  • Did he say "Bozza"? As in Eugene Bozza?

  • And now we are 52 likes!

  • 50 likes, 0 dislikes. Now it's 51 likes.

  • man, i just wish that i wud of been a lucky one to play a song with Maynard, i wouldn't care if it was just a simple song like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy... one of my favorite songs, i successfully accomplished top staff F in octave in 8th grade... now, this year, Ive smashed octave G.

  • at 4:18 the other guy is like "of course. what else should i expect from maynard"

  • whats up with maynard saying "uh" at least 3 times before he introduces each song? lol

    "now we'dlike toWUH"

  • @currlyguy

I think it's because his breathing preperation is so immense that he gets short of breath relatively easily...after all he does dominate fluently those upper ledger-lines on a regular basis ... :) RIP "The Boss"

  • God, I love those High Notes. Only Maynard!

  • How would YOU like to stand on a stage with Maynard Ferguson with a trumpet in YOUR hand?

  • @4stripes41 My treble would tremble!

  • @billygoyboyII

    Hi Billy.

    So would mine! (smiling)

  • The mouthpiece appears to be a Roy Stevens/Costello model. Roy Stevens ,an excellent teacher/player/leader took over the famous Costello trumpet method in the late 50s (his studio was on W. 48th St) He also designed this mouthpiece..

  • The energy level of Maynard is amazing ... undoubtedly it helped him maintain the level of attack needed for that upper register work ... but you gotta love the final gesture of the trumpet 'straightman' ... a fine player in his own right

  • hmmm. He did that 'bow' thing back then too. My grandfather always called Maynard one who was just way out there and untouchable.

  • @edweibe Your grandfather was right !

  • Dear lord, the look on the other guys face as Maynard rips is just hilarious!

  • I love that lick at 3:03, it is perfect

  • who is the other guy, hes not bad

  • Besides the fact that this is one of the dumbest comment threads I've ever seen(sadly, an obvious exaggeration, as this is YouTube...), I think the other guy sounds pretty darn good actually. Nice lines, phrasing etc. A bit tired sounding at a couple spots, but still a hell of a lot better than 98% of people who call themselves trumpet players could do. Kudos!

  • what's the actually name for maynards mouthpiece?

  • i love watching this video! I miss Maynard and his energy. He inspired countless young trumpet players, me included. Whle no one can play a duet with Maynard, and come out ahead, in defense of the other trumpet player, he looked and sounded like his chops were spent. I feel bad for him., He was probably hoping to keep up with his hero, but instead, ran out of gas probably 3 songs ago.

  • haha at 4:17 the other guy is just like "yeah yeah, you win"

  • I think you have it very wrong, Captain. If you just take you're eyes away from the screen and really just listen, Bota (or whatever that other trpt's name is) does a pretty darn good job for what most side men would be playing. Having Maynard play next to him brings out how mediocore he is (most of us are), and that's why there needs to be Maynards in the world--for all kinds of things. And, considering who Maynard was, he never had a mean bone in his body, so he would not put others down.

  • Maynard's making the other guy he is playing with look like a Stooge. lol

  • I think the the other guy swung pretty well but of course Maynard can swing and play high so there's not much that you can do. But I like the fact that the other guy played his style and did not try to match Maynard, high note for high note.

  • Maynard could smoke just about anybody.

  • Lead trumpet FOLDS at 3:49.

  • o man i never noticed, ha!

  • twas the drummer's fault..

  • Nah, the drummer's fill was right on, and everyone but the lead was there.

  • nope..just listen to the drummer man..his fill drags. Granted the lead player should have plowed ahead, however. The drummer dropped the ball. Check out 3:55, he drops the beat there too...

  • I stand corrected. Good ear.

  • Maynard's using an interesting mouthpiece (2:43)

  • that's an FBL classic piece, from back in his Conn days.

  • woah he is 40 and he looks like he could be 60, he is amazing, and that other guy wasn't bad he just has a different style that doesn't include a lot of high notes

  • Dude took his music stand and went home. CLASSIC!

  • Indeed!

  • HAHAHA! Maynard smoked him!

  • ha ya he did

  • Maynard is just cooler

  • Big Kudos to Brian for posting this. I spoke to several members of Maynard's last band and they said he was as nice as he was astounding on the trumpet! A true horn legend.

  • Hey is this the infamous Bucket? Kevin from the world band days. Great old Maynard stuff.

Very nice collection. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for sharing these treasures of the Boss! Kevin Sharp

  • What a cool video, thanks for posting!! The Yugoslav guy who plays the duet with Maynard was surely a decent enough player, but it was probably like asking the local Jr. High soccer coach to jump into a full speed scrimmage with the visiting Green Bay Packers. Maynard always seemed to be very gracious to oher musicians.

  • Was he EVER not great??

  • Never!!

  • I think MF kinda made that 2nd trumpet player feel inadequate/inferior, see his expression at 4:17 to 4:20 and right at the end of the song. MF stole his thunder.

  • It's like he's saying, "what the hell am I doing up here with MAYNARD?"

  • hahahaha, hes like well how the fuck am i supposed to beat that, thats so funny

  • well you're not supposed to beat it, play with it dont try to outdo it

  • whos the other trumpet player?

  • Wow, these guys in this band look like they don't want to be playing with him at ALL. What's up with that? This other trumpeter in particular sounds so sad... at the end you see him shrugging incredulously.

  • Maynard Ferguson is nothing but pure art...if you don't like him then you have a fucking problem.

  • @James9533 Nah man, its all objective. Whether or not someone likes this is all in the eye (or ear, in this situation) of the beholder. Someone might find that Maynard's music does not capture their emotions. Music is art, and not everybody will see the art the same way.

Not saying I don't love his music. This is the shit. They're swingin so hard, its amazing. It fully captures my emotions. I was just saying, not everybody likes music the same way

  • Maynard is so funny playing with these stiffs - his tie all loose, stumbling around like he's sh*tfaced, and of course blowing the poor other guy off the stage! And Maynard was going easy on him...What a laugh it was to see Maynard and the great Buddy Rich at the same shows. Buddy's band looked like they were scared of their high school principal, whereas Maynard and his band always acted like they just came from a frat party!! I'll miss them both.

  • wow... gaymaynard go fuck urself u disgust me with ur commets. how dare u. ungreatful

  • i agree whole heartedly with rogersat (well said).Maynard Ferguson is my hero and has always been a source of endless inspiration for me. People like you disgust me to the core. you are not only blatantly ignorant: you are scum.

  • aside from all the highnotes that he played during this clip, even if he just played in the normal below hi C range...i think he was great and loved his solos...he is a wonderful jazz player...i wish i had met this man and shook his hand for inspiring me and so many others....

  • I think relivewoodstock69 was just pointing out the funny expression the other trumpet player made at 4:17 and nothing more. I thought it was hilarious and so did the audience as they laughed.

  • thanks johntrumpet, because that's all i was pointing out guys!

  • exactly

  • Yeah that is a classic "I'm not worthy" look. Execellent lol.

  • maynards giardinelli.

  • 'like crap'?Who are you,relivewoodstock69? comedian or,maybe, one of billion rock guitar player? FANTASTIC music, thats the point!

  • Yeah its a little slower than i'm use to hearing too. Thanks a lot for posting!!

  • oh also at the 4:17 mark look at the other trumpet player and it seems like he's thinking "thanks maynard for making me look like crap once again" haha

  • Maybe, first of all, You should try do play anything like this along with Maynard on the stage! And one more thing, Your username says to me that You should comment some other music, maybe something from Woodstock...

  • I am wondering what crap would You look like playing with Maynard...Hahaha...

  • Maynard was one of the greatest ever.

  • hey man, all i gotta say is show a little respect. your disrespect is unnecesary- especially your screen name. people with this attitude towards maynard disgust me. one thing for sure is that NO ONE has ever been able to do what maynard has and probably no one ever will. he also dedicated the latter half of his career going to schools to educate young students on jazz. a very noble thing. so take the stick out of your &%$ and just enjoy the music. that's what jazz is about.

  • your attitude disgusts me, maynard was one of the greatest trumpeters ever...he is a pioneer and is a source of inspiration to many, to mock him like you do is just ridiculous! can you do what he did - even when he was a pensioner? he was amazing, who cares what he looked like?! youre comments are wasting youtube space, get a life!

  • It's a little slower than I'm used to hearing it but it's still great, thanks!

  • thanks for posting all these jewels
