  • The Best I ever heard. PERFECT!

  • Kenny "waltered" Just dropped in and sung it like a parody !

  • Thanks to @szkajt for putting down the chords for these songs, check out the video info for them.

  • Download this session from the link in the video info above.

  • ...love the symbol of the willow tree.

  • I miss Mickey...He's incredible and always will be...

  • @johnny576375 i bought it from iTunes on Winter Winds. I love Willie Nelson's version of it and can't get it out of my head.

  • I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in

I found my mind in a brown paper bag, but then...

I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high

I tore my mind on a jagged sky

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

  • Mindblowing. A storm. Unmatchable. A planet on his own. Mr. Newbury is an emperor of the word, an inhabitant of mood, genre and feeling, a tormented king. A bulldozer of gut and wrenched emotion. With all of that he was a solid platform for many US artists in both rock and country music. His music is universal, his significance existential, beauty for eternity. I hope he's having a ball somewhere. To his graceful family: much warmth. Buy the albums at their website. A grateful Belgian filmmaker.

  • great

  • Bob who ?

  • Everytime I hear this it just kicks my ass.

  • KNO is a hero

  • Perception, infinity, borderline sanity; it's all there. Makes you contemplate and perhaps understand more, and appreciate, ones small part in existence. From my essence, I thank Mickey for this gift of a track. "The son of Divinity can only be contemplated through the smoked glass of humanity". I believe we have glimpsed brilliance.

  • Pure magic, Mickey. I will always love this man. He is so natural. I miss him so much.

  • these are the best lyrics ive ever heard. this song is epic, and ill never be able to hear any version other than this one

  • Absolutely amazing - so powerful! Had this song on my ipod for ages (Kenny Rogers version) and loved it. Didn't know it was a cover version of this sublime original by Mickey Newbury. Played this pretty much two days solid it got to me that much!

  • Mickey once said the songwriter that influenced him more than anyone else was Townes Van Zandt. You can hear similar genius in the dark lyrics of this recording Mickey did of his own song.

  • Should, really, be essential listening to to anyone who believes they may be able to write lyrics and put them to tunes that others might find move them in some way. Absolutely wonderful.

  • I've loved Mickey Newbury's music since 1969, but this amazing performance gives me chills.

  • Amazing! Some chilling moments in this version.

  • feel...danger.....perfect.....soooo...perfect!!! x

  • Kenny Rogers says Thanks

  • phuck 3 dislikes

  • @wwt1212 head bangers....

  • The title to the first song is 33rd of August.... Even Mickey seemed shocked when he asked for request one night at a great little coffee house venue in Palestine Texas and I responded with 33rd Of August... Sitting just a few feet from him when he looked at me and smiled his beautiful smile and began to sing and I knew I was never going to experience like it again.. That was right at 12 years ago and I haven't so far and don't expect to.

  • Just beautiful.

  • Best music I have heard in quite some time. If you watched the Superbowl this weekend, this will restore your faith in music and humanity...

  • Best music I have heard in quite some time. If you watched the Superbowl this weekend, this will instantly restore your faith in music and humanity...

  • does any one know the correct chords to this song im trying to learn this version i just need the chords and what tuning this is in somebody please help! if you can please message me or leave a comment here

  • @kooozy3: It's standard E tuning, but he's got a capo on the first fret. The intro is: Em - C - D (this part also comes after each verse.) The verse is: Em - Am - Em - Em - B7 - Em - G - Am - C. I don't know the chords for Wish I Was, though. But I hope it'll help you.

  • @amosmcelhone Thanks for this

  • @johnny576375 Thank you too! Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of music. God bless you

  • My husband met Mickey at the Flora Bama during the "Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival" They became immediately best friends. The festival is held at the Flora Bama and other venues in November every year. It is a great festival and they always do a tribute to Mickey with Mickey's son singing and playing. You will see and hear alot of great older and up and coming song writers. To learn more go to the Flora Bama web site. lynng1947

  • the picture lolks like a young Bruce Campbell lol. legendary voice though. way better then kenny rogers

  • I learned "late" that Mickey was one of the most influential (and maybe underrated?) "outlaw country" artists ever in America. The mastermind behind many, many great songs performed by more known artists. If you read interviews with all the big ones they all point back somewhere and mention Mickey as a great source of inspiration. Chris: The boxset is magnificient! I would advise anyone who likes this track to get the boxset. It's cheap. Also considered what's waiting inside!

  • I've got trouble just to take this single recording in. It sends shivers down my spine! The whole Triad Studio Sessions is magnificent in showing what a strong live artist Mickey also was. Kenny Rogers & The First Edition made a wellknown rendition of Just Dropped In - that was somewhat immortalized many years later in The Big Lebowski where their version matched the Jeff Bridges character good. BUT listening to Mickeys own version you soon will learn that THIS IS THE WAY it should be played!

  • No one ever acknowledges this is the original! He wrote this song!!

  • wicked music

  • damn, thank you for sharing this. 5 star

  • Proof you don't need heavy distortion to be heavy.

  • @jenbpack.........Laura and I are friends on facebook and we have talked about Mickey and Aunt Maime. but thanks for your e-mail but i already told Laura everything.

  • I first heard his music in the early 70's, the huanting in his voice and songs always stayed with me. Mr. Newberry was a very gifted person, wish there were more out there like him.

  • Thank you so much, had never heard this version it's just wonderful. also Thank you for the show downloads they are of high quality and are greatly appreciated....may we never forget Mickey Newbury & Townes Van Zandt!

  • THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE CHILLS LISTENING TO THIS INCREDIBLE SOULFUL VOCAL AND PERFORMANCE! Thank you for sharing this!!

  • )))))))))))))))

  • Mickey and my mother were cousins and when mickey was young he lived with my mom and grandmother in Houston(just outside of Houston).Anyway johnny, do you have his daughters site? because I have numerous 45 rpm of Mickey. Such as Eastham prison farm. I also have notebooks of songs he wrote when he live with my grandmother. I told mickey about them at a family reunion once and he just giggled and said to throw them away. LOL

  • @hooky2222: Mickey is my uncle and I can give his children your contact info if you wish. I'm sure they would love to have anything of their father's!!

  • well, sounds great! He's gotten razor in his vocals over time!

I thought he would have distanced himself from this song, but I can see why he wouldn't ! Why is it written he was displeased with "harlequin melodies"?

I think that album sounds very good and his voice is amazing on that LP.

    Well, thanks for sharing!

  • WHAT IF.. the songs from this session had been released as an album?

All these songs with an edge instead of the commercially "clean" country pop sound of the 80's.

A hell of lot more people would know who this genius is.

  • Just beautiful - I'm ashamed to admit I have only recently learned of this fantastic musician and songwriter's work. I guess there's much great music I will never know about but I feel priveleged to have made this guy's acquaintance.

  • Awesome, even better than his albums.

  • This version of these two gems transcends genres and age. It is absolutely soul piercing.

  • WOW ! I love Mickey's music , and I hope he is now singing praises to God , in His care ,with a brand new body like His. Life is good .

  • if this was hendrex's fav vertsion, who am i to disagree - cool .. well done mickey -

' Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam '

  • @jimmydeboy WOW!! Oh, it says Kenny's version was Jimi's favorite SONG. This demo was made in 1991. Many songs weren't recorded by the author till after someone else made them hits. Steppenwolf's "(God Dam) The Pusher" is one. It's on YouTube Be very careful: it's nothing like Steppenwolf's comparatively tame version.

  • Best lyric ever.

  • inspiring!

  • These tracks are incredible. Rawest Newbury I've heard.

  • WOW.....Just, WOW!!!!!!

  • Amazing song (s)!!!

  • this shit is legit

  • Maasai, same here, never heard of this singer/songwriter and am transfixed by his renditions of Just Dropped In and Summertime, from the same recording session. Absolutely authoritative. I hope they'll release that session as an album. I had never heard Kenny Roger's version either--boy is that lame compared to this.

  • Yet the First Edition cut was a big hit. Later, Kenny was even embarrassed of the "song", though I think he meant the "cut".

We are in the process of compiling a final album of unreleased material, and this song will almost certainly have a place on it.

  • mickey wrote this song... and you can't write a song like this without livin' it ... read everything you can about him, it will blow your mind

  • They are studio demos that were done in one take, then left alone. Luckily some kid that recorded the session kept the tapes, then released them as bootlegs, or we'd never have them.

I don't know if Johnny is that kid, but if so, thank you Johnny, because this is my favorite version of Just dropped in, bar-none. His voice in this recording is just haunting.

  • I'd like to say its me but I don't know who originally seeded them.

  • @johnny576375

I was trying to find that link you mentioned but couldn't.

Anyway you could post it on here or email it to me here?

    Thanks

  • @johnny576375

Hey. I was looking for the link you mentioned to down load

but couldn't find it. Any way you could post it on reply or send it

to my inbox? Thanks for awesome trax.

  • @johnny576375 where can i get this

  • There's a link to my blog on my profile, you can download it there.

  • @MickeyNewburyMusic i am 24 and i never heard of your father till like a week ago and now he is one of my favorite musicians. His music just speaks to me in so many ways.

  • @GutShotHomie It was incredible growing up as a kid, and actually loving my dad's music. Not many people can say that. For a long time I wondered if I was just biased, or if he was actually as good as I thought he was.

After studying his music for years now, along with every other kind of music imaginable, I've realized, he's even better than I thought he was.

I know there are millions of 24-year-olds just like you, who have never even heard his name uttered, much less heard him sing.

  • @MickeyNewburyMusic Well sir there are a lot more 24-years-old's that know his name and music now. I have told all my friends about him and his soulful music.

  • @MickeyNewburyMusic

My wife is Bettye LaVette, who recorded this song in the 60s. I played this for her and she thinks it's the best version she has ever heard.

  • ARe these studio recordings compiled in an album?

  • Check out "Cunninlynguists Georgia". They sample wish i was for it. Can someone tell me which version they use? It sounds a bit different i found two versions of the song on here so far both by Newbury.

  • The sample of "Just dropped in" sounds like this one.

It's hard to tell exactly which cut of "Wish I was a Willow tree" is being used, but I think it's the version on the album "The Sailor".

  • ich habe keine angst...* möchte nur aus dem crazy place raus...im going home.wenn du die antwort weisst, dann verstehst du mich ein bisschen besser :-) Gute nacht*

  • Just dropped in...... a hospital a few days ago....wish i was :-) out from this place. I am not strong enough....

  • Never heard this before

Wish I Was is one of the greatest songs I heard in my life

Can't stop playing this vid over and over again

  • Wish I Was actually was released on an album called 'His Eye is on the Sparrow'. Great album, Worth looking for. Mickey was the greeatest.

  • Seems hard to find as a cd

Could you put Wish I Was from this album on YouTube? Would be great.

  • For me, Mickey was the 'Kerouac' of song

  • beautiful parallel.

  • interesting

  • Paal Flaata's cover of Wish I Was is also good enough

  • i only had heard of kenny rogers version of the condition song but this has definately introduced me to some quality music. cheers for posting it.

  • Usually i only listen to Hip-Hop/Reggae but wow, i love this song.

Could someone help me, where i can get the second part of the song (wish i was).

  • Wow...great post, thanks for sharing.

Awesome song, incredible rendition, amazing artist.

Has a songwriting ability among the greats like Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon and a voice and music ability that is incomparable...

  • Love Mickey Newbury - what a great songwriter he was.

  • i'd never heard of this guy before i listed to Willow Tree by Steve Von Till today...

...so glad i've bothered to check out the original!

i feel like a criminal for not knowing of this sooner.

  • i apologise....i now know he did write it....my bad!!

  • There's nothing better!

    thanx in advance

  • me too me too! ^-^

WIsh I was = best song ever!

  • what u imagine kurt cobain to sound like 2day

  • wow, this man was so good...

  • unbelievable voice, strong guitar

  • Beautiful.

  • That was hauntingly groovy!

  • The favoriet singer of Johan Derksen

  • Het kan me niet zwaarmoedig genoeg!

  • Somewhere I have a set of DAT tapes from a performance Mickey did not long before he died. I have to dig that out and make a CD. Willow Tree is one of the most deeply personal and spiritual songs ever written.

  • I found a cassette copy of the original. My memory is fuzzy on this one, but I think I got this tape in FL around 1993, or maybe it was in houston in 1991. His voice is still strong and clear. MN is joking around with the audience a lot... very relaxed and on top of his game. I'm glad I dug it up. I was told it was made off the mixing board by two friends of mine who knew him.

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • This is the best bit of music I've heard in years. No doubt. I cannot state how amazing and moved I am by these 7 and a half minutes.

  • Who'd have ever guessed that I'd prefer something other than the Kenny Rogers' version of "Just dropped in".

Wow wow wow oh hauntingly WOW.

And hearing those new (extra) lyrics. "Oh a grain of sand is all I ever wanted to be."

"Nobody wants to know you if you're down and out.."

Thanks for introducing Newbury to me. Going to get the DVD.

    Aloha and peace!

  • verry good! ... Wish I was an old Guitar ... Nice text

  • Wow.

  • that was fucking amazing!!

  • This man discovered Townes van Zandt in a bar in Houston. Enough said? No, There can never be enough said about this man's incredible talent and also the simply awesome talent of the long-legged kid he discovered in that bar in Houston. Music for me was never the same after I discovered those two gentlemen.

  • Man! This is GREAT!!! I have never heard this particular recording of the song... had a version on an old RCA album, with "Weeping Annaleah"... and "Willow Tree" came, if I can recall correctly, from his later LP release, "His Eye is On the Sparrow."

  • When I met Mickey, we talked long after his performance was over. Jack Williams was partnered up with him at that time, and might have been wanting to leave, but Mickey had a lot to say. I've got a 52 Regal arch top with Mickey's autograph on it from that one meeting. He had strong feelings about everything and it didn't bother me at all when he contradicted himself. A truly unique person , that like his music defies categorization.

  • My band is just getting ready to start working on this song. It's allways been on of my favorites, since I was 14. I now have a new perspective on this. I'm very moved. The way I was thinking on it ( the 1st ed) is expanded....very powerfull....

  • is there a way I can get this very version on my i pod......words can't express how much I like this.....thank you.....I'm very moved.

  • Try to get Nights When I am Sane (CD) and rip it... you won't steal anyone no more... the author's dead anyway. RIP.

  • This is one of the best i have ever heard....ever! Kenny wrecked this song...and after you hear it by the man who wrote it....so much better. I would pay good money to get this on a cd. Unfortunately, I frequented a place he played but found out after that he passed. Wish i was a willow tree leaning on a lazy breeze movin like a midnight train through the rain in Georgia......a willow tree is strong enough to bend...never like the oak that lives in fear of the wind. Lyrics are rediculous!

  • "a grain of sand in my babies hand, is all I ever wanted to be" damn, thats awesome writing...

  • thats saying playin in a babies hand isn't it...it's still awesome.

  • if that doesn't touch you, your dead, fall over.

  • incredible, thanks!!!

  • is there anyway i can get this song? its amazing

  • We talked on the telephone when he was alive, many times, as he did with a lot of his fans who came to his website. He never put himself above us. He loved to talk and thought himself somewhat of a physic,,,LOL He wasn't...I still miss those predictions.

  • There are several versions of Willow Tree on different recordings. Which CD is the from?

  • This one hasn't been released on CD, just a demo.

  • this is precious, thank you

  • Thank you for this. Mickey Newbury, like Townes Van Zandt can never die out. We must keep them alive.

  • This voice gives me goose skin Great i agree with elijahsnan

  • Thank you for posting this track. Mick is the greatest singer, songwriter I ever heard. I had the privilege of meeting him when he last came to England, he was a true gentleman, this world is a much poorer place without him and I miss him everyday.
