did you replace the optical drive? that would be where i would have started in the diagnoses. the follow down the line sata/ide cable the powersupply, the maybe the board. sothing was related to that hardware somewhere doing that. i hope you fixed it lol.
@alpaljl me neither. i also had no issues with 2000 pro or xp sp3. vista i wouldn't even pirate as every machine i've seen, i wasn't impressed with including a wipe/install. (hp or compaq athlon x64 i forget the exact model, 2 gigs of dd2) fairly new machine at the time. even after getting rid of the bloat ware, it wasn't a greatly reliable machine.

it's HP so there's a surprize, I never got the BSOD on Vista or had any problems with it at all.
