The problem with america is that it only has two main parties--the Republican and the Democratic. So, as a result, American politics are like an ever-tilting scale. If one party loses its power, the other one becomes way too powerful, which throws everything off-balance. Even though one might dislike and disagree with a party, it is never good to have only one set of ideas to run a country by.
Republican party use to be about small government which was not taxing heavily on all people, less government intervention, no corporate favortism, no ideals of your on your own or only Christian's values. But I remember the Republican parties has we keep peace of the world and never go to war. Republican values believed that tax money should be spent on Americans but they have changed completely to favor rich corporations and to leave all struggling Americans to die.
i really like that dude at the end. he's a common sense/intellectual style of conservative that I havent come across very often, not the 'joe the plumber'/obamas an arab terrorist kind of simple minded thinker using lowest common denominator tactics. why cant more be like him?
If the Republican Party was smart, they'd listen to David Brooks, especially wrt Regan. Regan was President 28 years ago - the world and the problems facing America and the world are very different now than they were in 1980. All I could do was roll my eyes when Sarah Pailn made that "city on a hill" comment during the VP debate. There's a whole generation who are now in adulthood (and of voting age) who don't even remember Regan's Presidency.
I kinda have to agree I mean words like "trickle down" and "deregulate the markets and they will get better". Well it worked till now!
Also McCains taxcuts would go to 2% of the people. The rich people that rather invest somewhere else then in america! Hell if I as european understand that then there are troubles!
Term limit of 6 years on all these old guys in the House and Senate. They get in there and do ANY thing to stay. I propose 6 limit (still have to be elected each 2 yrs) sit out 6 years then allowed to run again.
Sound just like a Republican!!! Msster deciever..Conservative huh? GW Bush...Moral Huh? Mark Foley, Jitter, and others..Christian? How could one be a christian and a racist at the same time??? Which Charlatan or Republican party are you talking about??
Brooks is right: "Those days are over". All the old hater, stingy, religious crazy Republicans are done. We've seen the truth of them. In Iraq, on Wall Street and in Sarah Palin. Done.
Bobby Jindal doesn't have a fucking chance in hell.
Sarah Palin's image has been destroyed. She'll never be able to be a GOP leader.
The Republicans better wise up and stop being RACIST. They better aim for 2016 with a Hispanic Female President candidate.
A White woman might have a shot in 2016 but you can forget about 2012. Obama's finance raising skills will annihilate anyone that tries to run against him in 2012.
For one, I'm a republican and I'm pretty sure that I'm not racist AT ALL. And if a good Hispanic Female President runs in 2012 or 2016 ... then I will vote for them, but if not ... I will choose who I want to choose and I really don't like being put into a category because I'm a republican. You have to remember, there were republicans who voted for Obama. Watch your words.
I don't think that its really fair to call the Republicans racist. I mean, of course more Conservatives voted for John McCain, who just happened to be white! If McCain had been black, most Conservatives would have voted for him.
The republican party is racist. I don't think there is a clearer example of that than the HATE RALLIES McCain and Palin tried to quell while they were campaigning.
The Republican party represents the "anti-liberals" because they are the only other major dominant party int he country. They are anti gay, they are anti - everything else but Anglosaxan white supremacist Dominance.
And they wonder why Obama got 97% of the Black vote LOL.
Lets see them run a Black or Hispanic for PRESIDENT
Technically, a "party" cannot be racist, but the truth is, they are HARBORING racists.
They've been winning elections lying to their constituents for years that they'd shut mexicans and Blacks off of welfare and social services and PRIVATIZE EVERYTHING to keep the liberal socialism from giving White wealth to outsiders.
The Republican party is the most xenophobic, homophobic party their is. Christo-fascists.
They'll eventually go through an idealogy shift if they keep losing.
Just make some group look like the underdog. For the next 4 years to make them seem like that. Then they can pander to the christians by making them selfs seem like the persecuted group in the world...

I'd rather disagree with people I can at least respect that they think about things.
Best advice to Reps, don't pin your hopes on Palin, she's the anti-thinking party-o-god choice.
i couldn't have said it better myself. i'm a Republican for Obama. he got me hooked after i read his second book and found he wasn't just another set of depthless talking points.

They have nothing intelligent to run on because their base voters aren't interested. A little late for the GOP to be talking issues now.
I don't think Obama's victory had that much to do with the party either. I agree with the guy who said this was about Obama. Most people don't believe in small/big gov., they believe in better/smarter gov. Obama was a brilliant guy who looked us in the eye and told the truth like he saw it, and we believed him. Now he has an opportunity to show America what it's like to have a smart president. I personally will give him a chance to prove himself.
David Brooks, and George Will hit the nail on the head as usual. If the Dems can show some fiscal restraint over the next 4 years, and perhaps even make an *improvement* (balance at least 1 budget), then they can take the mantle of fiscal responsibility AND social liberalism and win every national election handily for the next decade at least. Luckily, I think Obama is the guy to pull it off, if anyone can. Or so I hope...
It's interesting. In the past, the Republican Party seemed to be the ones who really had their act together in terms of organization, while the Democratic Party was just sort of weak and flailing, but now that seems to have turned around. Hope it stays this way for at least awhile.
Obama ran a great campaign. The effect of his strategy and tactics were devastating. McCain ran a typical campaign but still managed 46% of the popular vote. There're still a lot of common-sense conservatives out there forming the republican base. Obama had best come through with at least some of his promises if he hopes for a second term.
the party should split. no inherent relationship between the principles of fiscal conservatism and social conservatism. they're both bound and glued shabbily by republicanism
great video, the GOP is delusional and tries to convince themselves that America hasn't changed while their constituency shrinks. plain and simple, their party blindly marches towards small government and less taxes (which it rarely delivers on) and fails to develop new policies for new problems.
The Republican Party should split into two separate parties: The No-nothing, Sarah Palin, Anti-intellectualism, Ultra- religious fundamentalist, red-neck-racists; and the [semi] intelligent, educated, pro-corporate, plutocrats. Both should be minimized to 3rd party status. I hope we complain & fight against the Democrats as much as we do against Republicans and bring forth worthy Green and Indie party candidates of a more liberal, progressive nature and the GOP goes the way of the Whigs.
The Republican party is sounding more and more like the buggy whip manufacturers lamenting and resisting the advent of the automobile. It's their choice to get with the program, or keep screaming "Buy this buggy whip!" and have their message fall on deaf ears.
if people were more educated, the majority won't choose to be republicans..a majority i think will shift center left.. and if obama does a good job on education reform, its GOP no more..
the republicans are split up into groups based on the "leaders" not all the same republicans like romney and palin and guliani and jindal. let them kill each other off, the country will be better for it.
i simply love the end when that guy says "those days are over" and that sure is true. because we're going into a new era. the capitalistic way of ruling this country CERTAINLY is over...

The US was founded by leaders who believed in reason rather than relying on religious beliefs. Ben Franklin strived for newer forms of science not blindly believing what is written. That fact that John McCain got 46% of the electorate show that to many people are not thinking.
I think that, probably, the best people that could lead the GOP/Republicans in a more sane, rational & updated manner are either Ron Paul or Mike Huckabee. Everyone else seems like a tool via their poking at failed, flawed, irrational and hate-filled political tactics of the past.
(Hey, America, doesn't it feel good to have the world waving our flags again, and not burning them? We made a hell of a choice last week! Like a breath of fresh air...)
I think Ron Paul would probably have a better chance at least in my own opinion as he seems to make sense on alot of issues. Also Huckabee's religous views are pretty questionable since it seems to have such a hold on him that he doesn't believe in evelution and we know evolution is a fact. Also i believe he thinks the world is 6 thousand years old also but don't quote me on that because i'm not entirely sure.
It's because young people finally stood up to take command of our future, As well as the complete self destruction of the Rep Party. Boomers seem to scoff at anything European or progressive... I don't get it. Things in the EU seem to be going pretty well for the masses and a lot of young people like their strategy. What makes socialism inherently bad anyway??
to all republicans in DC. i am no fan. but i also know that a party in power can easily become corrupt. therefore i would like to see a strong opposition party. so here is my advice. loose the christian right. they have been killing you.

I'm not sure you've been paying attention:

I think Ron Paul would probably have a better chance at least in my own opinion as he seems to make sense on alot of issues. Also Huckabee's religous views are pretty questionable since it seems to have such a hold on him that he doesn't believe in evelution and we know evolution is a fact. Also i believe he thinks the world is 6 thousand years old also but don't quote me on that because i'm not entirely sure.

Democracy is a lie, no matter how many parties you have that won't change

Social conservatives have really become dead weights for the Republican party.

A new party should emerge from this mess. One that makes sense.

to all republicans in DC. i am no fan. but i also know that a party in power can easily become corrupt. therefore i would like to see a strong opposition party. so here is my advice. loose the christian right. they have been killing you.
