I loved hearing her talk about her childhood! Great video, and this is going to be an awesome heriloom for future generations if you have saved it to CD. :)
Your mother is precious, she reminds me of my grandmother...I miss her terribly. I think I can speak for most, we would love to hear more from her about her life growing up. The wisdom she holds could truly benifit us all.
Thanks for recording such sweet memories. I searched for other videos on youtube and elsewhere on the Depression, but none were as sweet and interesting as your mom's. Others were so political and dull, but you and your mom were warm and personal.
I like to hear stories about the Great Depression. I don't know why. I guess I just need to know how people survived hard times. My life feels like a hard time.
Goodness, what a lovely, gracious, adorable lady! And when asked , about competing with others picking cotton... I loved her answer, she was striving for her on "personal best". A precious lady with great wisdom & charm!
That was VERY interesting. My mom (born in 1925) grew up at that time too, but in NY and Chicago. She'd talk about the rationing-books and the poverty and desperation. Sounds like Mother Country was better off living on a farm. We all need to learn to become more self-reliant and cooperative.
Great Video Jim,cherish your mother,My mom use to tell me the same stories.Remember, during the depression,80% of the people, lived rural, now,it's the opposite.
Wow, I have dairy cows up on my farm currently, although, they seem abit quirky and picky on what they seem to eat, Dr Flanagen said they're reaching the stage of depression, Im not too sure what we're going to do, Farming has always been our thing, my mum and dad have lived on a farm, great uncles ect. It just wont be the same when our cows die out, have you got any cows on your farm? or is it just your mother who lives on a farm? Nice weather! Here it is very cold brrr! Get them heaters on hah

Fried Bologna one of my Dad's favorite meals. I love your grandmother. I'm adopting her, ha ha ha. All it does is make me think of my grandmother who went through these exact same things. She is just as precious as can be!
I always wanted to churn some butter. No idea why..I know it's hard. I truly feel the fresh food they ate has so much to do with their health and longevity. Something we could all use more of! Wonderful video, Jim!
My Yayya came over from Greece. She lived in NY in a one bedroom Apt an the bath was down the hall. They shared with the other families on they floor. They ate bread & coffee. She told very interesting stories, :) ha ha my mom used to talk bout getting bologne logs.
Yes we never said no...
This was such a great video. Thank you Mother Country :) You are sooo sweet
Aww..Jim...what a very special video, and what a beautiful lady Mother Country is. I am tucking this into my favourites as I miss my Mom & Dad and grandparents so much. They always had such awesome tales to tell. hugs, Chris
Oh Jim, how on earth did I miss this? She's just precious. I could literally listen to her stories for hours and never get bored. How wise of you to ask her these questions and what a blessing it is that you share her with us. Thank you!!!

I'm doing a report on the Depression at the moment, and I just want to thank you for this video, because she gives so much detailed, first hand information. This gave me more information of daily than most books or online sources.
I'm glad it helped James. If you get a chance, go online and do a search for Studs Terkel. That site might provide some good information for you as well. Thanks for watching. -Jim
Thank you so much! I miss my grandma! She was born in 1927. She had a massive stroke a few years back and now she can't talk to us and is unable to walk. This was great! Again Thanks so much!
that's when life was good. thats when life was simple. nowa days we have too much and we're selfish and our belly is our God. obesity is an epidemic in the usa. kids dont respect their parents or their elders - u say we dont realize how good we have it now? i say they dont realize how good they had it then. nowadays we suffer because of abundance, laziness, self centeredness and children have no idea what it is to truly be loved by parents who rear them in the right way. God bless yall!
She is a very wise lady with a lot to offer. Listening to this video has confirmed what I knew in my heart, that people should learn to be self-sufficient if they want to survive the coming depression. We may be running out of time and I should get started on educating myself. I thank you and her for sharing :)
My mom and dad were born in 1930 and 31. Both were born here in Southern Ca. My dad was raised on an orange orchard farm here. He remembered them working in the packing house till late at night. My mama use to tell me how balogna and getting a hot dog at the buchers was such a treat too! LOL I wish I had them on video talking about this stuff. But I do have photos I should post some day. This was a wonderful video. I think your mama is a real gem!
How did I miss this? Your Mom has a beautiful smile! It lights up her face! I too love hearing the stories of that era. I quiz my dad constantly. All I can say is, a steady diet of beans and rice must be healthy because my dad is 86 and he loves to talk about the dried beans and rice with every now and then a treat of fried fat back. Seriously.
What a lovely lady your Mom is; I enjoyed listening to her tell about the hard times.I looked at her hands and I knew she knows what hard work is. Please do more videos I think this generation is going to need a guide about how to survive this next depression. Your Mom reminded me of how I once lived on a farm in S.C.when we grew everything we ate. I am thinking about writing a book on how to survive. This country is so spoiled! God Bless
What a great video. I know how you feel. I am from Clanton, Al and living in the DC area. You have inspired me to take my new video camera and interview my mawmaw when I go back home. She is alot like your mom. I can't wait. GREAT JOB!!
your mother seems very lovely! my grandmother grew up on a farm as well with 8 brothers and sisters back in the early 1900's. they had cows, chickens, hogs, grew their own food such as corn, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Christmas things like clothes were handmade and they got a few toys and socks and shoes.
we sure have gotten spoiled. i wonder if we'll have another depression..i think we're about in one now. well..all we can do is pray. your mom seems so lovely!
I'm glad you had a great Christmas! I LOVE the south. My hubby and I wanna move down there (TN to be specific) anywho..the depression. My grandparents raised me and my dad (grandfather) grew up in the great depression too. It was pretty tough.
I've always said that we should be making more of this kind of video, where people talk about the old days. That's real history & unless we preserve it, like this, it will be lost :)
Wow Jim...that was absolutely great! Makes me realize I really need to talk to my mom more often.
Yes, we have all gotten spoiled, but at least your mom and them didn't have to worry about starving to death...I'm afraid in the next "Great Depression", if things ever got that bad again, that a large number of people will do just that. It must have been a secure feeling to have such a degree of self-sufficiency.
Dang..we're all a bunch of softies now days compared to our parents and grandparents. Back then alot of people could grow their own food. What are people going to do for the next one? My parents were kids during the depression..it must have been harder on parents back then...alot harder. She's a sweet Lady!
I really enjoy seeing your mother on YouTube--my mother was born in '35 and tells similar stories--my grandmother said they had no money but they lived off the place and were never hungry or without clothes. Grandmother was a big believer in having a garden, chickens, cows, and hogs--she was always prepared for the return of hard times.
I remember the days on my Pappy's farm of slaughtering hogs and chickens. But that was in the 80s. It's funny my Dad was a farm boy,and my Mom was kind of a hippy. How they ever fell in love beats me. Love your video Jim.
brings back memories ol buddy,,,,as a child it was my job on saturday afternoons, too kill the chicken for sunday s dinner,,oops giving my age away, grt stories jim
My grandma, I love her stories, she always talks about how she used to rush home from school to listen to her soap operas on the radio, and how, when they came on TV, it was like, this huge thing. And how she didn't get a TV until after my father was born, there's more, lol, but it won't fit in the comment box.
Tammy I would like to see a little snow but not as much as you have. LOL How do you clean the roof? I'm guessing with a big broom or shovel. Stay warm! -Jim
You climb up and push it off with a shovel. You can also use something that looks like a wide aluminum or plastic hoe on a very long handle and you pull the snow down from the edges of the house. Ice on the edges sometimes causes water to back up under the shingles.
Stormy... thanks for this inspiration. It is very insightful. I think that 'Southerns of that time' really did just bad together and make the best of it.~Ann
Thanks for sharing this with us Jim. That was great. As a personal observation, when Sunny used to hear her relatives speak of the depression, she was always struck by the difference between how her northern relatives relayed the stories as compared to her southern relatives. The northern relations would speak of ration cards and the difficulties of living day to day and all the hardships they faced. cont....
The southern relations would speak of it as though it was simply "hard times" but nothing so devestating. They would just talk about how they banded together, sharing what they had and making the best of things. The northern side never spoke of those things. You are so fortunate to be able to document this in this way with your mother.
That's a great observation Stormy. I guess the Southerners did band together and help each other out. You know I've heard all those stories before but it really is great to be able to capture and document them on video. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment! -Jim
I followed you over here after seeing your comment on Peters fox hunting video and just wanted to say-what a great video! Very informative and entertaining. I hope you make some more.
Thank you americanamor. I hope to capture a few more of those stories in the future. Peter is a treasure and I enjoy his Geriatric1927 channel very much. -Jim
Aw Jim she is soooo dang cute! Love her accent too! I love to hear stories from the older generation...we really don't know how good we have it these days. The funny thing is, they never knew growing up that they were poor. That's the best part. Bless her sweet heart.
I really enjoyed listening to Mother Country! Your Mother is wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing the stories! I hope there will be more! :-) Happy New Year to the Country Clan...:-)
Hey Caylyn. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. She got a big kick out of reading all the nice comments. Enjoy your weekend! -Jim
In her lifetime she has gone from Mule and cart to Plug in Hybrid Cars, from Radio Shows to You Tube... What an amazing life... The thing I love most is seeing a thoughtful son treasure his Mother while she is still so healthy. Really she seems like one of those blessed people who will still healthy her whole life.. A Classy and tough woman, she can teach us all a thing or two about surviving anything.
Hi Bear. I think that generation has probably seen more change during their lifetime than any generation before them and probably more than any that follow will. It must be amazing to them to have gone from no car, telephone, electricity or television to all the conveniences we have today. Thanks for watching buddy! -jim
Hey there Stacey. Glad you enjoyed it. We had fun making the video and she got a thrill from all the nice comments. Hope you have a great weekend! -Jim
Jim I love when you have you share your Mama with us. She is just so fascinating. I loved her story of what it was like living in the depression. My own grandparents ( God rest their souls) were born in the 1890's and they made it through with 11 kids. My dad wasn't born until 1938, but I hear similar stories from my own aunts and uncles. Hug your mom for me and thank her for sharing her story.
Jim, your mother is such a delight...please let her know I appreciate her sharing these lovely stories. I just love her laugh when talking about the bologna. God bless her, you and all your family. - Cynthia in Arkansas
Jim sounds like your mother and her family lived better than a lot of people did during the depression. My mother was born in 1923 and she told me about my grandmother having pelegra which is a disease cause from lack of protein the the diet.. I know it was a hard time for everyone.. Your mother is lovely.. Loved this video
what a wonderful documentary Jim. Thanks for sharing your mom and her personal story. She's a great storyteller and you make a great interviewer! I hope there will be more like this!
Funnily enough we were talking about the same subject yesterday - not sure if I got it on tape though as I haven't checked my cam. Will post it as a response if I did
I just love your mama! I'm glad that she was willing to talk and share. I loved her stories. And I agree with her--I don't know that we could get through another depression. We *are* very spoiled. Thank her for sharing with us. And thanks for the idea of doing this video!
Beth thank you so much for watching and for the nice comment. You know, I suppose her generation will have seen more change in a lifetime than anyone that came before them or anyone that will come along after they are gone. It's amazing that she's gone from no electricity, car, radio or television to having someone in Hawaii watch her video and then communicate back to her. What an amazing life to experience so much progress. Have a great weekend Beth! -Jim
History repeats and it's not hard to see we are heading down the same path today. My parents are both gone now, but live during the depression too. Your mother bless her heart, didn't have it as bad as my folks. Dad was sent to another farm to live and work, cause his did couldn't afford to feed all the kids. Mom had it a little better, but not much. Kids today would never survive. 5 stars
Hi LadyCitizen. She did say to me later that they had it better than most because of the farm. Unfortunately they did have a tragedy a few years later when the farm house burned. Both parents, the grandmother, and two of the kids died in the fire. So, that experience changed their lives forever.
Wow, that was great Jim! My dad was born 1927 and I love hearing his stories of growing up too. He was one of 6 children. Some of his stories are really funny! Your mom is just precious! Merry Christmas!!
Jim, this was the best video I've seen in a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your mom. You are a good interviewer, as well. 5***** and faved.
Marc thank you so much. I read your comment to her and she got a big thrill from it. She can't figure out why anyone would be interested in hear her stories but I told her that she's a big hit. LOL -Jim
Awesome vide, you have a lovely mother. Very insightful. I plan on during a phone call to my Great Great Great Aunt Rosa who is 97, was planning on a video during that phone call. You video just reminds me of it! Thank You. Merry Christmas!
Jim, I love to see stories like this. There are just not enough of them around on You Tube. Give Mother Country a hug and tell her how much we love her stories. Hope to see more of her very soon.
Oh thank you Sherron. She got a thrill out of all the comments and couldn't believe that anyone would be interested. She said "I can see how this could be addictive." I laughed under my breath and thought you have no idea how addicted we all are! LOL -Jim
GREAT VIDEO! But I can't believe you got her to sit still long enough to video.
This is just the tip of the stories she could tell. Times then were very hard but like she said it was 'just a way of life'. I really worry about our economic times- we don't have the means to 'really' support ourselves today like they did then. No chickens, cows, hogs, gristmills, gardens, farms or smokehouses. But mainly we don't her kind of 'self-discipline' that she used and uses to be such a productive person.
Ann it was amazing to keep her still that long. I was telling them that she has more energy than all the rest of us put together. LOL You'll have to corner her long enough to film part 2. Wow the rain is really come down over here tonight. -Jim
LOL... You know, I think I put a finger on her strength tonight. And that is the Self-discipline. It's not that she really has more energy than the rest of us... It's that she keeps going when the rest of us plop our butts in a chair and start to whine. And I'm sure it comes from all the experiences she has had in her past!
I will work on her about a 'part 2' of the video but that may be easier said than done!
My Grandmother was 97 when she died in 1991. I am so grateful that I was able to speak with her and learn of times past. I wish that it was all recorded. You'll never be sorry you recorded this clip. It was a time of struggle, but also great shaped note singing, and faith in God, and great times with family -- sometimes I don't think it would be so bad. Tell your Mom that she has many fans.
Hey there frugal. I'll be sure and tell her she's got a fan! You know, I guess that's why they sometimes call it the greatest generation. They knew how to scrap, save and get by and when things were good they appreciated it. I'm afraid that my generation is hopelessly spoiled, including me. Good to see my friend. -Jim
Terrific video Jim! Your mother is quite a lady and I love hearing her stories. I don't think people today could live through a depression like that one, they are too lazy.
Hey Barb. We would certainly have to toughen up real quick if we had another depression. LOL We're all spoiled and lazy and don't even realize how bad. We did have a nice Christmas and I hope you did as well. Great to hear from you! -Jim
your mom is really cool i would love to go to church in a wagon stuff like that is just cool to me. My grate grandma used to tell me storys like this before she passed away i loved it
Jim, I ALWAYS ENJOY SEEING AND HEARING YOUR MOTHER. She is a fascinating lady. Her story brought back memories of stories my grandparents told me while I was growing up. This video is a TREASURE. I hope you will interview her MORE....and MORE....VALUABLE INFORMATION....I hope many will view this. IT SHOULD BE FEATURED!!!! Merry CHRISTmas!!!!
Ronnie she laughed and said oh Lord when I told you said that it should be featured. LOL Hope you and the family had a wonderful Christmas. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Jim
Whoa! I picked a good day to click back on YouTube! Your mother's terrific and please tell her thank you for the stories and agreeing to be videoed. 10 children - what a crew that must have been. She must have a million great stories. And 312 lbs of cotton? That's like three times her body weight!
Hey Sue. Good to see you surfing the YouTube tonight. She has lots of great stories about those times and we had fun making the video. Hope you and your family had a nice Christmas! -Jim
oh that was great, Jim. and thanks to your mom for sharing her experiences. I used to love hearing my mom and aunts share their stories as well. Always amazes me that they took it all in stride, and had a strong work ethic.
Rute we're sitting here laughing watching it now and I told her Ruthe thinks your elderly. LOL That sounds funny to us because she has so much energy she runs circles around us. LOL Hope you had a Merry Christmas. -Jim
I love living history. Thank you a million for sharing!

I've always said that we should be making more of this kind of video, where people talk about the old days. That's real history & unless we preserve it, like this, it will be lost :)

Great video...would love to hear more from the 'older folks'
mzmarple 3 years ago

My grandma, I love her stories, she always talks about how she used to rush home from school to listen to her soap operas on the radio, and how, when they came on TV, it was like, this huge thing. And how she didn't get a TV until after my father was born, there's more, lol, but it won't fit in the comment box.

I am very jealous of your weather, had to clean the roof on the house today, almost four feet thick.
yoyomax12 3 years ago
Tammy I would like to see a little snow but not as much as you have. LOL How do you clean the roof? I'm guessing with a big broom or shovel. Stay warm! -Jim
CountryComesToTown 3 years ago
You climb up and push it off with a shovel. You can also use something that looks like a wide aluminum or plastic hoe on a very long handle and you pull the snow down from the edges of the house. Ice on the edges sometimes causes water to back up under the shingles.

Thanks for sharing this with us Jim. That was great. As a personal observation, when Sunny used to hear her relatives speak of the depression, she was always struck by the difference between how her northern relatives relayed the stories as compared to her southern relatives. The northern relations would speak of ration cards and the difficulties of living day to day and all the hardships they faced. cont....
SunnyDazStormyNitz 3 years ago
cont...
The southern relations would speak of it as though it was simply "hard times" but nothing so devestating. They would just talk about how they banded together, sharing what they had and making the best of things. The northern side never spoke of those things. You are so fortunate to be able to document this in this way with your mother.
SunnyDazStormyNitz 3 years ago
That's a great observation Stormy. I guess the Southerners did band together and help each other out. You know I've heard all those stories before but it really is great to be able to capture and document them on video. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!

5 stars
LadyCitizen 3 years ago
Hi LadyCitizen. She did say to me later that they had it better than most because of the farm. Unfortunately they did have a tragedy a few years later when the farm house burned. Both parents, the grandmother, and two of the kids died in the fire. So, that experience changed their lives forever.

But mainly we don't her kind of 'self-discipline' that she used and uses to be such a productive person.
whatsnext 3 years ago
Ann it was amazing to keep her still that long. I was telling them that she has more energy than all the rest of us put together. LOL You'll have to corner her long enough to film part 2. Wow the rain is really come down over here tonight. -Jim
CountryComesToTown 3 years ago
