So here's what I think, Michale Alig was the one who told James St. James the details of Angles murder. James St. James was so tripped out on special K all of the time he didn't actually realize what Michale was telling him. I think the rat was just his drug induced brain processing the information that Michale had already told him.

Just my thought.
