me pregunto que se sentira ser el, haber vivido con los GRANDES y haberlos sobrevivido a todos.. recordar que en algun momento estuviste tocando con bird con coltrane... debe ser tan loco
That same year he played in Madrid. The first time I heard him "live".He left me K.O. However, many critics were treating him badly back then, accusing him of commercialism and to have betrayed the essence of jazz ,as it had happened with Miles I was outraged for it.Today everybody seems to have forgotten that.Nonetheless I like more what they were doing in the fifties and sixties
He's definitely a brilliant saxophone player! One of my favorites! Some people underestimate The Colossus, he's definitely one of the best (saxophone) players that have ever played.
I love his musical jokes. Got some good laughs out of his "pop goes the weasel" quotes. :D
All that breathing and diaphragm strength and support has kept Sonny strong and contributed to his longevity, wouldn't you think?
It's especially nice to see a guy with his chops honor the melody and not use this gorgeous melody as a platform to jump from and do lots of self-indulgent riffing and showing off. It's a nice humble gesture and very sincere and endearing.
Kids, now, don't seem to have much awareness of great instrumentalists. They're really missing something. Thanks for this!
I'm sorry, but scales are not beautiful. People can teach themselves scales, but very few can create the magnificent beauty that this melodic magician produces. That is what counts. I understand that you want to learn from such a genius though, just like i do to.
This is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", recorded by The Platters. To Daniellerose7, glad you had a great teacher at camp. I think he'd be quite embarrassed by your comment. It's no contest, friend, it's about the music. Each player brings his or hers own "colors" to the music. That's what makes it so wonderful. No need to take a poke at Newk, that's just plain silly and my money says that Mr. Alexander would agree. In fact, he may just kick YOUR ass for saying something so nonsensical.
Wow...daniellerose7, If you don't appreciate Rollins man you have a problem. You are not a true jazz player then. As jazz players we listen to other players and how they express themselves, Rollins has so many wonderful ideas that he plays. Oh...I have yet to see an Eric Alexander composition in a fake book by the way.
You probably don't know who's ass you're trying to kick. Have you heard of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane. Sonny Rollins is in that league, who the f-ck is Eric Alexander!????
Uh.... like, who the f-ck is "Coleman Hawkins"? Is he one of those old guys from the 20's? Eric Alexendner is SO cool and can do anything! I heard him play scales in ALL 12 KEYS! He rules!
I'm a bass player. I can play all the scales in all the keys. That my friend is no great accomplishment! Any respectable musician should be able to do that. How old are you, 12?
sorry i pressed on the wrong key..i wanted to give you thumbs up..and no it went the other way..so this is definitely a mistake...!!!!!
i am a fiddle player...and yeah working out all scales in all keys is a lot of work but it is worth it if you wanne go anywhere serious in music...great comment!!!
Sure, it's more than an instrument, but a large percentage of the most important jazz musicians of all time were saxophonist. I can understand disliking a harpsichord, but the saxophone? The instrument of Bird, Trane, Webster, Hawkins, Shorter and Henderson? You don't ever listen to those guys? Just seems like it would be hard to like jazz and dislike the saxophone. I'm a guitarist myself, just thought the comment was strange...

Glad I can listen to this. Have it on VHS somewhere in the garbage. Think I gonna go searching for it and post the whole recording here as it is stunning especially Campbell's playing that night was outstanding (apart from Sonny's of course).

He's one with the instrument and the music.
And he was really kind to them sticking so close to the melody throughout the whole piece. Don't know if I've ever seen him do that before....hehe
