What I like is that it is so clearly a sensitive cover of Yes' original, but Susanna and Matthew clearly bring their own styles into the mix. This shows how Progressive Rock is so much like Classical. The music and parts are clearly defined allowing the artists to shine via nuanced interpretation.
Not that it's of utmost importance, but I first heard this at a restaurant called Jason's Deli in Hampton, VA. I've been trying to find out who did the cover ever since! I'm glad I finally found it!
@Daburcor I've heard Fly From Here. Honestly, it sounds more like Buggles featuring Steve Howe than Yes. It sounds less like Yes than Drama did. Overall, I'd say that it's not even as good as Asia's Omega album. The only reason that it's better is because John Wetton's vocals have such sincerity. They always have.
i am pretty angry at the music industry to ignore good performances like this..all the crap on the radio and stuff like this isn't even mentionned.. i love yes and been a big fan and what a coincidence that my genes who likes pop too has the bangles in the mix..susanna hoffs is not only perty but also very talented..
This stunning cover made me rediscover Yes after many years of neglect. Susanna Hoffs is the most daring singer I know - to cover classic Yes and Queen and do it brilliantly may seem impossible but yet she does it! Not to mention recording a cover of You're so vain which is better than original. Impossible? Not for her.
Beautiful rendition. You can definitelt hear it's Howe's guitar playing. Susanna's voice is well suited to this song. This would actually make a good Bangles song. I can just imagine the harmonies.
I actually am annoyed by the mixing. Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs' vocals are almost twice as the music... I find vocals at this volume sound overproduced and extremely "radio friendly", and where I come from thats a pretty big insult. I think Howe's soul died a little when he heard how shitty the mix was.
Gotta have my neice hear this. Last year, I played the origional 1970 Yes recording at her house, and this then-10 year old immediately starts singing along!
Actually the words are "send an instant karma to me..." in reference to John Lennon's song "Instant Karma". If you want prophecy, check out the books of Daniel & Revelation. God bless.
WOWOWOWW...Always been a Bangles fan, always been a Mathew fan..I must
now offer an apology...my favorite singer has always been Vikki,, and maybe someone misguided Susanna (boys keep swinging)...But I am utterly floored by this.Susanna, YOU ARE SIMPLY GLORIOUS HERE. I'm in awe, better that Jon Anderson..keep up the great work love you and mathew, love the bangles...
WOW!! These two are just insanely good riffin' off each other! You can pick, you can find various faults, but I'm just so happy hearing them have so much fun and making such insanely good music.
Simply nice... Perfectly done. I was worried... They faithfully reproduced the "Classicness" of the song, as well as making it a blast to listen to.... You forget and get into this version, and then think about why you loved the original... quite fantastic
They do sound good together and I for one always like hearing covers from reasonably talented individuals. No for the really dumb part, are Susanna and Matthew together as in a couple?? Haven't listened to Mr. Sweet since the late 90's (he's gained a few pounds but still sounds and plays great) and Ms. Hoffs is only a name I have heard previously, not really sure for what, movies maybe?? Still great sounding piece, thanks for posting it.
@mykk777 huh, if you're serious, then you didn't know about SH from The Bangles ~ great-lookin' gal who sounded kinda wispy, pls. see tracks such as "in your room"
I normally hate covers of songs that I like, but I have yet to find a track on either of Sid (Matthew Sweet) n Susie's (Susanna Hoffs) releases "Under the Covers Vol. 1" or "Under the Covers Vol. 2" that I cannot listen to. In fact, there are a couple that I like slightly better than the original.
This is a very impressive cover. I really like the fact that this was done with such homage a care to the original. This isn't 'over-produced'; the original material was complex and required skill in playing AND listening. Yes and other prog acts challenged their audience to delve deeper into music than the radio pablum that proceeded them. Good job MS and SH; you've done a great job here.
@Belexes You have to also look at the talent involved. With Steve Howe playing on this track I'm sure he put a little influence into the production. After listening to the unplugged live version, with the addition af a few more musicians they could possibly pull this one off. I'd really like to hear Suze sing with Jon Anderson.
I'm one of the world's biggest Matthew Sweet fans, but I hate overproduced recordings like this one I'd rather see Matthew and Susanna playing it on acoustic guitars together live. They aren't Yes!
thought this would be terrible because it's such an iconic song and hey, who can sing like Jon. But she's great! Nice to hear a woman sing this song. I can see why Prince fell in love with her. Matthew Sweet is awesome on here too.
@grayngreen yeah, you're right, that "woody" sound is surely missing, & I also miss the piano glissades, phooey, & the organ @ the end ain't as imposingly cathedral-like ~ but hey, overall it's a good job ...
This performance is really authentic and confident, and reveals the timeless sturdiness of a great song. Sometimes Susanna even sounds like Jon ("for the queen to use"). And yes, YES did sing "give peace a chance" in their version - it's a lot more subtle in the original, and it goes on much longer. Susanna & Matthew, God bless your rock & roll hearts!!!!
I have to say that I absolutely LOVE what Matthew and Susanna have done on Under the Covers Vol.2. There's not a bad song on it, and I actually prefer Susanna's voice on some of the covers versus the originals. Their cover of the Rasberries "Go All the Way" is incredible!
The 1971 original had 'Give Peace a Chance' mixed in. Who said sampling is a modern invention?! Great to hear this wonderful Yes music surviving into the 21st century. Good cover version... but check out the original.
Her voice is AMAZING - this is without a doubt the best cover I've ever heard of this classic jam. So good in fact, I think I like it more than the original, which is saying ALOT.
Yes. They don't try to recast it in some mode it wouldn't work in. But it's definitely Susanna Hoffs- her charm, her vibe. The fact is, it's a damn good song. If it weren't, if it were just some quirky song that we love because of the original band's personality, a cover version wouldn't succeed.
But this line-up just for some reason just SOUNDS REAL GOOD. Someone in production or among the musicians is paying close attention not to bastardize the song theyre covering.
It's the musicians ... the two of them really understand the structure of these songs .... they're nailing all the subtleties that make the song come alive ....
Really great cover. And Matthew last two CDs were fantastic (Sunshine Lies and Kimi Ga Seki). And good news... looks like he has finally laid off the cream donuts a bit ;-)
I was hoping they were gonna do a vol. 2. They weren't really committed to a second volume when they did the first one. Now I just hope this one is as good as the first. Syd and Suzie rock !
Wow, and how about the mixing in Lennon! Now that was righteous

@benjbass32 ". . . and reveals the timeless sturdiness of a great son". Very nicely put.
It's true- a good song can work in different incarnations. A poor or mediocre song ought to die a quiet death.
Beside choosing a quality song, the singers/musicians better have a feel for the song. As you say, Susannah sings here with great confidence and brio.

Did anyone notice the "All we are saying is give peace a chance" in the background singing at 3:16? Is that also in the original "Yes" recording?
I thought overall, this was an excellent cover. Matthew Sweet does some really good covers of other Beatles songs, as well.
Hettepop 2 years ago
You know, as good as this is...
This shows just how good Yes was, how fine their production was, how painstakingly they recorded and mixed it.
Though this is wonderful, it only reinforces my opinion.
And don't think I dismiss the talent Matt & Susanna have. I just appreciate the original more because I can hear the difference.
I can also see why someone would prefer this version.
