD STICK TO HER TYPE OF MUSIC

  • I don't understand why she insists on performing classical repertoire. Whoever is giving her classical voice lessons obviously isn't studying the music with her.

    1. She breathes in the middle of a phrase, where any self-respecting voice student could carry.

    2. She doesn't follow the elisions in the music "voglio" vs. "voglio-a."

    3. Her portamento is completely out of the style of the era of the piece.

    Stick to country.

  • Jewel has actually studied opera at a reputable music school in Michigan so this is just a reflection of how truly talented this woman is!

  • this is horrible.

  • @umroo2014 wrong!

  • at the end, my sheet music says care, care...

    not luci care. :/

    hmmmm.

    :/

  • @emmyxjosaphene in the new edition that they're using for high schoolers all-state this year, it's supposed to be care care. luci care is the old standard.. that's why there are like no videos with care care.

  • @emmyxjosaphene : my sheet music says "luci care", so it probably just depends on the version.

  • I have been taking voice for over two years and just started studying this song...it is totally kicking my butt, and im classically trained. XP. I totally applaud Jewel for doing this. She kicked some serious butt with it!

  • The song, of course is good , but not forher..., no emotion, nothing... get another!

  • I wouldnt kick her out of bed for eating crackers! Unexpected from her...she is a true talent. To expect her to nail whatever the hell that was is secondary to her unbelievable accomplishments! She is iconic!

  • This is the my first time hearing Per la Gloria. I think it is amazing. Everyone rips on Jewel when she sings classical, saying her breathing is messed up. You high browers just save your breath and admit that she has a beautiful voice.

  • @epatullo I'm a classical singer and her breathing is messed but she has perfect support so I don't really care lol her technique is off but it's the sound that comes out that matters! It's absolutely true that her voice is beautiful lmao I sang this once and it's really hard so good for her!

  • @epatullo by saying she doesn't breathe right isn't ripping on her. You can be an amazing singer, but if you don't breathe right it takes a lot more work to support the high notes. She does breathe a little high, but she's better than many in that area anyway.

  • I like, it's sweet! :)

  • hmm, this song sounds like it needs a deeper tone coming from the point of view that it is a song about suffering for love, i'd just adore it if she made taller vowels but for a folk/pop singer, hey it was pretty great.

  • wonderful song !!

  • beautiful song

  • (start: counting with the head?)

well its something experimental, done for fun, and not even close to what it needs, and i think everyone knows that, including her.

  • At least she had the good sense to recognise what a beautiful song this is and to give it a go even if the result was not up to the standard of Sutherland or Pavarotti.

At last Bononcini's great aria has been given exposure to a greater audience.

  • Jewel makes beautiful music--even when she's out of her element.

  • She should stick to folk, pop, etc... Singing classical music is not as simple as just "singing."

  • The people who are "dogging" her are the people who have actually had formal training in classical singing. And I agree with everything they're saying. I am normally a modest person, but I sing this song better than her.

  • wow! all of you guys dogging her, where is your version of this song?

  • What the hell is this?! Not everyone can do both classical and pop singing. It's out of the question that she could be one of the desirables.

  • I think i just threw up a little

  • haha her diction is pretty bad too

  • Her Voice was all in her throat and pushed, for a classical piece, it has to be really low and deep, a darker sort of tone. You have to be trained to sing songs like these, not anyone can sing classical pieces >.>

  • @pikaxmaster this is try i igree

  • suck

  • I think Carolyn sounds better in: "Per la gloria d'adorarvi CAROLYN".

  • I love it when contemporary artists try to sing classical voice songs. They just display how untrained and studio dependent their voices are ! I felt a breeze blowing through my hair from all the breathe.

  • She is singing through her nose.

  • it would be ok for like a sophomore in college. there's nothing wrong with the voice her technique just needs work.

  • its okay.

  • A song about loving someone and them never loving you back...and she's smiling the whole time! hahaha

And. An italian person wouldn't understand a damn thing she said. Just saying. Why are you doing opera?

    Oh well. She's famous. Whatever.

  • terrible

  • you´re right she needs to get a latin lover to feel the blood boiling inside... ( is that asma?)

  • too many breathes,

    weird pronounciation,

and she added some notes in

to try to make it sound better.

  • Delightful indeed, she masters tremolo, very rare in vocal performances. She definitely relishes signing opera, her eyes glow when she performs such and I think this style of signing is in her soul.

  • @Miradadulce1 I am terrified to even imagine what it would mean to sing tremolo... (that would be a term strictly reserved for string players)

  • i love jewel, but she is not meant to sing opera. she has a lovely voice, it's just doesn't work for this kinda music.

  • Whoa! This is different!!!!

    Nice :)

  • Jewel originally trained in Opera - it's good to hear the other side of her!

  • @Marmalade000000 Going to Interlochen for two years doesn't count as being a classically trained singer. This "other side" of hers is long dead... she's just in denial.

  • @Marmalade000000

    Well if that is true,

she didn't train near enough !

  • I'll admit it's not perfect, but I think it's a beautiful performance. There are certainly better singers, but how can you not love Jewel?! At least she's brave enough to perform something she's not known for!

  • I don't know technically if it's perfect or not, what I know is that she has an excelent control of her voice and the result is purely beautiful

  • pretty voice. but if she's gonna do an aria...she should pay closer attention to her technique.. love the descent at 1:34 though.

  • what amazes me is that everyone on here acts like they're experts on what a good aria is suppose to sound like. LOL. I think she sounds beautiful

  • She has a good voice color, but the singing is merely mediocre. This is an aria, not a song.

  • @JulieEleonore dude...aria means song.

  • i have been listening to a ton of "per la gloria"(s) and i personally LOVE it :)

  • She sounds very nice but it loks like she spent more time on her face then her voice.

  • @zoey1905 you sound like you spend more time sitting on your brains

  • she doesn't pronounce her words!!

    But lovely voice

  • at least some pop singers realize there are other great genres out there. i'm glad she challenged herself - cool. There are some problems in there but that descending melisma is cool.

  • tooth distracts me, lol

  • lol, best comment ever.

  • She sings better then me nonetheless :P

But my teeth are better formed.

Naww, I went below the belt out of jealousy :<

  • BRAVO!

  • no need to say how much talent she has.

    great singer, great personality

  • i think she has awesome control of her voice. she sounds amazing and no training just god given talen. can everyone say bravo!!!!!

  • What do you mean no training? She went to Interlochen...

  • Comment removed

  • Oh give it a break with the criticism. She didn't get famous to sing opera. This is a display of her ability to do it at all. Those who sing opera practice technique for YEARS....of course its not going to be perfect. Why don't any of you post a video in response that is "better", and let that make your point.

  • It doesn't showcase her ability to do it all if she can't do it though. It is just a bad representation of this art form

  • I love jewel... but not this. Opera is just not her thing

  • Personally, I love this side of Jewel....I think she sounds brilliant, and with some more training cshe could have gone into classical music!!

  • Does it not bother anybody that she left out an entire section, she pronounces "r" in "per" like she's from the country, and her phrasing!? Holy crap. Let Jewel be Jewel the pop star. Not the opera amateur.

  • heh.

    that was pretty goood.

but i don't think some of the ways she pronounces the words sound good.

  • i agree. It's pretty but some of her pronunciations of the vowels are off and she doesn't always roll her "r"s, things like that. so I guess, like the opinion from the comment above this one states, it's either sing it right or don't sing it at all since it's clearly getting complaints from either side: fans of her usual material, and people who study vocal arts or are at least somewhat knowledgeable about the subject.

  • besides. She yodels, uses a scratchy soulful sounding voice plus this amogst others. that deserves credit. that much voice control and to perform all of that in a concert and end on an opera is quite amazing and talented. so stuff that down your throats

  • To those posting negative comments- anywhere in this video does she state that she is an opera singer?? NO! shes not claiming to be one so shut up. She's just perfoming the freaking song at the end of a full full concert. She can sing this song if she wants and she doesnt need rude asshole like all of you to judge her.

  • For classical music like this, I think whomever singing it needs a balance between the "cute" voice and the opera voice. This is 100% cute. Good for your high school talent show... but for Jewel? Just... don't. Haha.

  • She doesn't have the voice type to pull of a song like this. Most people are just not meant to sing classically. There's nothing wrong with it, she should just stick to her style.

  • She is pretty good, but i didn't like the fall after the held note near the end.

  • Amazing. Jewel and Queen Latifah should do an opera album together. I was blown away by how well Queen Latifah can sing listening to her jazz albums. They could do duets with Jewel singing the soprano parts and Queen Latifah singing the alto parts.

  • Touche! Ditto. Anyone who is posting negative comments about her need to get their ears checked. She is gorgeous. Perfect. I am amazed by her versatility as a performer.....folk, rock, country, jazz, broadway, classical and opera.

  • WOW . A lot of talk from people NOT getting paid , better yet PAYING to be like her. she is not an opera singer BUT she got PAID to sing it. SO whats the difference between you and her .."about 5 bank accounts 3 houses and 2 vehicles".(xzibit) SO while you are out there in diapers..or shall I say school, camp, whatever paying money .. to try and make money off your voice .. GL WITH THAT .respect those who are making money . I think it is just as beautiful as she is. SO take that to the BANK

  • @twampthing Florence Foster Jenkins made money to sing. Look her up. She's special too.

  • Comment removed

  • Pretty bad, both her singing and her diction. My favourite bit is watching her nod her head as she counts in at the beginning -- I get the feeling she missed her entrance a few times during rehearsals :)

  • sounds like a high school girl singing it.

  • a high schooler who got paid...where is your video response with better??? how much did you get paid for your version????????

  • Florence Foster Jenkins got paid to sing too.

  • HAHAHA Nice!!!!

  • a little nasal for my taste...what the heck is she doing pieces like this???

  • @ChantantReve

I absolutely agree with you a 100%. I am sure that she sings very well in other genres, but she simply doesn't have the skill for these types of songs.

  • Lodevole la scelta dell'aria di Bononcini!

    Gradevole l'interpretazione!

    Piacevole la voce!

In questo mondo di immondizie pseudomusicali, ripeto,un vivo grazie a questa Ninfa che degno' attenzione alla Musica Barocca!!!

  • Her voice sounds thin and tight, especially on the top note. And where's the trill? I like some of Jewel's early work. But this repetoire isn't for her --

  • word she is breathing in all the wrong places. this is the second aria i learned ever so i'm a bit disapointed. the first one i learned as a 9th grader was lasciatemi morire talk about depressing start to high school

  • Joan Sutherland - Per la gloria - G B Bononcini

  • argh! :/

  • fa pena!!!

  • this song needs operatic qualities to the voice, i don't think this song suits her voice. ...

i'm doing this for my grade 8 :)

  • Agreed. I'm doing this for my grade 7 with Trinity XD

  • wow guys. Im doing this for high school .

  • haha great voice. WHAT no second verse? she did a very unique job with it not bad by any means but that weird little slide thing at the end was just terrible =p. Jewel rocks nuff said.

  • her voice isn't bad....her technique is.

  • i cant stand her voice and she mist deffinatly cant sing opera. her pronounciation isnt good at all.

  • it sounds okay...

But her voice REALLY isnt suited for opera.

Her breathing and placement sort of stink.

I mean, wasnt she trained at interlochen? i was expecting a little better..... its okay though.

  • yeah, interlochen IS better than her...

i'm going, and people there are better than her..

  • I actually know someone whose going to interlochen next year :)

I actually go to a preforming arts program :D (for Vocal )

Have you heard her try to sing Lasciatemi Morire?

    It's GRUESOME.

  • academy or camp?

    2009 or 2010?

    ill be at camp 2009

and I am no fan of Lasciateme Morire

    LEAVE ME TO DIE(translation)

i like what it is written about(Theseus and Ariadne) but the actual music i dont like...

  • Academy 2010.

I was assigned the song, so i sort of forced myself to like it.

But she butchers it. Nearly makes the whole song a major key.

  • ah cool! ill be at academy next year too, and i heard a couple people sing Lasciatemi Morire this summer at the camp, and they did it really well. that song is really easy to kill, it was cool to see people do it well!

  • good for a pop singer

  • this is definitely NOT what Per la gloria d'adorarvi is supposed to sound like - this is not italian!!!! (the way you're singing it!!!)

  • That was beautiful! :)

  • wow, she really sucks !
