Before I say anything else I just want you to know that I'm not trying to be sarcastic or a know-it-all and on a side note a huge fan of the entire Wildernessoutfitters channel. That having been said I have a tip for you personally. When you set your leg-hold traps and begin adjusting the pan for sensitivity you can get a fair degree of drop in pan-height by simply applying a little forward pressure to the dog (helps to level out your pan, particularly with long spring traps). Good video btw :)
Hey Critter, got an Idea , Dave mentioned in a video about transplanting herbs to his personal space but I don't think he did any video's beside showing plants and explaining their uses .
I wouldn't let those posting negative comments deter you from future videos. Don't fall for a moment of thinking they have any interest other than to push their agenda.
Gotta say I was half expecting you to lose a finger on some of those traps.
Don't take the bait of the critics and fall into their trap.
i posted my first comment without reading the rest, jeez man, what a bunch of crybabys, did they get lost, can they not read, the title is "trap preparation 1", well anyways keep posting these trapping vids, they are very good, and accurate. shut some people up by posting a slide wire/drowning lock set for beavers. again man great video!
good vid... thanks for the share. the ethics banter is a little weak fellas, take it for what its worth. a chance to learn. more tools in the tool box gives you a better chance. much appreciation to critter gitter and dave
Heard story, do not know if its true - about some hunter. This hunter set foothold trap, wich i know as "irons" on his wife's lover to repell him... The dude discovered irons without seting them off. He wants to send "message" to the hunter by crapping into trap, so he hunkered down. He crapped on the trigger plate, and this trap caught his happysack...
i dont do alot of trapping but i went to a gathering for trapping. a good idea i heard is to file a shelf on the pan were the dog meets. when you are setting it it will give a slight click and you know your good. i hope that made sense. if not ill try and re-explain.
enoughraptor6, that's what's called a "night latch" . It's a pretty common mod. We might get into modifications at some point. But we're starting at the basics.
Dave and critter easy solution delete all the trash comments. Great video by the way im not nearly as experience as you critter but I have trapped for a few years and thought your video did a good job of covering the basics. P.S. usually the little people who dump on others videos are activist with an agenda for or against something so there only interest in the video is bringing you down, just dont bite man.
I say fuck the ethics people, I'll kill any animal in any way as long as I get to eat it. My only ethic is that I eat what I kill, I never kill for sport. Anything else, I don't care. I don't care how much pain the animal experiences, I don't care how long it takes it to die, the only thing I care about is getting it in my stomach. Humans are the top of the food chain, and I don't give a shit what all you moral-conscious liberals say.
I will show how to make a quick kill with a leghold in a future video. I have been trapping for 21 years so I have figured a few things out in that amount of time. While Tom Brown is talking about his spirituality, I will have already had supper on the fire and a hide prepped. If this is the crap I'm going to catch with every video, I'll just stop making them and enjoy my time in the woods.
Steve, Dont let these people bother you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if they are goofs. It takes all kind of people to make the world go around...Goofs included....Great series.
Hey Steve, don't even break your stride man. You're likely to catch some crap. I wouldn't advise going to church and talking about trapping, but THIS IS the proper place to do it. Teach on bro!
Oh man ! I haven't ran a trap line in awhile ! don't you hate checking your traps and only finding a leg there . we used the 220's and bigger one for beaver or cage traps shoved right in front of the hut. ah dishwashing liquid ? we got a 55 gl. drum and went and collected whole walnuts and boiled our traps to get the greese off and stain them .
I'm from Louisville , Oh. North East Ohio We used to trap in Navarre, Ohio

I think the trapping must be allowed only in survival situations or in educational courses and the metal traps must be absolutely forbidden. I know that all of the hunters here will curse me, but there must be some ethics even in the killings. For the first time i'll rate a vid from this channel with less then 5 stars.
why do you insist on speaking about things which you know nothing, trapping is a traditional skill here in america, our country was explored and settled by trappers. the trapping of wildlife is also used for wilderness conservation and preservation. people here in america still support themselves by trapping, either for fur, meat, or pest control. so take your agenda elsewhere and let other folks learn. keep up the good work steve ,5*
I gotta tell ya man you are starting to offend me. All your Tom Brown BS, show me one video of TB doing anything????Let alone these wonderful traps you speak of. I have met Tom Brown and I am unimpressed!
I belive that most of us practice these skills because we love the wilderness and everything in it . Nobody wants to cause great pain to any animal but if it means eating and staying healthy then every mean of taking game is acceptable I prefer to not use leg traps but I will and I have a few. I'm wiyh these guys if you don't like what you see then don't watch!
yea wtf dude... go put yourself in a situation where your starving to death, and then come back an tell me you chose to starve out of respect for an animal... animals dont have souls, we humans do... thats why god put them here, for us to eat... lets see you be Mr. Animal Rights Activist when your freezing cold an half starved, if your hungry enough youll eat the leather off your boots, your not gonna worry about respect for an animal. if you wana respect an animal, then dont waste the meat...
oh wow u did not just post that, dude u need to understand that these are videos about self reliance, and survival. i personally dont care how the animal feels. We are the number 1 species because of our ability to do this kinda stuff, anything that takes skill in order to kill game isnt disrespectful, trapping takes alot of skill, just like hunting with a selfbow...... so before you go spreading your armchair survivor bull shit, stop and think about what your really saying.

Foot trap...come on man, everyone knows how inhumane those are. It's an absolute disrespect to the animal being trapped. Plus who would have one of those in a survival situation?
Look man, he is not only talking SURVIVAL he is Talking SELF RELIANCE and many people would be well equipped having several traps to ensure meat sources. If you ask me shooting aminals from 2-300yards with a rifle is disrespectful but know one cares about that. The video is educational content and dont down the man for his wealth of knowledge, it may save your life. You probably need to go to the PETA page and not watch our videos if you feel this way!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
PETA?, you are misunderstanding my point. Go take Tom Brown's course, someone who has learned these skills and actually lived them. With a higher level of skill there is no need to set a trap that causes suffering.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'll second that, anyone who has spent extended periods of time in the wilderness would know the connection you bridge with the life around you. Cruel trapping does not fit that balance.
Sorry you are dissapointed this is real life brother! When the chips are down I will Kill in any fashion I deam nessasary to eat, If you would not then you would DIE!
Of course if it is unavoidable I would use any means nessasary to stay alive. The way the video is presented it almost glorifies the foot trap. I believe the video could have gone about its presentaion better. I'm in no way insulting your methods, just stating my opinion. I didn't mean to get everyone flustered. I'm still subscribed so, it wasn't that serious. LOL.
im really glad you guys are passing on the traditions of tracking and trapping. america was explored and settled by and because of trappers. and for folks just getting into it i would suggest a trap setting device, duke makes one that will do 110s all the way up to 330s for like 8 bucks. great video!
Do you ever use conibears in a cubby set? I use them for ermine(110) and fisher (220) and they are wickedly effective. I used to use them for muskrat in the houses(on the inside) until the game warden caught on (it was illegal but effective). I use long springs, and coil springs on anything that sticks up out the water during Spring trapping. I use coils for beaver on the lodge, and 330 conibears through the ice for beaver.
I also had the same problem. I was using Chrome as my browser exclusively and then I switched to firefox to see if that helped with the video playback and it is LOTS better now!
man you have one heck of a trap collection there Steve.. Great video too awesome info, covered every trap completely I have to say this is one of the first videos I've seen where I had no questions! Thanks alot
If you look above the video to the Note: it says Video still processing-The quality will be much better an hour from now! Every video does this for a while after upload.
holy cow, do you have weak springs on that 220? I cant believe he set that with his hands.
