You are right that the paper backing slows things down. It will work. In some areas we used a heat gun and overall this was a better method. We got the heat gun at Home Depot, a really good one, for about $80.
A putty knife, about 4 inches wide was used to remove the scraped up residue. I might mention that we were putting down vinyl plank that sticks to itself and, therefore, did not need to remove every trace of the adhesive. In another area, we used a heat gun to soften and then remove the old flooring. My wife liked this way better because less smell. Either way worked.
