  • me pregunto que se sentira ser el, haber vivido con los GRANDES y haberlos sobrevivido a todos.. recordar que en algun momento estuviste tocando con bird con coltrane... debe ser tan loco

  • WTF! 3 dislikes... people!! you really don't know anything about music!

  • ♫♥♫♥ I love Sonny Rollins ♫♥♫♥

  • A giant of tenor sax !

    Thank you a lot

  • The awesome thing about jazz is that everybody has their own interpretation, and there is not a wrong one, just more people value certain styles

  • wow

  • @gealoa exactly

  • El tema es SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES

  • Smoke gets in your eyes is the title

  • The best!

  • That same year he played in Madrid. The first time I heard him "live".He left me K.O. However, many critics were treating him badly back then, accusing him of commercialism and to have betrayed the essence of jazz ,as it had happened with Miles I was outraged for it.Today everybody seems to have forgotten that.Nonetheless I like more what they were doing in the fifties and sixties

  • anyone knows wat is the title of this tune?

  • @atks22 Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

    copyright 1933

  • He's one with the instrument and the music.

And he was really kind to them sticking so close to the melody throughout the whole piece. Don't know if I've ever seen him do that before....hehe

  • @MusicMan20061210 Then be sure to check out youtube.com/watch?v=FCef0y2sZTo = here he plays amazing melodic variations...

  • love him!

  • who's the trouble maker? the loser that thumbs down?

  • Man this cat plays this melody something fierce!

  • I've never seen a hat like that suit someone so well.

  • He's definitely a brilliant saxophone player! One of my favorites! Some people underestimate The Colossus, he's definitely one of the best (saxophone) players that have ever played.

I love his musical jokes. Got some good laughs out of his "pop goes the weasel" quotes. :D

  • Got to see this guy at the Cerritos PAC back in 06! A True Sax Colossus!

  • Sonny Rollins turns 80 years old today. Happy Birthday to the Saxophone Colossus.

  • che camisetta boba

  • I listened to this three times and can't get enough.

  • what's this tune called? :)

  • @Ledvolta

    'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes'

  • I love to see true masters like sonny Rollins who commands the horn.

  • The last of jazz Titans!

  • All that breathing and diaphragm strength and support has kept Sonny strong and contributed to his longevity, wouldn't you think?

It's especially nice to see a guy with his chops honor the melody and not use this gorgeous melody as a platform to jump from and do lots of self-indulgent riffing and showing off. It's a nice humble gesture and very sincere and endearing.

Kids, now, don't seem to have much awareness of great instrumentalists. They're really missing something. Thanks for this!

  • Just saw Sonny friday night in Chicago. He still sounds like this. And he's EIGHTY! He blew my mind. True living legend.

  • its wonderful to hear sonny's soul .

  • Sonny is really singing here! undescribable!

  • Great vid. Truly the best tenor ever !

  • I love the way he attacks the bridge near the end. Great stuff!

  • a living god...

  • Great alto lol

  • @evanspeter000

    alto? lulz.

  • that cadenza was just other-worldly.

  • I wish it was faster! lol!

  • ♥ Loving This Music ♥

  • Fantastic !!!!

  • sonny rollins is ok but maybe he needs to post some scale videos!

  • Look at the "Sonny Rollins (parte 1)" video on youtube where he plays G-man (he's in a red shirt). He's got chops!

  • This is a joke, right?

  • I'm sorry, but scales are not beautiful. People can teach themselves scales, but very few can create the magnificent beauty that this melodic magician produces. That is what counts. I understand that you want to learn from such a genius though, just like i do to.

  • daniellerose7

I think it just goes to show that some are unable to understand and appreciate real music, and real musicians!

  • This is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", recorded by The Platters. To Daniellerose7, glad you had a great teacher at camp. I think he'd be quite embarrassed by your comment. It's no contest, friend, it's about the music. Each player brings his or hers own "colors" to the music. That's what makes it so wonderful. No need to take a poke at Newk, that's just plain silly and my money says that Mr. Alexander would agree. In fact, he may just kick YOUR ass for saying something so nonsensical.

  • Wow...daniellerose7, If you don't appreciate Rollins man you have a problem. You are not a true jazz player then. As jazz players we listen to other players and how they express themselves, Rollins has so many wonderful ideas that he plays. Oh...I have yet to see an Eric Alexander composition in a fake book by the way.

  • rioblanco

    codie3249

Eric Alexander kicks this guys ass!

    Bullshit!

You probably don't know who's ass you're trying to kick. Have you heard of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane. Sonny Rollins is in that league, who the f-ck is Eric Alexander!????

  • Uh.... like, who the f-ck is "Coleman Hawkins"? Is he one of those old guys from the 20's? Eric Alexendner is SO cool and can do anything! I heard him play scales in ALL 12 KEYS! He rules!

  • I'm a bass player. I can play all the scales in all the keys. That my friend is no great accomplishment! Any respectable musician should be able to do that. How old are you, 12?

  • sorry i pressed on the wrong key..i wanted to give you thumbs up..and no it went the other way..so this is definitely a mistake...!!!!!

i am a fiddle player...and yeah working out all scales in all keys is a lot of work but it is worth it if you wanne go anywhere serious in music...great comment!!!

  • How old are YOU?! How old is Sonny Rollins, like a milion? Is he died?

  • Sonny Rollins is the oldest man in the world, at least 1.5 million years old. And thankfully, he ain't died yet.

  • He's also simultaneously and at the same time also the youngest man in the world too. Howds he do dat? He"s Sonny Rollins dude.

  • that was about the best comment on youtube

  • @JazzVideoGuy

he's coming to delight us in Boston

  • Sonny Rollins is at least a million and is older than me. I am only a 900 thousand years old.

  • no he is alive and well, was born in 1930, and in 2007 i first saw him in london, then in 2009 in london i met him after the concert.

  • What is the name of this piece

  • As Time Goes By (?)

  • Smoke gets in your face: the title of the song

  • sorry!!! smoke gets in your eyes

  • The Song is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Jerome Kern.

  • Happy Belated Birthday Mr. Rollins! (He just turned 79 this past Monday)..

  • Thanks JazzVideoGuy, this is great!

  • All about Sonny Rollins is important! Wonderful clip.

  • il passe en france au mois de juillet ,au festival country de mirande ,dans le gers , j;irai le voir !

  • A True genius at work..it is totally inspiring..Well done Sonny

  • You can almost hear a voice comin outta that sax! So expresive.

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS!

Oh, man. Incredible. I love Sonny Rollins.

  • why is he shy!....!

  • Sure, it's more than an instrument, but a large percentage of the most important jazz musicians of all time were saxophonist. I can understand disliking a harpsichord, but the saxophone? The instrument of Bird, Trane, Webster, Hawkins, Shorter and Henderson? You don't ever listen to those guys? Just seems like it would be hard to like jazz and dislike the saxophone. I'm a guitarist myself, just thought the comment was strange...

  • A true giant of jazz..

  • No matter what Sonny plays it's always a pleasure to listen.

He is a jazz master and the best of our time!

  • that was great!!!!!he is the best tenor saxophone player in the world!!!!!!

  • great work

  • Wow! I'm not a sax fan but Sonny's playing is awsome.

  • your name is jazzman1985 and you don't like the saxophone. Very strange. I agree, Sonny is awesome.

  • Pure passion spilling everywhere

  • This man Sonny is a great great example, of how The Creator blessed man with the gift of music, and through the mind the soul is expressed through the body! WOW Thank you Lord God for giving us Sonny Rollins!

  • Glad I can listen to this. Have it on VHS somewhere in the garbage. Think I gonna go searching for it and post the whole recording here as it is stunning especially Campbell's playing that night was outstanding (apart from Sonny's of course).

  • sonny a toujours du mal a finir ses chorus hors partition toujours les memes phrases cle a t il passe le bridge ???

  • This is wonderful! What is the name of this tune?

  • "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" From "Roberta" by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach.

  • Whoever you are if you are comparing Kenny G with Sonny Rollins, you must check yourself in Psychiatric department.

Good Luck, you get torazine 100ml/IM.

  • @stegbar Make that 200ml...

  • BEST SONNY SOLO EVER. Bar None. I wish he still played like this.....

  • Me too.

  • JODER

    so good!

  • He kind of reminds me of a robot when he moves, but his playing is still amazing...:)

  • What's no good about this?

  • What ??? This is from Prague ? i didn't know Sonny was in Prague ? This is three years before I was born as a result of which I couldn't have possibly had the chance to see and hear this on my own eyes - and that's probably the one and ONLY "no good" about this:D Thanks for posting!!!

  • it's beautiful.

  • What kind of crack are you smoking?

  • I don't know the brand, but it comes in white powder.

  • I see Kenny G in your favorite. Are you sniffing glue?

  • As usual, someone knocks another player simply because they don't like a particular style. Besides who cares? I didn't say Sonny or another player is bad, I only asked/commented on why you thought this was a bad performance or "no good" as you said.

  • Sonny is the best, but i have heard him better.

  • Kenny g is shit. period.

  • @doddsalfa There is so much emotional intensity... It is amazing, as Sonny always is. You just have to learn what to listen for.

  • B-E-A-U-TIFUL!

  • this is, what i like - here in austria it would be impossible for a jazzmusician to play like this! but its wooooooonderfuuuuuullllll!

  • great performance, but Boots did that one better!

  • Awesome song and an excellent musician. One of the greats!

  • Awesome sound. He is my favorite player.

  • ¿ How is your daily, be here now, inspiration ?

  • FABULOUS! JazzVideoGuy are you the one who posted, some time back, Sonny playing St. Thomas with George Duke, Stanley Clarke, and Art Taylor? If so please BRING IT BACK!!! or let me know where I can find it.

  • Ha ha, that was marvellous

  • Thaaaaaaaaanks!

  • Wow!! Just fab!! Loved it!!! Thank you lilbits for sharing!!

    Sandy xx

  • It was a great show

  • wonderful ! ..thanks man !

  • JazzVideoGuy, You just come up with them again and again. Thank You :-)

  • "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"... ¡Qué maravilla!

  • Thanks for this video.

Roillins has a great sound. A big tone, with the solid backbone to stand like a rock and the flexibility to talk like a preacherman.

But I've heard him playing more inspired, more inventive or fancy as he plays on this video; but that's ok - everything changes a bit from day to day ...

  • Thank you sir. I won. And it is due to your wonderful channel. Love & Respect.

  • Very cool :) Thanks for sending Sharone !!XX

  • sonny's band is doing nothing for him...guitarist especially...eek..

  • Es ist einmalig wie er dieses Stueck spielt,

ich kannte es bislang nur von den Platters!

    Grossartig!

  • great*****

  • That's some good "Smoke," man.

  • Wow.....great video. thanks for putting this up!
