As a parent with a deaf child, I have a vast understanding about technology for improving hearing. The technolgy is changing and the science is moving forward that can cure hearing loss. University of Michigan Hospital has a patent pending for a vitamin that can cure some hearing loss. I would never seek a Cochlear Implant and rule out future technology or a cure. Americans we need to protect our children and send a message against this type of legislation.

I receive many compliants that their CIs do not help and many are educational development delayed. @Liberty4DeafKids So you are saying that because 500 people have not had success with this technology nobody should attempt it until they are adults? I can tell you for a fact that results are far better the younger the implant is done. In the end the parents have the right to choose for their children. This is what they call parenting. If a hearing parent has a child that is a good candidate for an implant, 99 times out of 100 they will choose the implant. Why wouldnt they?

@peterb362 Yea I too wonder if we are having the same conversation. I have no problem if Deaf adults take all time to research, be aware of risks, provide self-medical consent and choose to wear CI. For Deaf children, we can allow them to enjoy the sounds through Hearing aids. What bothers me the most, they are not aware of medical consent where their little precious hair inside cochlea wld be shaved off. they'd never be able to hear again. They shld wait til adults. Its better.

@Liberty4DeafKids Why should they wait until they are adults? Why is it Better? As parents we have to make difficult decisions for our children sometimes. Children develop most of the neural pathways for normal speech by the age of 3. If we wait until they are adults that door will have mostly closed. Most parents who choose a CI for their child have done the research, weighed the risks VS the gain and decided the risk is worth opening the door to sound.

@peterb362 first, I'm sorry for calling you the moneymonger. I didn't know you had a Deaf child. I was attacked by audiologists & drs. Actually, I care abt Deaf children's educational, emotional, social & psychological needs. Last June 95% Deaf HS seniors including all CI users in CA failed their HS diploma exams. It proves me enough that many doors have closed on them. It hurts to see that.

If there are no hair cells in the cochlea to begin with in the case of (Connexin 26) patients they will never hear anyway no matter how long they wait. @peterb362, try using HA on another side of ear? Its true, they wld be unable to hear if CIs do not work on them. Why go thru all that? My belief, its best to wait til they are old enough to be 100% informed. It won't make any difference if gets CI at young or old age. Same results. I have 110 db - close to profound hearing level, I'm still happy with my powerful digital HA and have a very good job. =D

I can see that his comment is very, very interesting. Unfortunately, it's hard to see that interpreter far away in shaken video without any transcript. What year did he say that Ohio passed law to give permission to murder minorities? 1980s? Do you know any video of his speech on "Deaf Eugenics" with transcript or with better view of an interpreter? Is there any book by him on Deaf Eugenic? Please, let me know. Thanks.

This is great! The transcript from his lecture should be out in a few days, too, and that goes into greater depth in terms of the history of eugenics. I am so happy he came to the rally and that you recorded it for everyone. Harlan Lane argues that Deaf are an ethnic group, and his argument is very convincing, especially when you consider the high rate of intermarriage between Deaf. This makes them more genetically related than other ethnic groups such as African-Americans.

Continued ... and IF Deaf are an ethnic group, then efforts to eliminate deafness are tantamount to ethnic cleansing. Genetic therapy to eliminate deafness = eugenics. Edwin Black gets it right that this is all based on the idea of an "ideal" human and that the "ideal" is always a very small group that gets smaller and smaller as you kill off the "less than ideal." Cultural diversity is central to what it means to be human and we must fight to preserve it and celebrate it.

Edwin Black applies AB2072 Bill kin to Eugenics. Deafness a medical view, and therefore is Eugenics in action, fix or cure. In reality we are disadvantaged as a minority without minority rule. Imagine in politics under the United States Consitution, and the Declaration of Independence, we could be people God Created us equal, and allow us be Americans of our Culture, and Language. Local to Federal levels, as Lawmakers, Minority Rule representing Deaf for Deaf will stop tyranny of Majority!
