The Catholic victim in this song was "Young MacDonald", killed in retribution for the killing of Protestant Isaac.
Now MacDonald is the most Scots surname I can think of, yet he was murdered in this story by Loyalist paras, who claim to represent the Ulster-Scots people! Do you see?
Point is, there is NO ethnic difference, never has been, between those who we think of as "Native Irish" or "Scots-Planter", the whole Troubles were based on an illusion of difference that never existed!
I have to say how can this country be any other way when we have ass holes like FintyMAcC10 in it people like you should be rounded up and put in a commune were you cant hurt any one else and kill each other if you want to, we are sick of it lets live in the future not the past.
@FIntyMAcC10 Gone catch a grip of yourself! It's dicks like you that have this country the way it is. Judging by your grammar you should study English until you die.
There's even a cleverness to the names of the young boys in this, that's lost on most folk! The Prod was "Isaac" and the Taig "MacDonald", does no one see what what they did here?
Cara sends a message of love and a powerful song to stop the violence over religion difference,, this song sends that impact messagw ...love one another ....,great song

Yes. We should all follow the tolerance practices of the Germans. They of course have no history of killing people because they are of a different religion.

oh you got me wrong i know this is not political what i meant was should show politicians so they ( and us) can move on ie we should all get on with each other (sorry)
We were sitting talking about the wedding next year when a car drew up behind usWe didn't take any notice of it because I thought it was my brother coming home. Suddenly the door burst open and the gunmen, wearing masks, ordered Charles outThey told me to go inside and the last I saw of Charles was when they bundled him into the back seat of the car. He didn't do anybody any harm - what am I going to do without him?'
'This is for Isaac Scott.' The shooting took place not far from the Mayobridge home of Isaac Scott, who had been shot dead the previous month. Charles McDonnell's 18-year-old fiancée gave evidence at the inquest. She said: 'We went to bingo and had just got home at 11.30 p.m.
Charles J. McDonnell, Down. Civilian, Catholic, 20, single.
From Carrowmannon, Belleek, he was shot in the head and chest after being abducted by armed and masked UDA/UFF men from outside his fiancée's home. The couple were sitting in a car when the gang ordered him out, drove him a short distance away then shot him 11 times from close range. As the gunmen took him away they told his fiancée,
It emerged sometime after his death that Isaac Scott, who came from Mayobridge, was a former member of 3 UDR in Co. Down. His woman companion told the inquest she did not know if anyone in the bar knew he had been in the UDR or that he was a Protestant
It doesnt matter anymore there will be more roses but just white ones my love an amazing verson an amazing voice the past is the past nothing can change but we will make it better together x
its not about religion, republicans being catholic and brits being prodys is just a concidence. the war is between irish and brits, republicans and unionists, not f'n religion, which is a joke antways. people believing in imaginary gods!
I just heard this song for the first time.Myself being from Northern Ireland thinks this song should be played at all political meetings to remind us here that religion doesn't matter.
this song was originally written in 1974 by Tommy Sands about two mates of his who were killed i believe they were Sean o Malley a catholic and Allan bell his protestant friend...brilliant version by Cara though
To be honest I don't think it matters which incident it was originally written for, the point is there in the lyrics. My only wish is that one day it stops because I don't want to lose my friends and family over there because violence only leads to violence and where does that get us...? Nowhere!
Song is brilliant and so is her voice it really is frightening that this happened and probably not just once either, let's hope it never happens again
and still there is trouble and killing in the north. when will they ever learn that the grim reaper does not need a hand from you lot he does quite well enough on his own. how about a pact? grow old and die gracefully. eh!
Ireland the time for fighting is over there is only one way now. Peace talks, its a step to free ireland, thumbs up if you agree there is enough violence let there be no more !
It doesnt much matter in the argument, but the words are the most important and the fact that lives were lost in the process. I cannot begin to understand and you have to walk a mile in the shoes of the families that lost their boys before anyone can comment. My heart is sorry that songs have to be sung in order to remember people when they loose their life. Just be grateful its not our families that have to suffer the pain. ......
they plaed this in humanitiess cus we are doin about king henry the 8th and the catholic and prostant stuff its acc rhlii interestin, and when you listen to the lyrics its acc quite heart warming
@emys834 I don't think much of your humanities teacher if he/she thinks the Troubles in Northern Ireland are simply the result of Henry VIII's break with Rome. There is nothing heartwarming about murder. I come from Northern Ireland and murders happened on a daily basis. There were a lot of tears and, although this is a wonderful song, it takes more than a song to make up for the murders of more than 3,500 people.
@ahoghill54 what is it you want then! i think you want to wallow in the past, well i think you should look to the future but don't forget the fallen of both sides.
@kilnockboy You're completely wrong. One can be interested in history without wallowing in the past. I do look to the future and I haven't forgotten the victims. I don't know where you got that idea from!
this song is actually about Allan Bell and Sean O Malley it was written by Tommy Sands look it up it's a really good song this version is just a cover
@MissAlua, when characters in songs, poems and novels use the word 'I' it doesn't necessarily mean that the song/poem/novel is about them. The novel 'Black Beauty' is about a horse but the horse didn't write it, even though he appears to be the narrator.
Great song performed brilliantly, I am an ex soldier who did many tours of Northern Ireland, but i love the music and traditions of both the UK (NI) and the ROI
@mogden9569 I'm glad you can appreciate all that is good and beautiful about Ireland and the Irish and that your experiences in Northern Ireland have not spoiled that.
The conflict , the Ulster conflict, grew out of presecution based on religious following, The civil rights movement and its brutual treatment by the British government and army were the torch to iginite the flames. Religion perhaps the background but a struggle for equal rights was the reason for the conflict, Contented people never go to the streets!
@holl781 Religion did play a part as many people were conditioned to believe that the people of the other community were to be hated. The Catholic community was not represented in government and the police were institutionally sectarian. When Catholics protested peacefully they were beaten by the police. Many Catholic communities felt they had no-one to turn to except the IRA which, at the start of the Troubles in the late 1960s, was almost defunct.
@holl781 (continued) Once the IRA began to use violence Loyalist paramilitaries retaliated. In addition to that all the most evil and hate-filled men used the situation to indulge their love of killing and torturing people who were not from their community. Can I recommend a wonderful book by Susan McKay called 'Bear in Mind These Dead?'
The song recounts how Allan Bell, a Protestant friend of Sands, was murdered in a senseless act of violence in Newry. In the aftermath, a group of local Protestants "prowled round the Ryan Road" for a Catholic to kill in retaliation; ironically, the man they selected, Sean O'Malley, had been a good friend of the Protestant victim and also of Sands.Profound lyrics.
There Were Roses" is an Irish folk ballad written by Northern Irish singer, songwriter & storyteller, Tommy Sands. Lyrics are based on a real incident that took place in Northern Ireland in 1974.
my father sings this is he is a newfoundlander and every time i hear this i cry....its such a beautiful song but such a sad story.

Down. His woman companion told the inquest she did not know if anyone in the bar knew he had been in the UDR or that he was a Protestant

this song was originally written in 1974 by Tommy Sands about two mates of his who were killed i believe they were Sean o Malley a catholic and Allan bell his protestant friend...brilliant version by Cara though
johnnoelc 1 year ago
To be honest I don't think it matters which incident it was originally written for, the point is there in the lyrics. My only wish is that one day it stops because I don't want to lose my friends and family over there because violence only leads to violence and where does that get us...? Nowhere!

Does it really matter who the song is about all dat matters is the words nd how they speak the TRUTH...
TheresaQ93 1 year ago 2
It doesnt much matter in the argument, but the words are the most important and the fact that lives were lost in the process. I cannot begin to understand and you have to walk a mile in the shoes of the families that lost their boys before anyone can comment. My heart is sorry that songs have to be sung in order to remember people when they loose their life. Just be grateful its not our families that have to suffer the pain. ......

emys834 1 year ago
@emys834 I don't think much of your humanities teacher if he/she thinks the Troubles in Northern Ireland are simply the result of Henry VIII's break with Rome. There is nothing heartwarming about murder. I come from Northern Ireland and murders happened on a daily basis. There were a lot of tears and, although this is a wonderful song, it takes more than a song to make up for the murders of more than 3,500 people.

@ahoghill54 what is it you want then! i think you want to wallow in the past, well i think you should look to the future but don't forget the fallen of both sides.
kilnockboy 10 months ago
@kilnockboy You're completely wrong. One can be interested in history without wallowing in the past. I do look to the future and I haven't forgotten the victims. I don't know where you got that idea from!

MissAlua 2 years ago
@MissAlua, when characters in songs, poems and novels use the word 'I' it doesn't necessarily mean that the song/poem/novel is about them. The novel 'Black Beauty' is about a horse but the horse didn't write it, even though he appears to be the narrator.

in my opinion the conflicts wern't religious conflicts, that's what the began as they were political battles
a very touching sing and i hope in the years to come we can make more progress and strive for peace
holl781 2 years ago 2
The conflict , the Ulster conflict, grew out of presecution based on religious following, The civil rights movement and its brutual treatment by the British government and army were the torch to iginite the flames. Religion perhaps the background but a struggle for equal rights was the reason for the conflict, Contented people never go to the streets!
godstargodstar 2 years ago 2
@holl781 Religion did play a part as many people were conditioned to believe that the people of the other community were to be hated. The Catholic community was not represented in government and the police were institutionally sectarian. When Catholics protested peacefully they were beaten by the police. Many Catholic communities felt they had no-one to turn to except the IRA which, at the start of the Troubles in the late 1960s, was almost defunct.
ahoghill54 11 months ago
@holl781 (continued) Once the IRA began to use violence Loyalist paramilitaries retaliated. In addition to that all the most evil and hate-filled men used the situation to indulge their love of killing and torturing people who were not from their community. Can I recommend a wonderful book by Susan McKay called 'Bear in Mind These Dead?'
ahoghill54 11 months ago
The song recounts how Allan Bell, a Protestant friend of Sands, was murdered in a senseless act of violence in Newry. In the aftermath, a group of local Protestants "prowled round the Ryan Road" for a Catholic to kill in retaliation; ironically, the man they selected, Sean O'Malley, had been a good friend of the Protestant victim and also of Sands.Profound lyrics.
