I think the problem is in the name. Why should we have a nation called the United States of America, a continent called North America, another continent called South America and a linguistic region called Latin America? The two continents are on separate tectonic plates that were once very much separated from one another. It is all too confusing and complicated. I know some people are sensitive to the word America, as most Canadians, I could care less about the word 'America'. Create new ones.

Prior to 1951, the official handbook of the Olympic Games stated that each colour corresponded to a particular continent: blue for Europe, yellow for Asia, black for Africa, green for Oceania and red for America, but it also says that this was removed later.
