@IslamOnDemand A sufi can follow any madhab. A sufi can be a hanbali, maliki, shafi'i or hanafi. There are plenty of sufis in indonesia which is shafi'i. And plenty of sufis in the Sub-continent which is Hanafi.

@IslamOnDemand Another problem people have with him is that he follows a madhab and there are extreme false salfis who say it is bidah and Shirk to take ruleings from scholars, you should only follow Prophet Muhammad and the Quran, which is seriously absurds.
@Quran871 I have never heard Hamza Yusuf call himself a sufi nor have I ever witnessed him (I know him personally) practice or preach anything considered by the majority of scholars to be DEVIANT.
The early Islamic Scholars invented the science of Tasawwuf based on the Quran and Sunnah which focus on cleansing the human Heart. Those who usd to follow it, they often wore wool and the arabic word for wool is "suf" and therfore those people were called sufi. Sheikh Hamza Yusuf follow tasawwuf therfore, people call him sufi and he has denied it because he is nothing like the sufi of the old time, those sufis abondened the worldly stuff completely and spend their time worshipping.
