  • One glorious woman!! Not only did she have a smooth, smokey, sultry voice, she had a stage presence that was captivating. A beautiful woman; gone too soon...under-rated.

It's funny that she crossed my mind and i've been listening to her alot today and i wikipediaed her and it jus so happens that she died on this very day 15 years ago! • This Lady is missed:)

  • Ladies & Gentlemen - I remember listening to Phyllis Hyman along with the other Black groups on the Smooth Jazz Radio Station out of Norfolk, Virginia while growing up and then in high school. I was stationed in Guam and when she died of a drug over dose. It is sad that a lot of the good singers are dead.

  • OMG! Thank you so much for posting this video! I love this black, tall, extraordinary, magnificent and beautiful woman! Her voice is soo amazing and she definitely had a dynamic fashion line. No one could match her style. I miss her so much!

  • The Gorgeous Vocals of Phyllis Hyman!!!

  • I remembr when growin up being born an 80's baby. My mother used to love her some Phyllis Hyman. She used to have her albums on records she'd played her at all times of the day..I love her voice mellow and sweet serenity to the ears (Smiles)

  • Not only could she sing so well, she was a real classy woman, I miss her.

  • She's STUNNING!!

  • Absolutely one of my favorite songs... and a song a friend and incredible singer in his own right, Marc Sadane, used to sing to Phyllis at Mikell's in NYC. Those were the days!

  • She was so BEAUTIFUL, and that voice, that voice , sends chills down my spine

  • RIP

  • Did yall checkout PH taking her shoes off (2:03) LOL. You can't sing like that when your feet hurt

  • Jazmine Sullivan bares a striking resemblance to Ms.Phyllis Hyman

  • I never noticed but yeah she does.

  • Yes she does! I saw a black and white pic that she took and i did a double-take...cause i thought it was a pic phyllis took when she was younger

  • I love Phyllis, RIP.

  • I just love her and miss her. My God she was a blessed woman. What talent! Her voice! Oh My.. so sweet, passionate and real! Miss ya. What a class act as well!

  • I still find it hard to believe that someone so beautiful and talented could not find contentment.

  • I understand Phyllis and people who think about killing themselves..life is hard when you have a mental illness. People tell you you're beautiful but you don't believe what they are saying. This disease is one of the hardest things to live with.

  • Great Phyllis Hyman biography called strength of a woman. I highly recommend the book, It talks about Phyllis' struggle with cocaine, alcohol, mood disorder and loneliness. It talks about her diifulties with those in the record business who wanted to commercialize her

  • I second that I read the book in its full entity from cover to cover all of Phyllis's fans need to support Jason A. Michael's bio book on Phyllis!

  • GREAT READING YET SAD AT THE SAME TIME

  • You can see the melancholy in her face while singing this song. Tragic...

  • Does anyone have Ms. Hyman singing this song on the David Letterman show? She set-it-off! Dave couldn't speak when she finished. God rest her soul!

  • No but I wish someone would post that video, cause now I want to see it!

  • it's not just a saying... you really CAN die from a broken heart....she longed so for love, that she rather not live than live without it....R.I.P.

  • She was bipolar. What you're saying has some truth but this great women had a chemical imbalance. She longed for mental stability more than anything else. A constant.

  • She was really a classy and sophisticated lady .. as tall as she was, she really wore those clothes did'nt she? .. quite a gorgeous lady she was .. singers today could use some of her style .. God rest your soul Miss P ...

  • what was so bad in her life that she had to kill herself?

  • I can explain that yimheretoday. I too am in the music business and it's a bitch. When you really try hard to make it in this business, people in general like to keep artist in a box. The powers that be won't let you be YOU. This business is hard. I can truly overstand how Phyllis felt. I damn near committed suicide myself.

  • wow jahlove 426 I guess that's a side of the music business that most people don't know anything about. hang in there.

  • I think they said she lost her mom, grandma and best friend close together and the fact she was Bipolar and not necessarily getting the help she needed and their are stories of her being alcholic. She had been married and divorced. They said she questioned why people wanted her.

  • so sad.., she has a very unique sound, I know they grew up in the housing projects in pittsburgh but were a very nice and attractive family.

  • You are correct. Phyllis Hyman was bipolar, and the disease gets worse if left untreated. People suffering from bipolar are vulnerable to drug and alcohol abuse in that they are trying to control their extreme highs and lows. I wish people would not stigmatize people with this disorder because they are capable of living normal lives with the appropriate treatment. Phyllis Hyman could have been saved!!

  • So true. I have a child who was diagnosed with that at 13 (his father has it too) and it just hurts because we seem to think it is cute to be cruel to people with this ailment. I wish she had've gotten help because she was a talented woman. Too bad she didn't know how loved she was when she was alive.

  • That's correct it's only in her book....

  • If she had gotten the help she needed, can you imagine how off the chart she would've been, how iconic she would've been. Man, I miss her smooth vocals.

  • She was so beautiful. The only thing I didn't like was those shoulder pads that she wore. RIP

  • Though never as good as the original...I think this is the best cover version yet! Pure class

  • She and a British group called Go West have the best versions of this song.

  • why dont we have a show that pays honor to all the fallin stars that people dont talk about like Phyllis, esther, lou,and so many others.

  • Today is the first I listen to Phyliss Hyman. I've been sleeping, but now I am wide awake!! I love this version of Bobby Caldwell's orginal. This is now one of my favorite version of this song. Love her amazing voice!!

  • Phyllis was all class and style..beautiful and talented!

  • She was so beautiful and so talented. Its just ashame that she wasn't happy with herself in her last years. I miss her.

  • You're so right. I still can't believe she's gone!

  • What a talent. Gone too soon. Rest in Peace.

  • I was a lil girl when this came out. My mom would play it all the time well her whole album. I love Phyllis. She has and amazing voice. This era had more soulful singers than now days. They actually could sing and do live shows and sound just the way they did on the ablum. Iwish we had more of that these days soulful singers

  • She's in the same class ella, nancy wilson, sarah vaughn. Truly a legend!!

  • Hey, darkgreen0311 I could not have commented better! She influenced a lot of todays great divas including Anita Baker!

  • Such a Super singer beauty to perfection she

was a model for many women,so sad we loss her.

There is no one close to her talent or beauty

the ladies of today, have nothing compared to her.Phyllis had a real voice she wasn't a studio singer she didn't need the added sounds

She stood along and open up the HEAVENS with

her voice. Can't name 1 now. When I hear her songs I get sad but I'm glad we had her she left us too soon, but she left us So Much. The Best.

  • loved her and her version of this but check out bobby cadwell version of hes song.thanks for the post.been waiting damn near 20 years to see this.peace.

  • I swore up and down that it was Phyllis who sung "I Try" but it was my girl Angela Bofill.

  • What an amazing voice! She sounded to great and was so unique she had no reason to use all of the histrionics and gimmics so many singers use. She did it so effortlessly, and made it sound easy.

  • Wow, love her outfit lol RETRO.

  • oh i miss her so much!!!! i love her

  • one of my favorite songs. there hasn't been another lilke ms. hyman

  • Wow! What power, stamina, passion, and articulation. I love this woman!

  • This video is awesome. Phyllis Hyman yet lives with her beautiful touch of music. Ruby Lindsay

  • One of my best from Phyllis.

  • i found out that her and the man that played bill cosby 's dad on the cosby show are first cousins.

  • i love this song phyllis is still alive through her beautiful voice she will live forever..

  • This is off her living all alone album great track from a real lady.

  • Beautiful ... sweet memories of the Southport Weekender concert where she sang most of her classic material acapella as the band was not familiar with it. An evening I will never, ever forget. Miss her.

  • Oh wow! Phyllis' cover of that is one of my favorite songs. This was a nice, low-key version...nice to see it live! Thanks!
