Wow.. people really seem to be treating you harshly regarding this video... I just searched the D1 as it was the first BIG digital DSLR we used in mid 1999... a blast from the past. It's interesting to me that you posted this in 2010, what prompted you to buy one? We filled the cards back then at 4gigs... fyi, we used them in the Navy when they first came out. Keep shooting and I wish you well with your photography. Ignore the haters, you're doing GREAT!
Come on give the kid a break. I think that this camera is a good camera even if it's more than 10 years old. The only thing I dislike on this camera is the banding noise patter which is aparent at ISO's higher than 800 and the weight. I wish my Canon rebel had the framerate of this camera and the wide bright viewfinder that this camera posses. D1 has 4,5 mine has only 3 :)
Im glad this turd got a en-v touch to make this video about his mommies Camera I'm sure he wouldn't know what an aperture even is or how high the iso settings go. lol
@npiller11 Aperture? Thats how much light the lens is letting in to the camera. Iso? 16,000 max. I also recorded this on my kodak easyshare. I also bought this camera with my hard earned money. I also know a thing or two about being respectful to people on youtube who haven't done anything to me. But you? Your just an inconsiderate asshole who should go back to playing with a polaroid and chewing on the photos that come out you baby.
Good job with the review kid. Don't worry about the flamers, most of them are just hating on you because you've got something they've never got, that is a passion for photography. They only have a passion for the gear, there's a clear difference. If you truly enjoy taking photos then stick with it, learn about photography and indeed also the science AND art behind creating a good photo, stick with it and you'll be a winner. And as the old quote goes;
i dont know why people focus equipment so much hes young and just getting into photography and this would be a good starter kit. if it is only equipment you worry about then your photography will more than likley be shit a good photographer could take a great image with any camera he is given regardless of its age.
@W4T5ON Jeez thanks dude! I can't tell you how much crap I get. This camera is the fastest shooting camera I own and it's quality is good enough, it's speed is fast enough and I've gotten GREAT images with it!
@Huffdev O and im getting 2 pro bodys because my dad is a pro photogapher and ive been taking pictures since i was little i started with a cheap film camera and my dad tought me and i got really really good shots with that camera it was only 30 dollars to so it is the photographer not the camera!!
omg why cant people see hes like 15 and hes saving up, and also if he gets used to one of these camera and get realy good pictures out of it imagine wat he could get out of a realy good pro camera :) good review btw :)
Waste of money when you can get a d40 or d60 for about the same price. Better having a simple camera which you know how to use than an old ass pro body with features you're never going to use when just taking pictures of your dog and firends on skateboards.
Having a Professional Camera doesn't automatically make you a PRO..
some of you call your self Professionals because you use a Professional Camera.. some of You only rely on the specs of your professional camera.. some of you might not even know how to choose the proper angle and creates a photo with a story..
Give me a D1, and I'll use it Professionally.. I don't care if it is old, I just need to maximize it's use..
so when this young adult bought that D1, its a good choice :) Enjoy shooting
@kdc111190 Thanks man, plus this one is in great condition. It is practically out of the box new! Most d1's on ebay are practically dead after being thrown around by careless photographer companies but this one is soooo nice.
@BlueFluidStudios Simple, it's less money. These D1's are literally indestructable, and before the smart@ss comes in and says "no its not" I'm just exaggerating. Mainly it's just cheaper and I don't have 500-1000 bucks. Remember I'm like 15 and I'm not just saving up for cameras. I just drained myself of my 450$ for a nice camcorder (canon gl1) and thats the most expensive thing I own in videography/photography! For those who think I'm spoiled think again! I buy everything myself!
The GL1 is 8 years old now, why don't you buy a new consumer camcorder as opposed to an older prosumer camcorder? Actually, If I were you I would sell your D1 and D70 and buy something like a D90 or D7000. They both cleary outdo the D1 in image quality and are much better than the Canon Gl1 video wise.
As much as people are gonna hate on this kid about technical stuff: yes, later cameras (including his D70) are superior in almost every way, but the D1 is *still* a beast. It was the first practical digital SLR ever made, which obsoleted film in the sports and photojournalism markets. Pick up any glossy sports magazine from around 2000 or 2001, and you'll see lots of shots done on a D1.
Hey, I'm just here for the shutter sounds (sounds GREAT too), but if anyone feels like lending me a D1... :)
@slyx94 Actually, take a look at the manual. He's closer than you are; it refers to what you call the "aperture dial" (which is what it would be in aperture-priority and fully-manual mode) as the "sub-command dial" and the "shutter dial" as the "main command dial". "Primary" and "secondary", as I recall, is what Nikon's later literature calls it too.
You guys are a bunch of assholes. Leave the kid alone. Nothing wrong with older gear. Yeah, it's low-tech by todays standards but it's built like a tank. Congrats kid, that thing looks mint.
Also to everyone...us here in the west pronounce it "NY-CON"...ok...so live with it and stfu!
@ferrarinurd Omfg, I get that its like fricken old but jesus I'm saving MONEY. OBVIOUSLY I DONT NEED A PRO D3X CAMERA SINCE PEOPLE SEEM TO HATE ALL OF MY VIDEOS!
@NikonandCanon96 hey man who the fuck cares about what they say they are just trying to fit in to the oooooohhhhh im a big pppwwwwoooooo!!!! photographer i need a d3x do what you want man keep the vids comin they are awesome.
I mean I have a D7000 and some fast lenses so I dont need it for actual photography but heck sometimes its fun to go old school and see how people used to work with
Im only 17 so i dont remember much of this stuff, let alone I wouldhve cared
I would want one just to say I have it and use it for fun
I love using my old Canon av-1 and ive gotten great shots on it
Just remember it's not always the equipment. Though equipment is important duh, but once you have a camera, flash, and a set of lenses you can work your way up to getting equipment that gives you higher quality. But hey no matter what it's digital so you can do a bit.
nice man. dont listen to these guys. you dont need an up to date camera to be professional. i have the same camera and will take out most photographers photographs with their D3's.
@nfaguade Did I say I was pro? No. Did I just get the camera that day and was I still learning about it? Yes. Are you unecessarily flaming? 100%. I'm 15, have 3 years of experience. I'm not a pro I never said. That comment really shows you care about the photography community by flaming on someone whos innocently giving his opinion on a new camera. And obviously the d70 is better. This is faster and cheaper. Flamers these days......Never gets old!
@nfaguade Yes I have. So stop bugging me about it. Just because I called it the optics selector doesn't mean I don't know how to use the thing. Thanks nfaguade for your wonderful flaming today. I think I've gotten my dose of flaming for the whole week.
@nfaguade That honestly made no sense so yeah. I'll enjoy the brick alot actually. I'm actually smart to realize it's not crap rather than a mint condition item that takes decent photos for what I need. Thanks though troll.
@HelloNewYorkCity I agree with you about the buying a cheap lens, however I think he can't really afford a good lens obviously because he has a D1 which you can get for 200 bucks. I have a D1 and I have these cheap lenses but I'm very poor. But regardless I love what I do. I'm pushing for a D2H and hopefully a 70-200mm f2.8G that or the cheaper 80-200 f2.8D. But man I still remember using my old N2000, I still got that beauty.
@HelloNewYorkCity the kid doesn't have 700 dollars. this d1 cost only 200 bucks even less actually. and where could he have gotten any lens for free because tell me so i can get some because i can't even afford to put in a tank of gas. but anyways it wouldn't really matter to me as long as the kid is taking pictures thats what matters. personally my setup for what i do and my needs are 70-200mm nikkor vr f2.8G and a nikon d2h. it's a dreamy pair. anyways he's 13 and im 18 and i can't afford this
@HelloNewYorkCity I have other lenses this one I got for about a dollar on ebay so I was trying it out! If I use af the motor practically grinds up the lens so I have to use manual.
@HelloNewYorkCity You must be pretty emotional considering it's a video of a camera with a lens on it and me reviewing it. Lol, what did you think of the titanic?
Just curious. Why purchase an 11 year old 2.74 Mega Pixel camera, which can only reach 1600 ISO - which contains massive amounts of noise - you should have gotten a new lens, or something upgrading you from the D70. Not saying they're bad cameras, just to be updated in the digital age, and in quality terms.

It's not about the tools you used. It's about the photographer that matters..
But I'd still have to give bad critiques about you boy.
Because you name the parts wrongly.
It's not the primary dial OR secondary dial.
It's called the shutter dial AND aperture dial.
Eventually, I ended up seeing this video as a 'Just for Fun for Kids' video.. :)
